DEVIL BABIES:

THE REAL CHILDREN OF SATAN

The Devil Baby of New Orleans

The spawn of Satan or the Children of the Devil can be found in all four corners of the world. Some say they are born to wreck havoc and destruction on all that inhabit the earth. Or that they are her on earth just to show us mortals that the devil and his infernal powers are actually very real.

"The Real Devil Babies Through Fact, Fiction And History "

Many people have openly claimed that there are actual Devil Babies born to mortal woman over the centuries. In recent history The legend of Hull House and the terror of Bourbon Street have filled the many haunted tales and urban legends of today.

Many tales have come to light over the centuries. Stories of woman being raped by the devil. cursed or just unfortunate to give birth to the children of the devil. Devil Babies or stories of the birth of such have been told many times often as cautionary tales to frighten young girls into waiting until marriage to have sexual intercourse. "Rosemary's Baby" is a 1968 American horror/thriller film written and directed by Roman Polanski, based on the bestselling 1967 novel of the same name by Ira Levin. The film received mostly positive reviews and earned numerous nominations and awards. The film has led to numerous references in film, television, music and other media. The film was positioned 9th in the AFI's 100 Years…100 Thrills list.

New York City, 1965: Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse (Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes) are a young married couple who rent an apartment in the gothic and splendorous Bramford building in Manhattan. At first, their friend and current landlord Edward "Hutch" Hutchins (Maurice Evans) tries to dissuade them from doing so: the building has a rather unsavory past. It has been occupied by cannibal killers, Satanists and witches, such as the Trench Sisters, Keith Kennedy, Pearl Ames--and the sinister Adrian Marcato, who created a scandal in the late 1890s by claiming to have conjured "The Living Devil."

Rosemary and Guy ignore him and move in. Guy is an actor with a fledging career. He's done plenty of TV plays and commercials, which have made him good money; but he wants great parts. Rosemary is a gentle soul, originally from Omaha, Nebraska, where she had been raised in a Catholic home and had attended convent school.

As it is, Rosemary is estranged from her family, since they don't accept her marriage to Guy, who is not only an actor, but is also of mixed Jewish/Protestant upbringing. So her life in New York is all she has: she is a young housewife dedicated entirely to making a good home for her husband, whom she adores. She has a good circle of friends, but is at core sweetly naïve and lonely.

One day in the laundry room, Rosemary makes the acquaintance of Terry Gionnoffrio (Victoria Vetri), a young former drug addict who was "rescued from the gutter" by an elderly, eccentric couple, Roman and Minnie Castevet (Sidney Blackmer and Ruth Gordon). The Castavets's apartment had formerly been the front part of theirs, but is now separated by a partition.

Her friendship with Terry is short-lived. A few days after Rosemary meets her, Terry plunges to her death from the bay window. She and Guy are walking home when they see the police surrounding Terry's corpse. The Castavets happen to be walking home, too. Presumably distraught, they strike up an acquaintance with the Woodhouses and later invite them to dinner.

Soon, Rosemary finds that Minnie and Roman are, increasingly and unsubtly, becoming surrogate parents for her and Guy. And she doesn't like it. Other things trouble her, too. Guy's career got a jump start when his main rival, Donald Baumgart, suddenly went blind. Now all he cares about is his new play.

But then suddenly, he decides he wants to become a father. Rosemary is thrilled.

Evidently having studied her ovulation cycle himself, he announces the ideal "baby night." That evening, Minnie drops by to give them some chocolate mousse--or mouse as she calls it. Rosemary complains of a chalky undertaste, but Guy gets angry over her ingratitude. She eats part of it, and then furtively hides the rest in her napkin. Woozy from the wine--and, as we learn later, the "mouse"-- she passes out and has a bizarre dream. Rosemary visits the Sistine Chapel and sails on a cruise ship. The unsettling dream becomes a nightmare when two figures tie her to a bed. Something that looks and feel inhuman brutally rapes her. "This is not a dream!" she cries. "This is really happening!" Pope Paul VI, then visiting NYC and having mass at Yankee Stadium, comes to offer her absolution.

When she wakes up, Rosemary is sore and scratched. Guy half-heartedly apologizes for having had her while she was out. Rosemary is angry, but "baby night" later proves successful. Dr. C.C. Hill (Charles Grodin)--referred to her by her girlfriend Elise Dunstan (Emmaline Henry)--confirms it.

Upon hearing the news, the Castevets persuade Rosemary to go to Dr. Abraham Sapirstein (Ralph Bellamy), a prominent obstetrician who delivers all the upper crust babies in the city. Rosemary entrusts herself to him, accepting his odd advice and his recommendation of Minnie's strange "vitamin drinks." She develops pain during her first trimester, which causes her to lose weight and look emaciated, alarming Hutch--but not the doctor, Guy, the Castevets or their Saturday night gang of quaint old timers, including Dr. Stan Shand (Phil Leeds) and the obnoxious Laura-Louise McBurney (Patsy Kelly).

