TRACING THE TRUTHS ABOUT EL CHUPACABRA AND IT'S NASTY BLOOD SUCKING COUSINS
by Dale Faber
Many strange weird stories and images have appeared worldwide concerning the elusive blood sucker the el chupacabra in recent months. And so many different different thoughts and beliefs of what the creature really is wether it is real or even exisit have been theorized. . In late 2010-2011 they have certainly been confused with the recent rash encounters of Texas hairless coyotes. Also please see: Real Chupacabra in the news
The most common description of chupacabra's is that it is reptile or scaled like being, in some cases appearing to have leathery or scaly greenish-gray skin and sharp spines or quills running down its back. This creature often stands approximately 3 to 5 feet high, and stands and hops in a similar fashion to a kangaroo. In at least one sighting, the creature was reported to hop 20 feet . This variety is said to have a dog or panther-like flat nose and face, a forked tongue, and large fangs. There have also been several descriptions of the creature having wings or being able to fly or glide through the air. It is said to hiss and screech a horrible sound when alarmed, as well as leave behind a sulfuric stench. When it screeches, some reports assert that the chupacabra's large eyes glow an unusual red which gives the witnesses nausea or dizziness.
Another description of chupacabra's, although not as common, describes a strange breed of wild dog or coyote hybrid. This form is mostly hairless and has a pronounced spinal ridge, unusually pronounced very eye sockets, fangs, and claws. It is claimed that this breed might be an example of a dog-like reptile. Unlike conventional predators, the chupacabra's is said to drain all of the animal's blood (and sometimes organs) usually through three holes in the shape of an upside-down triangle or through one or two holes.
In the month of July 2010, there were reports of chupacabra's being shot dead by animal control officers in Hood County, Texas. A second creature was also reportedly spotted and killed several miles away.
However, an officer of Hood County animal control said Texas A&M University scientists conducted tests and identified the corpse as a "coyote-dog hybrid" with signs of mange and internal parasites. The second reported chupacabra, shot July 9 about 8 miles south of Cresson, was eaten by vultures before it could be taken for testing.
New information from researcher Benjamin Radford in 2010 revealed that Madelyne Tolentino, the original eyewitness, had described a creature she had recently seen in the science-fiction horror film Species as the chupacabra. The alien in the film, named Sil, is nearly identical to Tolentino’s chupacabra eyewitness account: “It was a creature that looked like the chupacabra, with spines on its back and all….The resemblance to the chupacabra was really impressive,” Tolentino reported. Radford revealed that Tolentino “believed that the creatures and events she saw in Species were actually happening in reality in Puerto Rico at the time,” and therefore concludes that “The popular image of the chupacabra—the one appearing on thousands of books, magazines, and Web sites as a credible eyewitness description—is in fact based on a science fiction film.” This, Radford believes, seriously undermines the credibility of the chupacabra as a real animal.
In late October 2010, University of Michigan biologist Barry O'Connor concluded that all of the chupacabra's were simply coyotes infected with the parasite Sarcoptes scabiei, the symptoms of which would explain most of the features of the chupacabra's: they would be left with little fur, thickened skin, and rank odour. O'Connor theorized the attacks on goats occurred "because these animals are greatly weakened, they're going to have a hard time hunting. So they may be forced into attacking livestock because it's easier than running down a rabbit or a deer."
Those that have come forward and said they have seen real chupacabra's have always described them as being something other then doglike. One interesting theroy recently suggested by Lisa Lee Harp Waugh in a interview she stated that the creature from her observations and research liken it more to a huge mutated child sized hairless vampire bat like creature. Vampire bats are bats whose food source is blood, a dietary trait called hematophagy. There are three bat species that feed solely on blood: the Common Vampire Bat (Desmodus rotundus), the Hairy-legged Vampire Bat (Diphylla ecaudata), and the White-winged Vampire Bat (Diaemus youngi). All three species are native to the Americas, ranging from Mexico to Brazil, Chile, and Argentina. Waugh believes that a mutation or freak overgrown bat might be at the root of the chupacabra legend. Though she states this is only her personal conjecture.
El Vampiro de Moca
Vampire bats hunt only when it is fully dark similar to the chupacabra. The common vampire bat feeds mostly on the blood of mammals (including humans), whereas both the hairy-legged vampire bat and white-winged vampire bat feed on the blood of birds. Once the common vampire bat locates a host, such as a sleeping mammal, it lands and approaches it on the ground.
