Today many who claim that they are actual Vampires are born as Vampires. There is no real choice in the matter as many will often point out to you when asked. The blood lust is said to overwhelm them to the extent and desire, the need to feed on the living. The lust for blood and the feeling it gives one when they feed upon the living.
The Oxford English Dictionary dates the first appearance of the word vampire in English from 1734, in a travelogue titled Travels of Three English Gentlemen published in the Harleian Miscellany in 1745. Vampires had already been discussed in German literature. After Austria gained control of northern Serbia and Oltenia in 1718, officials noted the local practice of exhuming bodies and "killing vampires". These reports, prepared between 1725 and 1732, received widespread publicity.
The English term was derived (possibly via French vampyre) from the German Vampir, in turn thought to be derived in the early 18th century from the Serbian вампир/vampir. The Serbian form has parallels in virtually all Slavic languages: Bulgarian вампир (vampir), Czech and Slovak upír, Polish wąpierz, and (perhaps East Slavic-influenced) upiór, Russian упырь (upyr'), Belarusian упыр (upyr), Ukrainian упирь (upir'), from Old Russian упирь (upir'). (Note that many of these languages have also borrowed forms such as "vampir/wampir" subsequently from the West; these are distinct from the original local words for the creature.) The exact etymology is unclear. Among the proposed proto-Slavic forms are *ǫpyrь and *ǫpirь. Like its possible cognate that means "bat" (Czech netopýr, Slovak netopier, Polish nietoperz, Russian нетопырь / netopyr' —a species of bat), the Slavic word might contain a Proto-Indo-European root for "to fly". An older theory is that the Slavic languages have borrowed the word from a Turkic term for "witch" (e.g., Tatar ubyr).
The first recorded use of the Old Russian form Упирь (Upir') is commonly believed to be in a document dated 6555 (1047 AD). It is a colophon in a manuscript of the Book of Psalms written by a priest who transcribed the book from Glagolitic into Cyrillic for the Novgorodian Prince Vladimir Yaroslavovich. The priest writes that his name is "Upir' Likhyi " (Упирь Лихый), which means something like "Wicked Vampire" or "Foul Vampire". This apparently strange name has been cited as an example both of surviving paganism and of the use of nicknames as personal names.
Another early use of the Old Russian word is in the anti-pagan treatise "Word of Saint Grigoriy," dated variously to the 11th–13th centuries, where pagan worship of upyri is reported.
Vampires are supposedly mythological or folkloric beings who subsist by feeding on the life essence (generally in the form of blood) of living creatures. Although typically described as undead, a vampire could and most likely be a living person. Driven to a lust for the craving to drink human blood to survive.
In folkloric tales, undead vampires often visited loved ones and caused mischief or deaths in the neighborhoods they inhabited when they were alive. They wore shrouds and were often described as bloated and of ruddy or dark countenance, markedly different from today's gaunt, pale vampire which dates from the early Nineteenth Century. Although vampiric entities have been recorded in most cultures, the term vampire was not popularized until the early 18th century, after an influx of vampire superstition into Western Europe from areas where vampire legends were frequent, such as the Balkans and Eastern Europe, although local variants were also known by different names, such as vampir (вампир) in Serbia, vrykolakas in Greece and strigoi in Romania. This increased level of vampire superstition in Europe led to mass hysteria and in some cases resulted in corpses actually being staked and people being accused of vampirism.
According to some sources, living vampires could be sorcerers or witches (such as some types of strigoi), or the result of a demonic contract (such as the Penanggalen and Loogaroo). Or as in the tale of televisions shows like the cult classic Dark Shadows. Baranbas Collins is cursed to forever walk the world at night by his bride and Witch Angelique.
Other tales place the very first Vampire as being Judas. Or most likely the Bible's first killer and damned soul Cain, (damned to not die by God or anyone, or things hand destined to roam the earth until Judgment Day).