As her pregnancy progresses, Rosemary feels a mounting sense of dread and angst. What is wrong with her? Why won't anyone acknowledge it? She decides to throw a party for her young friends, a qualification she insists upon. Her girlfriends--including Elise, Joan Jellico (Marianne Gordon) and Tiger Hoanigsen (Wende Wagner)--tell her she looks awful and that her pain is far from normal. She has to see a new doctor. Rosemary tells Guy, and they fight bitterly over it. But at the last minute she relents. The pain has suddenly stopped. And now she can feel the baby kicking.

Near the end of her term, Hutch--who had inexplicably fallen into a coma a few weeks before--dies. But before doing so, he had asked his companion, Grace Cardiff (Hanna Landy) to deliver a book to Rosemary. It's called "All of Them Witches," a study on witchcraft through the ages, featuring a chapter on Adrian Marcato and his son, Steven.

"The name is an anagram," is the final clue Hutch had left for her. Rosemary uses her Scrabble tiles to learn the horrible truth: Roman Castevet is Steven Marcato.

Now she suspects Roman, Minnie and all their all-too-helpful friends are Satan worshipers. She visits Dr. Sapirstein and tells him she'll have no more to do with them. It's just as well, Sapirstein informs her: Roman is dying and would like to go away to Europe on a farewell tour. Rosie feels guilty about her suspicions, and when the time comes, bids them a fond farewell.

But not all is what it seems. As her due date--June 28, 1966--nears, she learns one strange thing after the other. Could it be that Guy is involved with witches? Witches use babies for their rituals. Has he promised them the baby?

She learns that witches use the belongings of their intended victims to blind or kill them. Guy had exchanged ties with Donald Baumgart. Is that how he went blind? Hutch lost a glove the last time he had visited. Is that how he went into a coma and later died? Did her neighbors and husband use these things to cast spells upon them?

She packs a suitcase and goes to Dr. Sapirstein to tell him what she's learned. But his secretary's off-hand remark reveals something horrible--the good doctor sometimes smells like tannis root, which she has learned is more commonly called Devil's Pepper. Dr. Sapirstein is a witch, too. He must be part of the plot against her.

Next, she persuades Dr. Hill to see her. But he only pretends to take her seriously. She falls asleep in his office when Guy and Dr. Sapirstein arrive to take her back home. She manages to trick them and lock them out of the apartment. But her effort was futile. The closet conceals a passageway from the Castavets' to her apartment. The entire coven arrives to reassure her that everything will be all right.

She knows better. They have to force her down on her bed, while Sapirstein injects her with something to make her sleep. She's also in labor.

When she wakes, Guy tells her she has had a boy and that he's fine. But later the baby dies--or so says Sapirstein. Rosemary doesn't believe it. She knows they have taken the baby and are planning to sacrifice it for one of their rituals.

But the horrible truth proves to be not what the coven plans to do with the baby--but what the baby is. Rosemary's baby is the son of Satan.

Contrary to an urban legend, Anton LaVey did not play the role of Satan in the rape scene of Rosemary's Baby. In fact it was actor Clay Tanner, and no technical advisor was used.

The Devis children have long thought to have been the guardians to the acursed Gates of Hell. In the King James Version of the Bible, Isaiah 13:21 and 34:14, the English word "satyr" is used to represent the Hebrew שעירים, hairy ones. In Hebrew folklore, שעירים are a type of demon or supernatural being which inhabits waste places. There is an allusion to the practice of sacrificing to the שעירים (often translated as "devils") in Leviticus 17:7. They correspond to the "shaggy demon of the mountain-pass" (أزب الاكب) of old Arab legend.

The savant Sir William Jones often refers to the Indian mythological Vānaras as satyrs/mountaineers in his translations of Sanskrit works.

Described as being goatlike in appearence or demonic in nature the Devils children have long since haunted this world. Some are said to have cloven hooves and horns others seem to be totally human in all appearences. Others might be covered head to toe with long curly hair and the eyes of a he goat. The exception being the Jersey Devil mnore animal then human, and of course the Devil child Of Miami who is said to have two heads. The strange Devil Baby of Paris called diable enfant is thought to have a long tale and is known to rape it's vistims savagely. In Germany he is called Teufel Kleinkind, In the Philippines he is known as the Satanas Sanggol.

Death Of The New Orleans Devil Baby?

One of the most popular tales often told is that he died and is buried at the foot of the tomb of Marie Laveau.

One story tells that he was struck by lightening as he was forced by an angry mob one stormy night and he scaled the spire of the St. Louis Cathedral. and that God struck him dead with a thunderbolt that started the first great New Orleans Fire.