Vampire bats are very agile and a recent study found that common vampire bats can, in addition to walk, run at speeds of up to 7.9 km per hour (4.9 miles per hour). They locate a suitable place to bite using their infrared sensors. They then create a small incision with their teeth and lap up blood from the wound. "The most common species, the common vampire (Desmodus) is not fastidious and will attack any warm-blooded animal. The white-winged vampire (Diaemus) appears to have a special preference for birds and goats.
If there is fur on the skin of the host, the common vampire bat uses its canine and cheek teeth like a barber's blades to shave away the hairs. The bat's razor-sharp upper incisor teeth then make a 7mm long and 8mm deep cut. The upper incisors lack enamel, which keeps them permanently razor sharp. The bat’s saliva, which is injected into the victim, has a key function in feeding from the wound. The saliva contains several compounds that prolong bleeding, such as anticoagulants that inhibit blood clotting, and compounds that prevent the constriction of blood vessels near the wound.
The phenomenon of Chupacabra, or a goat vampire, appeared in Puerto-Rico mountains in the middle of 1995. Some unknown monster was killing cattle in the town of Canovanas and its outskirts by drinking all of their blood. When farmers found dead animals it turned out they had no blood at all. It seemed as if their blood had been sucked out through one or two tiny wounds. A local veterinary examined several dead animals and said those were wounds of a straw diameter and from three to four inches long. The deaths of domestic animals were really mysterious and spread terrible panic over the place in September of 1995.
A woman saw a Chupacabra attacking a domestic animal and described the beast as a creature resembling kangaroo with fangs and wicked red eyes. Another eyewitness from Canovanas, Misael Negron, said the creature was "about four feet high. It had dinosaur skin, bright red eyes of a chicken egg size, long fangs and thorns on the back of the head and all along the back." The beast attacked the man's goat. Similar incidents occurred to many other citizens of the town. In November, information about the goat vampire spread outside Puerto-Rico. Luis Guadalupe described the beast as "ugly as a demon and flying in the air." The man also added that the creature had a pointed tongue of a snake. What was the creature in fact? Some people said domestic animals were attacked by wolves, vampires or even a devil. Others believe it was an extraterrestrial being.
In some cases not only animals but even people fell victims to the terrible monster. Angel Pulido from Jalisco confessed he had been bitten by creature "resembling a giant bat looking like a witch." In Mexico, Teodora Reyes demonstrated marks supposedly left by Chupacabra's claws.
Puerto Rican Policeman Chases Chupacabra
The Why? Files
In October 1995, Luis Guadaloupe walked into his local police station in the town of Canovanas on the island of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean. He had an unusual story to report to the police - whilst going about his normal business for the day, he had a strange experience. Luis had encountered a bizarre creature -
"It was really ugly, like a demon, around four to five feet tall with huge elongated red eyes. It moved like a kangaroo - jumping on its powerful back legs..." For the full article, Visit here.
Among the monsters said to roam the world s jungles and desolate deserts, none is more feared than the chupacabra the blood-sucking beast blamed for the mysterious deaths of thousands of animals since the 1990s. To some it is a joke; to many it is a very real threat and even a harbinger of the apocalypse.
Originating in Latin America yet known worldwide, the chupacabra is a contradictory and bizarre blend of vampire and shapeshifter, changing its appearance and characteristics depending on when and where it is seen. Rooted in conspiracy theory and anti- American sentiment, the beast is said to be the result of Frankenstein-like secret U.S. government experiments in the Puerto Rican jungles.
Combining five years of careful investigation (including information from eyewitness accounts, field research, and forensic analysis) with a close study of the creature s cultural and folkloric significance, Radford s book is the first to fully explore and try to solve the decades-old mystery of the chupacabra.