In modern times, however, the vampire is generally held to be a fictitious entity, although belief in similar vampiric creatures such as the chupacabra still persists in some cultures. Early folkloric belief in vampires has been ascribed to the ignorance of the body's process of decomposition after death and how people in pre-industrial societies tried to rationalize this, creating the figure of the vampire to explain the mysteries of death. Porphyria was also linked with legends of vampirism in the 20th century and received much media exposure, but this link has since been largely discredited.
The charismatic and sophisticated vampire of modern fiction was born in 1819 with the publication of The Vampyre by John Polidori; the story was highly successful and arguably the most influential vampire work of the early 19th century. However, it is Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula that is remembered as the quintessential vampire novel and provided the basis of the modern vampire legend. The success of this book spawned a distinctive vampire genre, still popular in the 21st century, with books, films, and television shows. The vampire has since become a dominant figure in the horror genre.
It is difficult to make a single, definitive description of the folkloric vampire, though there are several elements common to many European legends. Vampires were usually reported as bloated in appearance, and ruddy, purplish, or dark in color; these characteristics were often attributed to the recent drinking of blood. Indeed, blood was often seen seeping from the mouth and nose when one was seen in its shroud or coffin and its left eye was often open. It would be clad in the linen shroud it was buried in, and its teeth, hair, and nails may have grown somewhat, though in general fangs were not a feature.
Other attributes varied greatly from culture to culture; some vampires, such as those found in Transylvanian tales, were gaunt, pale, and had long fingernails, while those from Bulgaria only had one nostril, and Bavarian vampires slept with thumbs crossed and one eye open. Moravian vampires only attacked while naked, and those of Albanian folklore wore high-heeled shoes. As stories of vampires spread throughout the globe to the Americas and elsewhere, so did the varied and sometimes bizarre descriptions of them: Mexican vampires had a bare skull instead of a head, Brazilian vampires had furry feet and vampires from the Rocky Mountains only sucked blood with their noses and from the victim's ears. Common attributes were sometimes described, such as red hair. Some were reported to be able to transform into bats, rats, dogs, wolves, spiders and even moths. From these various legends, works of literature such as Bram Stoker's Dracula, and the influences of historical bloodthirsty figures such as Gilles de Rais, Elizabeth Báthory, and Vlad Ţepeş, the vampire developed into the modern stereotype.
The causes of vampiric generation were many and varied in original folklore. In Slavic and Chinese traditions, any corpse which was jumped over by an animal, particularly a dog or a cat, was feared to become one of the undead. A body with a wound which had not been treated with boiling water was also at risk. In Russian folklore, vampires were said to have once been witches or people who had rebelled against the Church while they were alive.
Cultural practices often arose that were intended to prevent a recently deceased loved one from turning into an undead revenant. Burying a corpse upside-down was widespread, as was placing earthly objects, such as scythes or sickles, near the grave to satisfy any demons entering the body or to appease the dead so that it would not wish to arise from its coffin. This method resembles the Ancient Greek practice of placing an obolus in the corpse's mouth to pay the toll to cross the River Styx in the underworld; it has been argued that instead, the coin was intended to ward off any evil spirits from entering the body, and this may have influenced later vampire folklore. This tradition persisted in modern Greek folklore about the vrykolakas, in which a wax cross and piece of pottery with the inscription "Jesus Christ conquers" were placed on the corpse to prevent the body from becoming a vampire. Other methods commonly practiced in Europe included severing the tendons at the knees or placing poppy seeds, millet, or sand on the ground at the grave site of a presumed vampire; this was intended to keep the vampire occupied all night by counting the fallen grains. Similar Chinese narratives state that if a vampire-like being came across a sack of rice, it would have to count every grain; this is a theme encountered in myths from the Indian subcontinent as well as in South American tales of witches and other sorts of evil or mischievous spirits or beings.