Another tale tells that Marie Laveau strangled him with her bare hands one night when he was teething. They say he drove her crazy biting her and her many children. Another tale tells that she left him locked away in her attic chained to the roof beams and was found dead mummified there when the Marie Laveau House building was demolished.

Devil Baby Second Line Umbrellas have been part of New Orleans culture for many years. Rarely seen out side the city the special made Voodoo Hoodoo blessed items are known as a effective weapon to keep him at bay to say the least. One old tale tells that a old Catholic Nun walking on Bayou St. John in the 1860's. It is said she beat the Devil baby to death with a umbrella. He then sunk into the cold black waters of the Bayou near where Holy Rosary Church stands today. Many say that's why no one swims in the bayou to this day because all that try drown. This because at one time the bayou was crystal clear when the devil baby died in it. The clear water turned black and murky.

Whether the stories or not many have claimed to see a demonic toddler roaming the Cemetery at different hours of the day and at night.

Marie Laveau's Tomb

Many tales of the Devil Babies death or by what many say or exaggerated. How can you kill something that is immortal? Especially Satan's Child.

A very perverse tale tells that the Devil Child or Devil Baby Of New Orleans Bourbon Street, was captured one night poisoned with Laudanum. In his stupor he was taken to St. Louis Cathedral and long nails were driven through his eyes, hands and his black heart and he was impaled on or beneath the altar before God, where he died. Seven days later at the first morning Mass of Easter Sunday 1881. His Body was taken to Slidell, Louisiana where he was buried in a deep pit. Many say his purple blood stained the beautiful marble floor to this day and spots can be seen as you get closer to the altar.

But you can't keep a good Devil Baby dead for long! Many say he feigned his death and crawled from the foot of Marie Laveau's Tomb where they buried him to reek havoc on those that tried to dispose of him.

Still others say he lives in the New Orleans old City Park area and is lord of the Grunch. The Grunch is a New Orleans version of the Chupacabra. Some say Devil Baby lives on Grunch Road and the actual real El Chupacabra Like Grunch go out and steal babies and cats and dogs for him to eat. Many believe he is the fore father to all the Grunch( Louisian Chupacabra) that live today.

Marie Laveau The Real Voodoo Queen of New Orleans.

An old Voodoo Hoodoo story says Marie Laveau Castrated the Devil Baby when he was born. Because she wanted him to produce no more of his evil kind. The two bloody testicles fell to the floor as she used a very sharp hoodoo voodoo blade. Immediately they turned into a male and female grunch, who it is said actually attacked the great Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau. The grunch are said to have almost killed her with their feirce bites and punching. The dark evil terror the old Voodoo Queen must have been unbearable as she struggled under their great strenght before she fainted. When she awoke the Grunch and the Devil Baby were gone. Laveau was near death after this and many have said this is when Marie Laveau gave up her Voodoo Hoodoo ways and went back to being a good Catholic woman.

Descriptions Of the Real Devil Baby

Many different descriptions have been offered by alleged witnesses of the Devil Baby of Bourbon Street:

"It is less then three feet high. The size of a 4 year old. Bald headed, pointed ears, arms and hands like a racoon or a Louisiana nutria, face like a goat but still human, split hooves for feet and a long rat like hairy tail". But others say he has the face of the most innocent lost child one would just stare in at it's beauty. Many have reported seeing this lost infant crawling through the streets as if abandoned by it's mother. Upon reaching down to investigate the find that the Devil's spawn is upon them to kill them.

Still others say he is "It was 2 feet high, with glowing red eyes and a snakes flickering tongue. And runs very fast jumping upon them and tearing at peoples eyes and biting at their bare naked throats. he is said to be able to jump to the roof tops in a single bound to escape capture.

While the many descriptions vary, several aspects remain fairly constant, such as the devil's red eyes, pointed ears and hooves. The creature is often said to have a baby like head and the face of an Angel. Its reputed height varies from about three feet to more than seven feet.

Many recent New Orleans Paranormal sightings report the vile creature to have glowing red eyes that can paralyze a man, and that it a has a humanlike terrifying scream that can be heard above the noise of Bourbon Street.

What strange powers does The Devil Baby Possess?

Some say he has super human strength and able to leap to the roof tops of the tallest building in New Orleans in one bound. Others say he is the father of incubus and Succubus.

Known to drink blood and eat human organs from the living and the dead Many old Voodoo Hoodoo tales say his urine and feces was used to make Zombie powder. A lock of hair from him is said to cure blindness. If the Devil Baby attacks you and only kisses you it has been said that you will become a ghost when you die and have to do his bidding.

He will stay a child for the rest of his life because the first time he was destroyed was on Holy ground and on holy ground he was born. It is also believed because of this the Devil Baby has a chance at redemption and some day might just go to heaven.

The Devil Baby is said to be able to climb like a squirrel, swim like a fish and run faster then a greyhound. he only attacks from dusk until dawn because he cannot exist in daylight much like a vampire. Many say Holy water Boils on it's own when he is near. Crosses fall off the wall, and a blessed Rosary's break in your hands.