Radford is thorough in his investigation; interviewing eyewitnesses, providing creepy photographs of otherworldly creatures, serving up DNA analysis, and contemplating theories of mass psychosis....this objective probe will appeal to readers interested in exploring and exploding modern mysteries. --Library Journal
The most comprehensive dissection of the chupacabra phenomenon that I have ever read. Ben Radford leaves no stone unturned in his tenacious, unrelenting pursuit of precisely what is--and, more to the point, what is not--behind this veritable celebrity of modern-day cryptozoology. Is the chupacabra a bona fide mystery beast, or is it just a media-hyped monster of the imagination? Read this compelling book, which combines healthy skepticism with objective investigation throughout, and judge for yourself! --Dr. Karl Shuker, zoologist and author of The Beasts that Hide from Man and Extraordinary Animals Worldwide
A wonderful adventure into the quirky legend of our newest popular monster. Radford manages a very rare feat of balancing the excitement and magic of the monster hunt, with the rational skeptical approach of the scientist. I really enjoyed it. --Dr. Stephen Asma, author of On Monsters and Professor of Philosophy and Distinguished Scholar at Columbia College
About the Author
Benjamin Radford is managing editor of The Skeptical Inquirer science magazine, and author of four books on invetigaion, science, and critical thinking. He lives in Corrales, New Mexico.
That could all end, now that Benjamin Radford, author of several books on monsters and paranormal phenomena, managing editor of the journal The Skeptical Inquirer and LiveScience columnist, has released what he says to be definitive proof that El Chupacabra is not real; it's not even a hoax, he said, but rather a leftover memory of a science-fiction film.
The Alien Theory
One speculation of the Chupacabra's origin is that it is either an offshoot or an abandoned pet of other intelligent beings that came to Earth a long time ago. As we know many strange creatures and cryptids are said to roam our world. and scientific discoveries of unknown animals and species are always popping up in the news today.
Luminous oval and pyramidal shaped UFOs have been seen in the vicinity where animals have been mutilated and found to be without blood. These have been reported in the towns of Cabo Rojo, Canovanas, Ponce and Naranjito. In Barrio Hato, the Rojas family observed a UFO. A horse and several goats were found mutilated shortly after the observation.
Disinformation and debunking campaigns appeared organized through UFO groups stating "Chupacabra's" belong to a voracious reptilian race of creatures, alien in origin, who have started "devouring the populace.
TheScientific Experiment Theory
The Chupacabra's is also believed to be the result of secret government experiments in nutant or hybrid genetics. This creature as I tend to refer to it here is the Godzilla of the new age. Some suggest that the lethal 'orange agent' and other dioxine-based chemical agents as well as gamma radiation tests have been tested in several places by the US Government on the island's population and territory for decades. Knowing that thanks to genetic manipulations, incredible new breeds of animals and plants, it is quite possible that the "Chupacabras" could have been developed by humans. Or as many today now so ponder mutated due to radiation.
The Vampire Theory
The Chupacabra was once believed to be or called El Vampire de Moco, another legendary mauler of animals of Puerto Rico which some have reported as crocodiles illegally released onto the island. Others suggest that it is blood drinking cult that went to far in their covert activities.
The other Dimension/Time Theory
The Chupacabras, or aliens that we are seeing would be humans of the future.... our own children.... traveling through time in order to prevent the chemical crisis that caused them to evolve into "chupacabras. Our future-humans arrive at critical times in order to either warn us or attempt to prevent the progress of the technology that will go awry and cause physical mutations.
The Mangy Coyote or Dog Hybrid Theory
Many believe that the strange ever growing discovery of hairless coyotes, raccoons and foxes are actual chupacabras. though many who study such things today state that this beast first shot and killed in in Texas is not a true chupacabra by any means.
Chupacabra encounters from around the world
In the Philippines, another legendary creature called the Sigbin shares many of the same attributes, traits and exacting descriptions as the Chupacabra.
The Sigbin or Sigben is a creature in Philippine mythology said to come out at night to suck the blood of victims from their shadows. It is said to walk backwards with its head lowered between its hind legs, and to have the ability to become invisible to other creatures, especially humans. It resembles a hornless goat, but has very large ears which it can clap like a pair of hands and a long, flexible tail that can be used as a whip. The Sigbin is said to emit a nauseating odor.
It is believed to issue forth from its lair during Holy Week, looking for children that it will kill for their hearts, which it fashions into amulets. According to legend, there are families known as Sigbinan ("those who own Sigbin") whose members possess the power to command these creatures, and are said to keep the Sigbin in jars made of clay. The Aswang are said to keep them as pets, along with another mythical creature, a bird known as the Wak Wak. A Sigbin is said to bring wealth and luck to its owners. For this reason, some people believe that many successful businessmen come from Sigbinan families. (also see "On The Trail Of The Dreaded Sigbin, The True Real Chupacabra of the Philippines")
In the Eastern Visayas the Sigbin are also known as the Amamayong.