Apotropaics—mundane or sacred items able to ward off revenants—such as garlic or holy water are common in vampire folklore. The items vary from region to region; a branch of wild rose and hawthorn plant are said to harm vampires; in Europe, sprinkling mustard seeds on the roof of a house was said to keep them away. Other apotropaics include sacred items, for example a crucifix, rosary, or holy water. Vampires are said to be unable to walk on consecrated ground, such as those of churches or temples, or cross running water. Although not traditionally regarded as an apotropaic, mirrors have been used to ward off vampires when placed facing outwards on a door (in some cultures, vampires do not have a reflection and sometimes do not cast a shadow, perhaps as a manifestation of the vampire's lack of a soul). This attribute, although not universal (the Greek vrykolakas/tympanios was capable of both reflection and shadow), was utilized by Bram Stoker in Dracula and has remained popular with subsequent authors and filmmakers. Some traditions also hold that a vampire cannot enter a house unless invited by the owner, although after the first invitation they can come and go as they please. Though folkloric vampires were believed to be more active at night, they were not generally considered vulnerable to sunlight.
Methods of destroying suspected vampires varied, with staking the most commonly cited method, particularly in southern Slavic cultures.[48] Ash was the preferred wood in Russia and the Baltic states, or hawthorn in Serbia, with a record of oak in Silesia. Potential vampires were most often staked though the heart, though the mouth was targeted in Russia and northern Germany and the stomach in northeastern Serbia. Piercing the skin of the chest was a way of "deflating" the bloated vampire; this is similar to the act of burying sharp objects, such as sickles, in with the corpse, so that they may penetrate the skin if the body bloats sufficiently while transforming into a revenant. Decapitation was the preferred method in German and western Slavic areas, with the head buried between the feet, behind the buttocks or away from the body. This act was seen as a way of hastening the departure of the soul, which in some cultures, was said to linger in the corpse. The vampire's head, body, or clothes could also be spiked and pinned to the earth to prevent rising. Gypsies drove steel or iron needles into a corpse's heart and placed bits of steel in the mouth, over the eyes, ears and between the fingers at the time of burial. They also placed hawthorn in the corpse's sock or drove a hawthorn stake through the legs. In a 16th-century burial near Venice, a brick forced into the mouth of a female corpse has been interpreted as a vampire-slaying ritual by the archaeologists who discovered it in 2006. Further measures included pouring boiling water over the grave or complete incineration of the body. In the Balkans a vampire could also be killed by being shot or drowned, by repeating the funeral service, by sprinkling holy water on the body, or by exorcism. In Romania garlic could be placed in the mouth, and as recently as the 19th century, the precaution of shooting a bullet through the coffin was taken. For resistant cases, the body was dismembered and the pieces burned, mixed with water, and administered to family members as a cure. In Saxon regions of Germany, a lemon was placed in the mouth of suspected vampires.
Vampires are sometimes considered to be shape-shifters not limited to the common bat stereotype depicted in cartoons and movies. (Rather, vampires are said to morph into a wide variety of animals such as wolves, rats, moths, spiders, and so on).
Vampires in European folklore are said to cast no shadow and no reflection, perhaps arising from folklore regarding the vampire's lack of a soul.
Some traditions hold that a vampire cannot enter a house unless invited. Christian tradition holds that vampires cannot enter a church or holy place, as they are servants of the devil.

Almost every major city in the world can boast being the home of today's undead. From New Orleans to Paris, Rome and mainland China. The Un Dead are everywhere. Many live in small rural towns and larger cities. The Actual reason is they love to not only feed but be part of communities. They though dead love to live the life they are given. Says Genevieve Sault of Galveston, Texas. " I have been a Vampire all my life and know many that were displaced because of recent hurricanes and disasters." Says Sault. "The dead do migrate these days but they always come home."