A few old legends tell that he has the power to tell the future. That if on a Mardi gras Day you find him he takes on the guise of a normal man. If you find him then you may ask him any question and he will answer it with the whole truth. At midnight he returns to his original form.

Many a New Orleans Woman have said over the years that they were brutally raped by the Devil Baby. The Uh-holy children grew up to be Murderers, Vampires, Werewolves or evil mindless Grunch.

To find urine, excrement or vomit from the Devil Baby on or near your front doorstep in the New Orleans French Quarter or area is not a good sign. How can you tell if it's from him? Locals say when you see it you will know!

A very stern Caution is always warned: Never Hunt For The Devil Baby unless you want him to hunt for you!

Post Hurricane Katrina

In 2005 and the beginning of 2007 many thought the Devil's child was washed away from the city for ever or finally dead by the flooding from hurricane Katrina. People actually say they spotted him in Houston, Atlanta, Miami and as far away as Rome Or Paris. But as recent reports state the Devil Baby is now back home roaming the city streets of New Orleans where he belongs.

Rumors circulated from 2005 - 2006 that he was air lifted out, he drowned, or was just sucked into hell as told from locals. One New Orleanian swore that a friend had taken him out on a evacuation bus to destinations unknown.

The many stories of him feeding on the dead or attacking the national guard might be slightly exaggerated. One story was told that he was captured when Animal Rights Rescuers came to find missing pets. They said he was trapped in a cage eating dog food.

Another story that has circulated the city in the past year is that he hided in the attic of a famous New Orleans Dance Club on Bourbon Street. What ever the story really is the truth is sightings of the mysterious Devil Baby have been on the rise once more.

Many families across America or now transplanted New Orleanians. They miss The Big Easy an awful lot. But I think they miss stories of The Devil Baby Even More.

Many liken the appearence of these Devil babys to that of ancient Pan. Pan (Greek Πάν, genitive Πανός), was in Greek religion and mythology, is the companion of the nymphs, god of shepherds and flocks, of mountain wilds, hunting and rustic music. His name originates within the Greek language, from the word paein, meaning "to pasture". He has the hindquarters, legs, and horns of a goat, in the same manner as a faun or satyr. With his homeland in rustic Arcadia, he is recognized as the god of fields, groves, and wooded glens; because of this, Pan is connected to fertility and the season of spring. The ancient Greeks also considered Pan to be the god of theatrical criticism.

In Roman mythology, fauns are place-spirits (genii) of untamed woodland. Romans connected their fauns with the Greek satyrs, wild and orgiastic drunken followers of Bacchus (Greek Dionysus). However, fauns and satyrs were originally quite different creatures. Both have horns and both resemble goats below the waist, humans above; but originally satyrs had human feet, fauns goatlike hooves. The Romans also had a god named Faunus and goddess Fauna, who, like the fauns, were goat-people.

The Barberini Faun (Glyptothek, Munich, Germany) is a Hellenistic marble, c. 200 BC that was found in the Mausoleum of the Emperor Hadrian (the Castel Sant'Angelo) and installed at Palazzo Barberini by Cardinal Maffeo Barberini (later Pope Urban VIII), the patron of Bernini, who heavily restored and refinished it, so that its present 'Hellenistic baroque' aspect may be enhanced.

n Greek mythology, satyrs (Ancient Greek: Σάτυροι, Satyroi) are a troop of male companions of Pan and Dionysus — "satyresses" were a late invention of poets — that roamed the woods and mountains. In mythology they are often associated with sex drive and vase-painters often portrayed them with perpetual erections.

In Roman mythology, Pan's counterpart was Faunus, a nature spirit who was the father of Bona Dea (Fauna). In the 18th and 19th centuries, Pan became a significant figure in the romanticist movement of western Europe, and also in the 20th century Neopagan movement.

Pan is famous for his sexual powers, and is often depicted with an erect phallus. Diogenes of Sinope, speaking in jest, related a myth of Pan learning masturbation from his father, Hermes, and teaching the habit to shepherds.

He was believed by the Greeks to have plied his charms primarily on maidens and shepherds. Though he failed with Syrinx and Pitys, Pan didn't fail with the Maenads—he had every one of them, in one orgiastic riot or another. To effect this, Pan was sometimes multiplied into a whole tribe of Panes.

Pan's greatest conquest was that of the moon goddess Selene. He accomplished this by wrapping himself in a sheepskin to hide his hairy black goat form, and drew her down from the sky into the forest where he seduced her.

Pan's image lived on in medieval depictions of Satan. The Devil was often shown to have the horns and lower body of a goat, as well as lust being his prime power.