The recent discovery of the cat-fox in Southeast Asia suggests that it could also have been simply sightings of this once unknown animal.
The Peuchen of Chile also share similarities in their supposed habits, but instead of being dog-like they are described as winged snakes. This legend may have originated from the vampire bat, an animal endemic to the region.
Recent news of the creatures that have been found in Texas seem to bring forth the absurd idea that these creatures or mangy mutts or crossed bred coyotes and dogs with skin problems. Tales of the creatures blood lust began with sightings of an allegedly unknown animal in Puerto Rico (where these sightings were first reported), then in Mexico, and the southern United States, especially in the latter's Latin American communities. Many believe the creature has migrated north because of climate change.
The first image of the creature was a comical and crazy artificial looking hoaxed image that set the whole world ablaze with what many called goat sucker madness. The image first appeared on Coast to coast Am with Art Bell.
Physical descriptions of the creature vary. Eyewitness sightings have been claimed as early as 1995 in Puerto Rico, and have since been reported as far north as Maine, and as far south as Chile. It is supposedly a heavy creature, the size of a small bear, with a row of spines reaching from the neck to the base of the tail. Some often refer to the creature as a hungry ghost ghost animal. The Hungry ghost is a Western translation of an Eastern phrase representing beings who are driven by intense emotional needs in an animalistic way. Many believe that humans and animals can become possessed by these entities and become chupacabra like in their actions. The Book of Enoch (an apocryphal book of the Bible) describes the fall of the Grigori and the demons who might be the Grigori themselves, or the offspring of the union of the Grigori and mankind. These creatures are said to wander the world in the form of evil spirit, endlessly yearning for food though they have no mouths to eat, endlessly thirsty though they cannot drink. Endlessly seeking these things from the living, the evil spirits seek to possess weak-willed men and women and animals to dispossess their spirits and to take over their bodies so as to partake of food and drink. Manly in the form of flesh and blood.
The first reported chupacabra attacks occurred in March 1995 in Puerto Rico. In this unprecedented attack, eight well tended sheep were discovered dead, each with distinctive marked three puncture wounds in the chest area and completely drained of blood. A few months later, in August, an eyewitness, Madelyne Tolentino, reported seeing the creature in the Puerto Rican town of Canóvanas, when as many as 150 farm animals and pets were reportedly killed savagely and devoid of blood.
In 1975, similar killings in the small town of Moca, were attributed to El Vampiro de Moca (The Vampire of Moca). Initially it was suspected that the killings were committed by a Satanic cult; later more killings were reported around the island, and many farms reported loss of animal life. Each of the animals had their bodies bled dry through a series of small circular incisions. Puerto Rican comedian and entrepreneur Silverio Pérez is credited with coining the term chupacabras soon after the first incidents were reported in the press.
Shortly after the first reported incidents, hundreds of other grotesque strange animal deaths were reported in other far off locals, such as the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Brazil, United States, and Mexico.
In July 2010, an animal that was freakish and very grotesque in appearance was killed and reported to be a chupacabra, but found to be a coyote with a severe parasite infection. In October of that year, University of Michigan scientists theorized that parasite-riddled coyotes (specifically the parasites responsible for scabies and mange) were likely the basis for the Texas chupacabra legend. Many Chupacabra enthusiast have always thought that the Texas chupacabra image were preposterous or outlandish and just a peculiar coyote and not the image of the true blood sucking beast that was first reported in Puerto Rico.

In the wake of the discovery, Web searches on "chupacabra sightings" and "chupacabra texas" both roared to life, as did Web lookups for "chupacabra translation" and "chupacabra definition." According to Virtue Science, the name literally translates to "goat sucker." Legend states that the beast would attack goats and suck their blood. Think of them as a less sexy version of "Twilight"'s infamous vampire Edward Cullen.
We just learned where we DON'T want to spend our summer vacation—Hood County, Texas. That's because not one, but two "strange, coyote-like creatures" have been killed within 10 miles of each other. And locals there are saying that the ugly animals could be ... chupacabras.
