Please Raijū Hunt Responsibility! |
The Raijū It Can And Will Haunt You!

Raijū (雷獣,"thunder animal" or "thunder beast") is a legendary creature from Japanese mythology. Its body is composed of either lightning or fire and may be in the shape of a cat, tanuki, monkey, or weasel. The form of a white and blue wolf (or even a wolf wrapped in lightning) is also common. It may also fly about as a ball of lightning or fire (in fact, the creature may be an attempt to explain the phenomenon of ball lightning). Its cry sounds like thunder.
Raiju is the companion of Raijin, the Shinto god of lightning. While the beast is generally calm and harmless, during thunderstorms, it becomes agitated and leaps about in trees, fields, and even buildings (trees that have been struck by lightning are said to have been scratched by Raiju's claws).
Another of Raiju's peculiar behaviors is sleeping in human navels. This prompts Raiden to shoot lightning arrows at Raiju to wake the creature up, and thus harms the person in whose belly the demon is resting. Superstitious people therefore often sleep on their stomachs during bad weather, but other legends say that Raiju will only hide in the navels of people who sleep outdoors.

This is reported photo of a real Rajui hiding in the navel of a man from New York. The beast refused to leave until he had it ritually removed this month.
Several creatures in anime and manga are inspired by Raiju, such as the Pokémon Raikou (Pokémon) and Raichu as well as the Clow Card The Thunder in Cardcaptor Sakura. The PS2 video game Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call also includes the Raiju as a recruitable enemy. http://www.monstropedia.org/index.php?

The Raijū is thought to haunt the world not just in Japan. Thunder Beast as they are called often haunt those that fear storms such as typhoon's, hurricanes and electrical storms. Many today will still tell you tales of the thunder beast jumping through the clouds only to be seen as a flash of lightening illuminates them in mid air.
Many believe such creatures only attack in the strike of a bolt of lightening. The old tales tell that the strong blast of light scatters them and the rumblings of thunder or their growls and pounding of their paws against the heavens and earth. Many who Interviewed have stated many differences in what is openly known by searching the internet. And the separation between animal and myth is sketchy to say the least.
Many believe in Japan and will openly state that the beast is catlike. To be marked by a thunder beast is to be doomed by the horrible death of electrocution.

The raijū as depicted in Ban KōKē's Kanda-Jihitsu. It lives in the human or mamals' deep navel. It perfers innies to outies but no one is safe from having one. Many beleive they are spitirual vampires in nature.
Description:
The animal in it's true form is said to be five times larger then a full grown tiger. Others liken it to that of a giant badger.

The Raijū - Part II
by Brent Swancer also see: http://www.cryptomundo.com/cryptozoo-news/raiju/
In Part I of this series, we learned about this unique thunder beast and ended wondering what sort of flesh and blood animals such a seemingly fantastical creature could possibly be. Let’s take a look at some of the possibilities and dig deeper into the potential biological origins of this creature of Japanese folklore.

The physical description and disposition of the Raijū seems to fit in very well with something perhaps from the Mustelidae family of mammals. This family encompasses a wide range of carnivores, including badgers, weasels, wolverines, and otters. The Raijū accounts tell of something that seems very much like a mustelid in appearance, often describing them as badger or weasel like. Mustelids are also known for their sharp teeth and claws, much like the Raijū. On wolverines or a burrowing mustelid such as the badger, the claws are especially quite pronounced, and such claws would also make sense for a tree dwelling animal like the Raijū for use in climbing. The general fierce disposition and aggressive temperament of some mustelids also fits in well with what is reported with Raijū. http://www.cryptomundo.com/cryptozoo-news/raiju-ii/
Lurking the halls of Buddhist temples and museums across Japan are a host of monster mummies — the preserved remains of demons, mermaids, kappa, tengu, raijū, and even human monks. Here are a few remarkable specimens for the adventurous and brave at heart. In the 1960s, Yūzanji temple in Iwate prefecture received a raijū mummy as a gift from a parishioner. The origin of the mummy, as well as how the parishioner obtained it, is a mystery. Also please see: http://www.pinktentacle.com/tag/attraction/page/2/

Raijū mummy at Yūzanji temple
The mummy looks like that of a cat at first glance, but the legs are rather long and the skull has no visible eye sockets.