A common superstition in the Middle Ages was that goats whispered lewd sentences in the ears of the saints. The origin of this belief was probably the behavior of the buck in rut, the very epitome of lust. The Black Mass, a probably-mythological "Satanic mass," was said to involve a black goat, the form in which Satan supposedly manifested himself for worship.

Pan has had a lingering connection with Satanism and Pagan religions, even into modern times. The pentagram, a symbol used in Satanism, is said to be shaped like a goat's head. The "Baphomet of Mendes" refers to a Satanic goat-like figure from 19th century occultism.

Some schools of Paranomal Thought is that the Devil Baby is just a changeling. Changelings would be identified by voracious appetite, malicious temper, difficulty in movement, and other unpleasant traits. Medieval chronicles recorded instances of this, which is one of the oldest known pieces of folklore about fairies. Changelings usually can be identified by a greenish tint to their skin. Changelings also hate shoes so they walk about barefoot as often as possible. They are very wise and possess vocabularies betraying vast intellect. Their hair is hopelessly tangled, no matter how many times you brush it, and grows very fast. It is said that if you cut a changeling's hair, it will have grown back the next morning. Their eyes and hair are usually earthen colors such as green and brown. In Scotland it was generally believed that Changlings had a great love of playing upon Pipes, and would do anything to get a hold of that or similar instruments, needing no teaching at all to be able to play upon them.

According to some legends, it is possible to detect changelings as they are much wiser than human children. When changelings are discovered in time, their parents must return them. In one tale of the Brothers Grimm, there's an account of how a woman, who suspected that her child had been exchanged, started to brew beer in the hull of an acorn. The changeling uttered: "now I am as old as an oak in the woods but I have never seen beer being brewed in an acorn", then disappeared.[1]In Irish folk, tea brewed with foxglove will send the changeling back. This is also a common method used in the English isles. There the mother will brew beer in eggshells. The Changling will call out the same as in the Grimm Tale above, and then the mother will know her child is a changling.

Changelings are picky eaters unless offered something they like. They have pointed ears. They also grow slower than other humans. Compared to other children, Changelings tend to be extremely eccentric in personality and in clothing choices. As young adults, their strange traits will become harder and harder to conceal.

Children suspected to be Changelings could be expected to have very difficult lives from all around them, subjected to numerous and endless tests, and never loved as never thought to be a true child.

Some people believed that trolls would take unbaptized children. Once the child is baptized and therefore part of the Church, the trolls can't take them. One belief is that trolls thought that being raised by humans was something very classy, and that they therefore wanted to give their own children a human upbringing.

Beauty in human children and young women, particularly blond hair, attracted the fairies.

In Scottish folklore, the children might be replacements for fairy children in the tithe to Hell; this is best known from the ballad of Tam Lin.

Some folklorists believe that fairies were memories of inhabitants of various regions in Europe who had been driven into hiding by invaders. They held that changelings had actually occurred; the hiding people would exchange their own sickly children for the healthy children of the invaders.

In other folklore, the changelings are put in place of the child to feed off of the mother of the child. The kidnapped child then becomes the food source of the changlings mother. This is done for survival of their kind. Once the mother of the kidnapped child, and the changelings mother have drained the life from the mother and child, the changling and its mother begin to search for a new suitable food source. Other sources say that human milk is necessary for fairy children to survive. In these cases either the newborn human child would be switched with a fairy babe to be suckled by the human mother, or the human mother would be brought back to the fairy world to breast feed the fairy babies. It is also thought that human midwives were necessary to bring fairy babes into the world.

Some changelings might forget they are not human and proceed to live a human life. Changelings which do not forget, however, may later return to their fairy family, possibly leaving the human family without warning. As for the human child that was taken, he or she may often stay with the fairy family forever.

The Men-an-Tol stones in kernow / Cornwall are supposed to have a fairy or pixy guardian who can make miraculous cures. In one case a Changeling baby was put through the stone in order for the mother to get the real child back. Evil pixies had changed her child and the ancient stones were able to reverse their evil spell.[10]

In Ireland, looking at a baby with envy -- "over looking the baby" -- was dangerous, as it endangered the baby, who was then in the fairies' power. So too was admiring or envying a woman or man dangerous, unless the person added a blessing; the able-bodied and beautiful were in particular danger. Women were especially in danger in liminal states: being a new bride, or a new mother.

Putting a changeling in a fire would cause it to jump up the chimney and return the human child, but at least one tale recounts a mother with a changeling finding that a fairy woman came to her home with the human child, saying the other fairies had done the exchange, and she wanted her own baby. The tale of surprising a changeling into speech -- by brewing eggshells -- is also told in Ireland, as in Wales.

TNew Orleans Devil Baby- The Devils only Son

Belief in changelings endured in parts of Ireland until recent times; in 1895, Bridget Cleary was killed by her husband who believed her to be a changeling.