"It was ugly, real ugly, I'm not going to tell no lie on that one," Hood County Animal Control Officer Frank Hackett told NBC's Grant Stinchfield about the animal he found and killed in an old barn.
A few days later, rancher Jack Farr also killed one of the bizarre creatures.
"I have heard of a chupacabra before, but I thought it was some sort of mythological thing," he said. "I've seen deer and coyotes. This had deer ears, big teeth and pinkish skin like nothing I've ever seen before."
Hood County Animal Control sent one of the animals to Texas A&M for DNA testing, but until the results are in, doctors there have only said it's some kind of coyote hybrid.
"They'd take one look and say, 'Yep, you got a chupacabra there,'" Collins said. Actually, said Sgt. Rosemary Moninger of Hood County animal control, ...

Real Monsters, Gruesome Critters, and Beasts from the Darkside by Brad Steiger
BY KEVIN TROSCLAIR, Contributing Writer
Brad Steiger is a force to be reckoned with in the field of paranormal studies. Author of nearly 200 books on the subject, he can certainly be described as an “expert” in a field where genuine experts are seriously lacking. His knowledge and expertise is amply demonstrated in his newest release, REAL MONSTERS, GRUESOME CRITTERS, AND BEASTS FROM THE DARKSIDE.
One of his best books yet, REAL MONSTERS is full of the kind of stories that we have come to expect from him – the kind you have to leave the light on just to get half-way through! Every imaginable creature of the monstrous world is covered in great detail, with supporting case studies and contributions from individuals whose real-life encounters rival almost anything imaginable. Steiger offers a keen analysis of many such contributions; some others he – significantly – let speak for themselves.
Giant birds, hidden places where dinosaurs still walk the earth, reptilian and amphibious creatures, and many more join the ranks of the more familiar vampires and werewolves, ominous black dogs and huge cats, and sea monsters such as the beast of Loch Ness. But Steiger goes further, taking the reader into the minds of individuals who claim to have experienced alien abductions close hand (interestingly, Steiger groups some alien beings in the “monster” category…) and of killers who claim that monstrous discarnate entities have caused them to commit awful. He explores the frightening world of “shadow beings” and the equally-troubling possibility that huge communities of advanced beings – angelic and demonic – thrive within the confines of our “hollow” earth.
Steiger’s books are always anticipated by fans and skeptics alike because he never passes judgment on the cases and material he provides, always leaving the reader to take away his own thoughts and impressions. Readers familiar with the supernatural and paranormal will enjoy the book as entertaining and thought-provoking; those borderline individuals for whom the world of the paranormal is a curiosity will find Steiger’s style informative and open-ended. In fact, it has been said of Brad Steiger that you can pick up any of his books, be it his very first, one in the middle, or this latest release, and you will not be disappointed, but will come away much more enlightened about the realm of the unseen than ever before.
In addition to harrowing real-life accounts, Steiger also frequently references the writings of other authors such as H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Jules Verne, and H.G. Wells as illustration that some entities or beings once dismissed as fictitious may very well be more real than at first assumed. Not only real but also OUT THERE, lurking, waiting just on the edge of darkness and our imagination …
REAL MONSTERS is full of the stuff that nightmares are made of and should be read in the dark, with a flashlight or a candle, and plenty of (human) friends for company! Perfect for Halloween scares, or any dark and stormy night, REAL MONSTERS, GRUESOME CRITTERS, AND BEASTS FROM THE DARKSIDE is a must-have for any fan of the supernatural and anyone who has an interest in the paranormal.
Pick it up in time for Halloween and have a frighteningly good time!
Spotlighting news articles, historical accounts, and first-person interviews, this chronicle of human interactions with monsters will convince even the most hardened skeptic of the existence of the bogeyman, bigfoot, werewolves, and swamp creatures. Offering an array of wild reports—from the police officer who begrudgingly responded to a call about a long-haired woman flying over a suburban neighborhood only to find himself calling for backup when she attacked his patrol car to the motorist whose headlights illuminated a seven-foot tall, wolf-like creature that stood on its hind legs—this historical record highlights scary and unbelievable narratives. From slightly demented humans to spine-tingling paranormal encounters, each outlandish occurrence is detailed with thorough research and recounted with a storyteller's crafted voice.