Raijū mummy at Saishōji temple
A similar raijū mummy is on display at Saishōji temple in Niigata prefecture. http://www.pinktentacle.com/tag/attraction/page/2/
Raijin (雷神, raijin?) is a god of thunder and lightning in Japanese mythology. His name is derived from the Japanese words rai (雷, meaning thunder) and shin (神, god). He is typically depicted as a demon beating drums to create thunder, usually with the symbol tomoe drawn in the drums.
Raijin is sometimes credited with eating the bellybuttons or abdomen of children, and in the event of thunder, parents traditionally tell their children to hide their navels so that they are not taken away. Raijin's companion is the demon Raiju.
Raijin is also known by the following names:
* Kaminari-sama: kaminari (雷, thunder) and -sama (様, a Japanese honorific)
* Raiden-sama: rai (雷, thunder), den (電, lightning), and -sama
* Narukami: naru (鳴, thundering/rolling) and kami (神, god)
In Japanese art, the deity is often depicted together with Fūjin, the wind god.
Raijin is a well-known deity and his fame has spawned characters in many forms of Japanese media. He is often made fun of, for example in an episode of Kyorochan. In the West, Raijin entered pop culture in the fighting game Mortal Kombat, which contained a character called Raiden. He has also played a minor role in the Japanese role playing game Final Fantasy VIII as one of Seifer Almasy's henchmen. In Chrono Trigger, he and his brother Raijin join to form the Masamune. There is also a character in Metal Gear Solid called Raiden. Raijin has been depicted as part of the pantheon of gods in other contexts, including an appearance with other Eastern elemental gods in the film Big Trouble in Little China. In the tokusatsu series Madan Senki Ryukendo, all three Madan Warriors, right after transforming, say their names followed by the word "Raijin!", which stands for "wake up!" or "stand up!".
Many who I questioned on the existence of the Raijū explainted to me that thes ghost live deep hidden in the navels of those have bad luck. The Raijū is a tick. It sucks away your luck and shortens your life. The Raijū Stealls your life engery and puts one on a negeative path.
One can often tell if The Raijū is living in there navel because they will find strange lint that is not the color of the close they where. And a foul odor usually comong from the depths.
The Raijū some say perfer the hairy navels of men. those that are deep and dark.