The ritual impurity of the parturient mother and her child exposed them, according to traditional Maltese belief, to unusual danger especially during the first few days after birth. A changeling child (called mibdul, 'changed') was taken to St Julian's Bay, where a statue of the saint stands, and given a sand-bath. A cordial was also administered, in attempts to return the child.

Since most beings from Scandinavian folklore are said to be afraid of iron, Scandinavian parents often placed an iron item such as a pair of scissors or a knife on top of an unbaptized infant's cradle. It was believed that if a human child was taken in spite of such measures, the parents could force the return of the child by treating the changeling cruelly, using methods such as whipping or even inserting it in a heated oven. In at least one case, a woman was taken to court for having killed her child in an oven.

In one Swedish changeling tale, the human mother is advised to brutalize the changeling so that the trolls will return her son, but she refuses, unable to mistreat an innocent child despite knowing its nature. When her husband demands she abandon the changeling, she refuses, and he leaves her - whereupon he meets their son in the forest, wandering free. The son explains that since his mother had never been cruel to the changeling, so the troll mother had never been cruel to him, and when she sacrificed what was dearest to her, her husband, they had realized they had no power over her and released him.

In another Swedish fairy tale[19] (which is depicted by the image), a princess is kidnapped by trolls and replaced with their own offspring against the wishes of the troll mother. The changelings grow up with their new parents, but both find it hard to adapt: the human girl is disgusted by her future bridegroom, a troll prince, whereas the troll girl is bored by her life and by her dull human future groom. Upset with the conditions of their lives, they both go astray in the forest, passing each other without noticing it. The princess comes to the castle whereupon the queen immediately recognizes her, and the troll girl finds a troll woman who is cursing loudly as she works. The troll girl bursts out that the troll woman is much more fun than any other person she has ever seen, and her mother happily sees that her true daughter has returned. Both the human girl and the troll girl marry happily the very same day.

Child ballad 40, The Queen of Elfan's Nourice, depicts the abduction of a new mother, drawing on the folklore of the changelings. Although it is fragmentary, it contains the mother's grief and the Queen of Elfland's promise to return her to her own child if she will nurse the queen's child until it can walk.

In Asturias (North Spain) there is a legend about the Xana, a sort of nymph who used to live near rivers, fountains and lakes, sometimes helping travelers on their journeys. The Xanas were conceived as little female fairies with supernatural beauty. They could deliver babies, "xaninos," that were sometimes swapped with human babies in order to be baptized. The legend says that in order to distinguish a "xanino" from a human baby, some pots and egg shells should be put close to the fireplace; a "xanino" would say: "I was born one hundred years ago, and since then I have not seen so many egg shells near the fire!".

In Wales the changeling child (plentyn newid) initially resembles the human it substitutes, but gradually grows uglier in appearance and behaviour: ill-featured, malformed, ill-tempered, given to screaming and biting. It may be of less than usual intelligence, but again is identified by its more than childlike wisdom and cunning.

The common means employed to identify a changeling is to cook a family meal in an eggshell. The child will exclaim, "I have seen the acorn before the oak, but I never saw the likes of this," and vanish, only to be replaced by the original human child. Alternatively, or following this identification, it is supposedly necessary to mistreat the child by placing it in a hot oven, by holding it in a shovel over a hot fire, or by bathing it in a solution of foxglove.

Real children were sometimes taken to be changelings by the superstitious, and therefore abused or murdered.

Two 19th century cases reflected the belief in changelings. In 1826, Anne Roche bathed Michael Leahy, a four-year-old boy unable to speak or stand, three times in the Flesk; he drowned the third time. She swore that she was merely attempting to drive the fairy out of him, and the jury acquitted her of murder. In the 1890s in Ireland, Bridget Cleary was killed by several people, including her husband and cousins, after a short bout of illness (probably pneumonia). Local storyteller Jack Dunne accused Bridget of being a fairy changeling. It is debatable whether her husband, Michael, actually believed her to be a fairy - many believe he concocted a 'fairy defence' after he murdered his wife in a fit of rage. The killers were convicted of manslaughter rather than murder, as even after the death they claimed that they were convinced they had killed a changeling, not Bridget Cleary.

The ogbanje (pronounced similar to "oh-BWAN-jeh") is a term meaning "child who comes and goes" among the Igbo people of eastern Nigeria. When a woman would have numerous children either stillborn or die early in infancy, the traditional belief was that it was a malicious spirit that was being reincarnated over and over again to torment the afflicted mother. One of the most commonly-proscribed methods for ridding one's self of an ogbanje was to find its iyi-uwa, a buried object that ties the evil spirit to the mortal world, and destroy it.

Many scholars now believe that ogbanje stories were attempting to explain children with sickle-cell disease, which is endemic to West Africa and afflicts around one-quarter of the population. Even today, and especially in areas of Africa lacking medical resources, infant death is common for children born with severe sickle-cell disease.

