In the Karoo town called Steytlerville the presence of a shape shifting ‘Monster’ has caused serious panic. It has been reported it changed from a man with no head wearing a suit then into a pig and then into a bat. The creature had been sighted on a number of occasions near a church and only appeared at night.

Shape shifting is a common theme in several layers of southern African mythology and folklore as well as in science fiction and fantasy. In many African cultures, evil magicians, wizards or witches or believed to be able to transform themselves into animal shapes at will. Werehyenas, wermonkeys and werbeast in general are present in the stories of several African and Eurasian cultures.
Steytlerville, located in Karoo towns in South Africa, was established in 1875. Many strange myths have circulated in the area since then and still today a new one has been known to surface now and then. Steytlerville is a predominantly farming community with simple people living ordinary community lives. Though since it's founding no tales of the Steytlerville having a creature or monster were ever documented or reported.
Recently though a strange news story out of Johannesburg hit the wires - A ‘monster’ plaguing the sleepy Karoo town of Steytlerville struck again over the Easter weekend, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.
Another two sightings of the "shape-shifting creature" were reported on Sunday evening, said Warrant Officer Zandisile Nelani....
Sightings of this new strange shape shifting monster began in March then the last week of April 2011 when it was seen by mourners attending two separate funerals. Unseen Dark Demonic Forces are believed to be at work here.
Nelani said in a public statement that the community requested a meeting with local police because they were frightened of it. Police agreed to work with residents, but asked them to try to take a photograph of it as evidence.
Nelani said that a photograph had since been taken of the monster leisurely resting under a tree.
He said that when the photo was taken the monster had been in human form but when the photo was developed an unknown animal was visible in the picture.
“It is a very strange thing happening in Steytlerville, but no one has been hurt by it,” Nelani said. The creature as described has taken several forms and actually shifted its appearance before witnesses. In one instance a witness met a stranger and questioned him of his reasons to be in town. The stranger did not respond, Nozipho went closer and saw that the man had no head. The man then turned into a dog that was “very angry” and “as big as a cow”, Nelani said.
He said that as Nozipho and his friend ran away, the monster allegedly turned on another group of people in the same road. “They said it turned into a big monkey, and then it was gone,” Nelani said.
Last week police were told by residents that the monster changed shape while one looked at it. One man had reported that it changed from a man wearing a suit into a pig and then into a bat.
Nelani said that the community had dubbed the monster “Bawokozi”, meaning ‘brother-in-law’.

Many blogs and message boards have people stating that the Steytlerville creature is not real or just a elaborate hoax. While other comments by visitors seem to take the chance monster meeting as straight fact.
No one at this point it so seems is quite sure of what the monsters true shape or form is. Many speculate the creature or monster might be someone who lives in the village under a evil spell or curse. When it was i human form the monster had no head so speculation that the creature is of paranormal origins make it more frightening in this aspect.
Paranormal Investigations Port Elizabeth P.I.P.E. is planning to lodge an investigation into the sightings next weekend and, if the shape shifter does in fact exist, we are hoping to find concrete evidence of the fact. Therianthropy refers to the metamorphosis of humans into other animals, it is when a being has the ability to alter its physical appearance. The transformation may be purposeful or not, depending on whether it has been the subject of a curse or spell. In some folklore, once the shapeshifter has become transformed, it becomes progressively more difficult for it to return to its original form.
In the Zulu belief system there is the understanding that the magician's familiar is really a transformed human being; when he finds a dead body on which he can work his spells without fear of discovery, the wizard breathes a sort of life into it, which enables it to move and speak, it being thought that some dead wizard has taken possession of it. He then burns a hole in the head and through the aperture extracts the tongue. Further spells have the effect of changing the revivified body into the form of some animal, hyena, owl , wild cat or a large dog, the latter being most in favour. This creature then becomes the wizard's servant and obeys him in all things; its chief use is, however, to inflict sickness and death upon persons who are disliked by its master.
Steytlerville Baviaanskloof In 1876 Steytlerville was established on the farm Doorschpoort. It was named after Reverend Steytler whose efforts resulted in the establishment of a new Dutch Reformed Congregation in the area.
A certain Mr. Roselt, a surveyor, was contracted to subdivide the farm and to survey as a start 200 erven. In September 1880 these erven were auctioned and it fetched prices ranging from £80 to £30 an erf. The exceptionally wide Main Street of Steytlerville was designed at the time to allow ox wagons to turn around.
Nowadays it is divided by flower boxes planted with bougainvilleas in the center. Steytlerville is in the center of the wool and mohair district in the southeastern corner of the Great Karoo and is known for its astonishing variety of semi-desert vegetation that includes succulents, umbrella shaped wild plum trees and ancient cycads.
St Paul’s Anglican Church is the oldest church building in Steytlerville and is only used on the third Sunday of every month. Trusses of dry shrubs on the ceiling are tumbleweed, used to deter bats.

The village with it's colourful main street flanked by Karoo Victorian cottages, boasts a cavernous Edwardian Church, said to have the largest floorspace largest among its contemporaries south of the Sahara. The church was built in the early 1900's at a cost of £16 000. Steytlerville is also the home of the Kori Bustard, the world's heaviest flying bird. The rich history of Steytlerville has been preserved in the Steytlerville Museum, which was opened on 22/09/1967.
Through the efforts of Reina Raymer, the Woman's Agricultural Society (VLV) the museum took off with contributions from various members of the community. Arrangements to visit the museum can be made at the local Tourism Office.