Raiju ~ In popular culture
- Raiju is a likely inspiration for the Pokémon Raikou, which is described in the Pokédex as having a roar that sounds like crashing thunder. It is also possibly the inspiration for Jolteon, a small creature resembling a dog, cat, or fox composed of sharp, lightning-like fur.
- Raiju may also be the basis for Elecmon, a squat cat/fox like Digimon with lightning based attacks.
- In Captain Tsubasa, Hyuga Kojiro's third special shot was named "Raiju Shot" because of its sharp, uppercutting effect.
- In xxxHolic, a Raiju get attracted to the electronics shop on the way somewhere and got stuck on a tight corner and couldn’t get out. Watanuki got out and in payment, Raiju made all the broken appliances in Yūko’s home work again. His appearance is of a little cute ball-like monster, but he have a really loud voice (reference to the thunder-like cry of the Raiju).
- In DemiKids, Boltrift might be based on Raiju as its description states it rides on lightning bolts that descend from the sky.
- In Naruto, Kakashi Hatake uses an unnamed lightning jutsu that looks like a wolf. This may be a reference to the Raijū.
When a Raiju hidee in the navel of person Steong changes occur in the person. From the want and desire to live a wild tragic life to somone who abandons all and wants to live off the land. Conventional thinking goes out of the window.
The Navel will also give off strange oders and the person often starts diggin in it with sharp needles or points of sicors to clean and scratch the strange itch it causes. And some times they bite hard.
The navel (also known colloquially as the belly button, or clinically as the umbilicus) is a scar on the abdomen, caused when the umbilical cord is removed from a newborn baby. All placental mammals have a navel. It is fairly conspicuous in humans.
In humans, the scar can appear as a depression (often referred to colloquially as an innie) or as a protrusion (outie). Although they can be separated into these two categories, navels actually vary quite widely among people in terms of size, shape, depth/length, and overall appearance. As navels are essentially scars, and not in any way defined by genetics, they can serve as a way of distinguishing between identical twins in the absence of other identifiable marks.
Fashion sometimes exploits the navel through clothing that leaves part of the lower abdomen (i.e. the midriff) bare, a usage that is much more common for women than for men. Displaying a bare navel has been and still is a taboo in certain Western cultures: for example, in the 1960s, Barbara Eden was not allowed to show her navel on the TV show I Dream of Jeannie.
The modern trend of exposing the navel has usually been confined to women, aside from a male belly-button shirt fad in 1980s fashion (men usually bare their navels only when they take their shirts off entirely).
While the West was more resistant to midriff-baring dresses until the 1980s, it has always been a fashion in Indian women attire. Indian women and especially from Southern India have traditionally worn saris that bares the midriff and the navel. In Indian culture, exposure of the navel is not considered a taboo and has, in fact, long been accepted as a graceful identifying mark of a woman. A dimpled navel is considered a special asset of any prospective bride especially amongst South Indian women and an important quality of any budding Bollywood actress. Other Indian communities that take navels in their stride include the Rajasthanis and Gujaratis, whose women leave the midriff exposed while wearing short cholis with traditional gypsy skirts. However, these women cover their heads with a 'chador' and even cover their faces in front of strangers, which lends credence to the belief that navel-baring in India has a symbolic, almost mystical, association with birth and life and that the display is meant to emphasise the centrality of nature in the nurture role.
Along with the acceptance of navel display in Western societies, navel piercing is becoming more common among young women. Short shirts that expose navels may also be worn to expose stomach/navel tattoos.
Sexuality
The navel's transfiguration from a vestigial fetal feeding tube to a person's erotic appendage can be ascertained from the attention it gets, ranging from a partner's casual stares to more intimate finger prodding. Navels can be the focus of sexual fetishism, especially among men. Belly button fetishism includes the act of fingering, licking, tickling, and torturing (with objects such as needles) of the soft flesh of the navel cavity. While cleavage of the breasts is certainly meant to display feminine charms and has a risqué, "turn-on" appeal, a navel can also be considered an object of sexual appeal. This attitude towards the navel (in contrast with breast cleavage) is shown in the hit 1960s situation comedy Gilligan's Island. In Gilligan's Island, Ginger, the sexy movie star, often displays cleavage, but very rarely shows her navel, whereas Mary Ann, who is more the ingénue type, does sometimes show her navel, but does not show cleavage.
In the Song of Solomon, a book in the Hebrew Bible, there are allusions to exotic things in nature, with frequent interweaving of nature with erotic imagery. The navel figures in Solomon's lavish praise of his love (the country girl, Sulaimi) thus: "thy navel is like a round goblet, which wanteth not liquor"(7:2).
The modern-day Deirdre Day-MacLeod describes the navel's appeal thus: "Neither procreative nor nutritive, perhaps it is the navel's lack of obvious purpose, combined with its audacious, almost arrogant, spot right there in the middle of things, that sucks its admirers in."
Aki Sinkkonen of the University of Helsinki has suggested that navels are used to attract potential mates and is pursuing further research on this subject. His hypothesis "makes a lot of biological sense," according to Gerald Weissmann of the New York University School of Medicine.