The similarity between the European changeling and the Igbo ogbanje is striking enough that Igbos themselves often translate the word into English as "changeling."

Aswangs, a kind of ghoul from the Philippines, are also sometimes said to leave behind duplicates of their victims made of plant matter. Like the stocks of European fairy folklore, the Aswang's wood duplicates soon appear to sicken and die.

The reality behind many changeling legends was often the birth of deformed or developmentally disabled children. Among the diseases with symptoms that match the description of changelings in various legends are spina bifida, cystic fibrosis, PKU, progeria, Down syndrome, homocystinuria, Williams syndrome, Hurler syndrome, Hunter syndrome, and cerebral palsy. The greater proneness of boys to birth defect correlates to the belief that boy babies were more likely to be taken.[24]

As noted, it has been hypothesized that the changeling legend may have developed, or at least been used, to explain the peculiarities of children who did not develop normally, probably including all sorts of developmental delays and abnormalities. In particular, it has been suggested that children with autism would be likely to be labeled as changelings or elf-children due to their strange, sometimes inexplicable behavior. This has found a place in autistic culture. Some high-functioning autistic adults have come to identify with changelings (or other replacements, such as aliens) for this reason and their own feeling of being in a world where they don’t belong and of practically not being the same species as the "normal" people around them. In the book The Stolen Child, Keith Donohue talks about the life of a changeling from the point of view of two boys, one of whom was evidently autistic.

A Changeling is a creature found in Western European folklore and folk religion. It is typically described as being the offspring of a fairy, troll, elf or other legendary creature that has been secretly left in the place of a human child. The apparent changeling could also be a stock, an enchanted piece of wood that would soon appear to grow sick and die.

A human child might be taken due to many factors: to act as a servant, the love of a human child, or Malice. Most often it was thought that fairies exchanged the children. Some Norwegian tales tell that the change was made to prevent inbreeding, to give trolls and humans new blood, humans were given children with enormous strength as a reward. In some rare cases, the very elderly of the Fairy people would be exchanged in the place of a human babe, and then the old fairy could live in comfort, being coddled by its human parents. Simple charms, such as an inverted coat or open iron scissors left where the child sleeps, were thought to ward them off. The best way to get rid of a changeling is to threaten it with iron.

The Devil Baby of Hull House

A SCULPTED HEAD OF THE DEVIL BABY BY ARTIST RICARDO PUSTANIO

The Devil Baby of Hull House: A SCULPTED HEAD OF THE DEVIL BABY BY ARTIST RICARDO PUSTANIO

The most famous American Devil Baby has to be the Chicago’s Devil Baby of Hull House. At least, this is certainly the most widespread legend.

Hull House represented the life’s work of Nobel Prize winning philanthropist Jane Addams. It was a place envisioned as a stepping-stone for underprivileged and impoverished members of Chicago’s poor immigrant society. Because of Addams’ particular interest in suffrage and women’s and children’s rights, it was natural that immigrant women and mothers would be attracted to the beacon of Hull House.

Despite Addams’ fervent denials (she dedicated more than 40 pages to the legend and its impact on her life in her autobiography) the story persisted that Hull House was the home of a creature not of this earth. READ MORE HERE NOW!

The Pangu legend

In the beginning there was nothing in the universe except a formless chaos. However this chaos coalesced into a cosmic egg for about 18,000 years. Within it, the perfectly opposed principles of Yin and Yang became balanced and Pangu emerged (or woke up) from the egg. Pangu is usually depicted as a primitive, hairy giant with horns on his head and clad in furs. Pangu set about the task of creating the world: he separated Yin from Yang with a swing of his giant axe, creating the Earth (murky Yin) and the Sky (clear Yang). To keep them separated, Pangu stood between them and pushed up the Sky. This task took 18,000 years; with each day the sky grew ten feet higher, the Earth ten feet wider, and Pangu ten feet taller. In some versions of the story, Pangu is aided in this task by the four most prominent beasts, namely the Turtle, the Qilin, the Phoenix, and the Dragon. After the 18,000 years had elapsed, Pangu was laid to rest. His breath became the wind; his voice the thunder; left eye the sun and right eye the moon; his body became the mountains and extremes of the world; his blood formed rivers; his muscles the fertile lands; his facial hair the stars and milky way; his fur the bushes and forests; his bones the valuable minerals; his bone marrows sacred diamonds; his sweat fell as rain; and the fleas on his fur carried by the wind became the fish and animals throughout the land. Nüwa the Goddess then used the mud of the water bed to form the shape of humans. These humans were very smart since they were individually crafted. Nüwa then became bored of individually making every human so she started putting a rope in the water bed and lettings the drops of mud that fell from it become new humans. These small drops became new humans, not as smart as the first. The first writer to record the myth of Pangu was Xu Zheng (徐整) during the Three Kingdoms (三國) period.