There are many possible routes of becoming a vampire none of which do I personally recommend. Some of the more prevalent mythological routes are all might deal with an individual going out sinning against God and his fellow man. There are many beliefs on how and why a person can and will become a vampire through the folklore. Committing a crime against the church or God such as suicides, heretics, schismatics and any thing that resulted as a person becoming excommunicated. Defrocked priest or wayward nuns, monks, Bishops, priests, reverends and friars were at one time thought to be the perfect candidates to become a vampire. The Catholic Church declared that suicide is one of the most by God unforgivable sins. Hence forth the reason why many believe Judas Iscariot , Jesus betraying Apostle walks the earth forever as the father of the modern Vampire. This is the reason that silver is a danger to vampires. Judas Iscariot, Hebrew: יהודה איש־קריות "Yehuda" Yəhûḏāh ʾΚ-qəriyyôṯ was, according to the New Testament, one of the twelve original Apostles of Jesus. Among the twelve, he was apparently designated to keep account of the "money bag" (Grk. γλωσσόκομον), but he is most traditionally known for his role in Jesus' betrayal into the hands of Roman authorities.
His name is also associated with a Gnostic gospel, the Gospel of Judas, that exists in an early fourth century Coptic text. Judas has been a figure of great interest to esoteric groups, such as many Gnostic sects, and has also been the subject of many philosophical writings, including The Problem of Natural Evil by Bertrand Russell and "Three Versions of Judas", a short story by Jorge Luis Borges.
The term Judas has entered many languages as a synonym for betrayer, and Judas has become the archetype of the betrayer in Western art and literature. Judas is given some role in virtually all literature telling the Passion story, and appears in a number of modern novels and movies.
Judas is mentioned in the synoptic gospels, the Gospel of John and at the beginning of Acts of the Apostles. Mark also states that the chief priests were looking for a "sly" way to arrest Jesus. They determine not to do so during the feast because they were afraid that the people would riot; instead, they chose the night before the feast to arrest him. Satan enters Judas at this time, as described by the Gospel of Luke.
According to the account given in the Gospel of John, Judas carried the disciples' money bag and betrayed Jesus for a bribe of "thirty pieces of silver" by identifying him with a kiss—"the kiss of Judas"—to arresting soldiers of the High Priest Caiaphas, who then turned Jesus over to Pontius Pilate's soldiers. These "pieces of silver" were most likely intended to be understood as silver Tyrian shekels.
There are two different canonical references to the remainder of Judas' life:
* The Gospel of Matthew says that, after Jesus' arrest by the Roman authorities (but before his execution), the guilt-ridden Judas returned the bribe to the priests and committed suicide by hanging. The priests, forbidden by Jewish law from returning the money to the treasury, used it to buy the potter's field in order to bury strangers. The Gospel account presents this as a fulfillment of prophecy.
* The Acts of the Apostles says that Judas used the bribe to buy a field, but fell down headfirst, and burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. This field is called Akeldama or Field Of Blood.
Another account was preserved by the early Christian leader, Papias: "Judas walked about in this world a sad example of impiety; for his body having swollen to such an extent that he could not pass where a chariot could pass easily, he was crushed by the chariot, so that his bowels gushed out."
But still another group believe that upon his death he became the first Vampire. Doomed to walk this earth until the day Jesus returns to judge him. By creating more of his kind, (Vampires). He is only doing this to keep himself from being alone. But his dark Gift is not for everyone and or it does not react the same on everyone. The Judas Vampire kiss as it is called, or Iscariot curse or strain that Judas delivers turns his spawn into a powerful vampire. But it also eventually drives them slowly but increasingly insane.
Others believe This curse did not start with Iscariot they will tell you it goes back to original sin. Those specific vampire clans claim that Cain is the first male Vampire who populated the world with this their evil spawn. If you want to go further back then you must think of the snake in the garden as the one that originally infected Eve with the pure first vampire strain. Its thought that she gave birth to her two sons one mortal, Able one a vampire Cain.

As being a vampire it's commonly believed in Christian Europe that such undead souls were unable to rest in the grave, especially in hallowed ground. As being a nosferatu or undead their bodies could not decay or become corrupt and must always return to their original dust (the most commonly accepted proof of vampiric infection) and they left their graves at night to prey upon the living who were granted the chance of salvation that they were denied. The act of excommunication prohibited one from receiving the sacraments of the church.