Pangu is also honored as the creator of the world in Buyei legend, but in addition, he is also honored as the ancestor of Buyei people. According to the Buyei legend, Pangu became an expert in rice farming after creating the world, and subsequently married the daughter of Dragon King, and that was the beginning of Buyei people. The daughter of Dragon King and Pangu had a son named Xinheng (新横) but later, the son disrespected his mother, and the angry mother returned to heaven and never came down, despite the repeated pleas of her husband and son. Pangu was forced to remarry and eventually died on the sixth day of the sixth month of the lunar calendar and Xinheng's nightmare had begun. The stepmother treated Xinheng badly and almost killed him, and the angry Xinheng threatened to destroy the rice harvest of his stepmother. Realizing her mistake, the stepmother made peace with Xinheng and since then, on every sixth day of the sixth month of the lunar calendar, they paid their respect to Pangu. The day became an important traditional Buyei holiday for ancestral worship. This legend of creation is one of the main characteristics that distinguishes Buyei from Zhuang.

THE DEVIL BABY OF BOURBON STREET

-- A real-life encounter with the Devil Baby of Bourbon Street <MORE>

The Leshy or Lesovik is a male woodland spirit in Slavic mythology who protects wild animals and forests. There are also leshachikha/leszachka (wives of the leshak) and leshonky (childrens of the leszy). He is roughly analogous to the Woodwose of Western Europe and the Basajaun of the Basque Country.

A leshy usually appears as a tall man, but he is able to change his size from that of a blade of grass to a very tall tree. He has hair and a beard made from living grass and vines, and is sometimes depicted with a tail, hooves and horns. He has pale white skin that contrasts with his bright green eyes. He is sometimes considered akin to the devil. A leshy has a close bond with the Gray Wolf, and is often seen in the company of bears as well. He is the Forest Lord and carries a club to express that he is the master of the wood.

He is said to have the ability to shapeshift into any form, animal or plant. When he is in human form, he looks like a common peasant, except that his eyes glow and his shoes are on backwards. In some tales he appears to visitors as a large talking mushroom. He can also vary in size; shrinking himself to the height of a blade of grass when moving through open fields, or grow to the size of the tallest trees when in the forest

If a person could befriend a leszy, the latter would teach them the secrets of magic. Farmers and shepherds would make pacts with the leshy to protect their crops and sheep. The leshy had many tricks, including leading peasants astray, making them sick, or tickling them to death. They were also known to hide the axes of woodchoppers.

Leshy is a terribly mischievous being, he had horrible cries, but could imitate voices of people familiar to wanderers & lure them back to his caves, where he would tickle them almost to death, he removes signs from their posts. Lechies isn't always evil, though he enjoys misguiding humans & kidnapping young women he is also known to keep grazing cattle from wondering too far into his forests and getting lost. Sometimes cow herders will make pacts with Leshy by handing him their cross from around their neck and sharing communion with him after Christian church gatherings, these pacts are said to give the cowsmen special powers.

Lechies is a demon or spirit in the Dictionnaire Infernal. There he is a Slavic forest being, similar in nature to the Polevik sprites. He protects the birds, trees & animals of the forest, he appears in the shape of a human with blue skin, 2 great horns and green hair, a long green beard across his face carrying a club or whip indicating his mastery of the forest.

Should one ever encounter Lechies one must thwart him immediately by turning all your clothes inside out and backwards, placing your shoes on the opposite feet, the sign of the cross often works, but in the worst case should the Lechies torment you set the forest ablaze behind you and don't look back, he will be so concerned with putting out the fire he will forget why his mischief fell upon your poor soul.

The Jersey Devil

THWE JERSEY DEVIL

The Jersey Devil is a legendary creature or cryptid said to inhabit the Pine Barrens in southern New Jersey. The creature is often described as a flying biped with hooves, but there are many variations. There are many possible origins of the Jersey Devil legend. The aptly named Pine Barrens were shunned by most early settlers as a desolate, threatening place. Being relatively isolated, the barrens were a natural refuge for those wanting to remain hidden, including religious dissenters, loyalists, fugitives and military deserters in colonial times. Such individuals formed solitary groups and were pejoratively called "pineys", some of whom became notorious bandits known as "pine robbers". Pineys were further demonized after two early twentieth century eugenics studies depicted them as congenital idiots and criminals. It is easy to imagine early tales of terrible monsters arising from a combination of sightings of genuine animals such as bears, the activities of pineys, and fear of the barrens. >More<

Real Devil Babies in the 21st Century

Others postualate that it is to create a living body for himself so thst the can walk the earth. Others believe that the Devils child is none other then the Great Beast Of revelations and he is marked with 666. Of all the forlorn, countless souls awash in time, none reach out to us more than those of the dead at Gettysburg. They were young men, mostly, with hopes for a bright future and moved by sincere patriotic dreams, caught up and cruelly thrown down again, in the great, hot whirl of mortal combat.