This case is similar to that of the suicide. He who died excommunicated was believed to be unable to return to dust or to find release from the body. Just as God cursed Cain to be not ever without life and roam the earth begging for someone to kill him. But by gods word no none could kill him. And of course Judas' suicide.
Evil doers or what some call sinners seem to be thought to become vampires. Many say it is because in a life time many people will curse an individual. when God see that the person is constantly cursed for all they do then he or the devil make the person undead. Those who were particularly cruel or violent in life were believed to be prime candidates to return from the grave as vampires. Those who led dissolute or debauched lives were also likely to return as vampires. This, of course, was only the case for those individuals who did not repent and receive absolution before death. Or refused to believe that Jesus was the messiah. Again, the soul was believed to be bound to the body, preventing the natural decomposition of the body. And while the soul was bound to the body it was also bound in servitude to Satan. Necromancers, Soothsayers, fortunetellers and those who practiced black magic or summoned spirits were believed to servants the devil and particularly subject to the infection of vampirism.
If a witch or a black sorcerer died unrepentant he, like the suicide or the excommunicated, was bound to earth and unable to pass into the next world. Also, the witch or sorcerer was more subjected to demonic infestation. The offspring of a witch or a sorcerer were also subjected to becoming a vampire after death. This was especially true if there was reason to suspect that the child might be the result of a union between a witch and an incubus or a sorcerer and a succubus. There was a strong link between the werewolf and the vampire. Unlike the vampire, the werewolf was not generally believed to be immortal. It was commonly held that when a werewolf died he was most likely to return as a vampire. Also, those who were killed by a werewolf were thought to be prime candidates for resurrection as a vampire. Often the two curses were to be found in the same geographic regions.
Natural-born vampires were also thought to occur. Many midwives used a number of signs for a birth in order to detect children who might be potential vampires. The children of prostitutes were always thought to become the undead when reaching adulthood. Any or all illegitimate children of illegitimate parents and the children they spawned were all thought to be Vampires. Women who died in childbirth, or the child who's mother died at their birth. If a baby was delivered with birthmarks or born with a full head of hear, a beard a mustache, a tail and or just teeth, children with fire red hair, seventh sons or daughters, children born with a veil, (membrane covering their heads cauls). In slovic countries where most had dark hair and eyes, any child who was blue-eyed and redheaded would become vampires after death.
Other beliefs include having a cat or other animal jump over the corpse or coffin before it gets properly buried, or being murdered and not attaining revenge for the murder, or by drinking the blood of a vampire.
How to prevent somebody from becoming a vampire
There are many recipes ,cures and ways to preserve the dead from being infested by the vampire. As well as those to dispatch it.
The Burial of a suspected individual of vampirism always draws large concern. In many Eastern European countries, it was thought that if a cat by chance had jumped over a corpse prior to burial, the dead would return as a vampire. According to some beliefs, in order to prevent a vampire from chewing its way out of the grave, people would stuff the mouth with certain coins or dirt, or prop or tie the mouth shut. In Romania, people buried a candle, a coin, and a towel with the corpse to prevent vampirism. Garlic or millet could be stuffed into the nostrils, eyes, and ears of a corpse to prevent vampirism. Apparently, vampires are obsessed with tying knots, and can become so engaged in the task that they neglect to rise from their graves and kill. In Northern Germany, corpses are buried enlaced into nets, so they cannot leave their graves until they have untied all the knots. Greeks will cast fishing nets over their doorways to keep vampires out; this same obsession will force the vampire to count every knot before he can enter.
Vampires in the 21st Century
Undead bloodsuckers have never been more appealing then they are today. Or more human vice for the legendary dead is in world cinema. The Vampire movies of the 21st Century seem to make their lives more human in nature then inhuman. Sure, these new creations of vampires still troll the night, feed on blood and keep secrets from all but the most remarkable of human beings they relate to. Love and honor among the dead seems to be the general ongoing theme.
