Zombies as we all known are thought to be mindless creatures void of reason, understanding and souls. Many who research the subject of the walking dead find that the practice of zombification entails the removal of ones living soul or in essence consciousness from a living being. It is in some cases set free to roam the world in search of a new body to inhabit. In most of the understandings you can learn of these living dead creatures, it is often passed down verbally from Voodoo chiefs, Priestess, and black magicians. Very often come the many strange tales of how the person who became a zombie through curse or hexed spell then set free. Actual Zombie ghosts are thought to be in a state of chaos and desire to return to life. Many in the secret Societies believe that these lost Zombie souls are the most dangerous of ghosts to encounter.

Zombie ghosts are often the ghosts that are thought to haunt a person to madness or the point of suicide. The reason of course is to steal the body of the tormented living being they haunt. These ghosts will often stop at nothing to get the body they desire. Modern day Demons, poltergeist and those dark forces that all truly fear, or thought to be these treacherous Zombie ghosts.

If you live in South America then you are more then aware of the tales and ghostly haunted accounts of such evil Zombies. Many believe a Zombie has to be a dead living being. But spirit Zombies seem to be the more evil of all incarnate spirits that could ever exist. They will as many in modern movies utter. eat your brain. The ghost Zombies seems to eat a way at a persons brain causing the person to lose mental control so the Zombie Ghost can take over. These spirits are thought to enter through a persons ears as they sleep. That's why so many people in the south suffer from earache. Or why they sleep with cotton, wax, or earplugs each night.

Many in the Gulf coast Region from Miami to Galveston and all points in between often have a verbal tradition that tells of the physical Zombie legions that roam the area. And once a zombie spell is broken that does not mean that the ghost of said zombie still does not follow it's masters commands. One old Civil war tale tells of how a group of Zombies defended a lone plantation in Mississippi for over three months before it was captured. The Zombies were dispatched by feeding them pure salt. This many believe will break the spell that holds them under control and also sets the body free to drop to the ground forever dead. The custom of putting a table spoon of salt in the mouth of the freshly deceased before burial is still practiced by many.

But once the Zombie soul is set free the actual ghost is then on the prowl looking for a new corpse to inhabit. These ghosts are said to stop at nothing to re animate a body and live again. The Voodooist of course and those that practice it or those touched by it's evil side usually take overly extreme precautions to keep their loved ones from being taken over by the ghosts. In Louisiana and Texas Voodoo folkloric tales, Zombies often visited loved ones and caused mischief or deaths in the neighborhoods they inhabited when they were alive. They wore shrouds and were often described as bloated and of ruddy or dark countenance, markedly different from today's gaunt, Zombie which dates from the early Nineteenth Century. Although zombie entities have been recorded in most cultures, the term zombie was not popularized until the early 18th century, after an influx of zombie superstition into United States.

According to some sources, living zombies could be sorcerers, voodoo cursed individuals or stolen corpse from cemeteries, Hospitals, Funeral homes, morgues or even from the spot where the person died. In modern times, however, the zombie is generally held to be a fictitious entity. Early folkloric belief in zombies has been ascribed to the ignorance of the body's process of decomposition after death and how people in pre-industrial societies tried to rationalize this, creating the figure of the Zombie to explain the mysteries of death. In New Orleans drug crazed individuals, drunkards and the mentally handicapped have at times been mistaken for the walking the dead.

Top Five Precautions to stop Zombification.

1. Pour one to two table spoons of Salt in to the open mouth of a corpse before burial.

2. Some will nail the body to the bottom of it's coffin. Or bind the limbs, mouth and often ask the Funeral director to cut out the tongue of the deceased and burn it. Many believe that a person cannot be zombified unless the bokor takes the tongue and hides it away in a jar.

3. If you bury a person face down and the body is possessed by a Zombie ghosts it is thought that it will dig it's way to hell rather then digging upward returning to haunt the living.

4. Embalming is said to have no effect on if a body can become a real zombie or not. To stop the body from becoming un- dead Morticians often will place a rosary in the persons mouth and a pound of sea salt or kosher salt in the corpses stomach cavity.

5. Never bury a person on Sunday. To do this is to make them an abomination before God. Supposedly the body will be spit up from the ground at midnight. And the roaming ghosts looking for a body will take possession of it. To put the corpse back in its grave one must repeat the funeral service the very next day before sunset, and sprinkling huge amounts of pure white salt and holy water on the body while in its coffin. And of course a formal voodoo exorcism must be performed post haste.

There are several possible etymologies of the word zombie. One possible origin is jumbie, the West Indian term for "ghost". Another is nzambi, the Kongo word meaning "spirit of a dead person." According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word entered English circa 1871; it's derived from the Louisiana Creole or Haitian Creole zonbi, which in turn is of Bantu origin. A zombie is a person who is believed to have died and been brought back to life without speech or free will. It is akin to the Kimbundu nzúmbe ghost.

According to the followers of actual Vodou, a dead person can be revived by a bokor or Voodoo sorcerer. Zombies remain under the control of the bokor since they have no will of their own. "Zombi" is also another name of the Vodou snake god Damballah Wedo, of Niger-Congo origin; it is akin to the Kongo word nzambi, which means "god". There also exists within the voudon tradition the zombi astral which is a human soul that is captured by a bokor and used to enhance the bokor's power.

Most Zombies seem to be a will-less and speechless living human beings but not dead by medical standards. In areas of the West Indies, Louisiana Creole Hoodoo Voodoo or Haitian Creole They are called Zombies, Zombi, zonbi. Akin to Kimbundu nzúmbe these ghost are thought to be capable only of automatic movement, their powers or of the only significance to those that have died and been supernaturally reanimated. These particular ghosts are thought to be easily captured since they only wish to live in human form and can be tricked or threatened into doing their masters bidding alone.

Zombie Apotropaics refers to objects such as voodoo hoodoo amulets and talismans or other symbols intended to "ward off evil" or "avert or combat evil."sacred items able to ward off The walking Dead —such as pure white salt or holy water are common in zombie folklore. The items vary from region to region; a branch of willow knotted 9 times and placed around the zombies neck is to stop one in it's tracks. In Galveston, Texas, sprinkling salt on the grave of a suspected zombie will keep it pinned in its grave. Other apotropaics include sacred items, for example a crucifix, rosary, or holy water. Zombies are said to be unable to walk on consecrated ground, such as those of churches or temples, or cross running water but they can move under water. Some traditions also hold that a zombie cannot enter a house or step foot on property if red brick dust is sprinkled across the doorstep.

Real Zombie Research And Information

In 1937, while researching folklore in Haiti, Zora Neale Hurston encountered the case of a woman that appeared in a village, and a family claimed she was Felicia Felix-Mentor, a relative who had died and been buried in 1907 at the age of 29. Hurston pursued rumors that the affected persons were given powerful drugs, but she was unable to locate individuals willing to offer much information. She wrote:

Several decades later, Wade Davis, a Harvard ethnobotanist, presented a pharmacological case for zombies in two books, The Serpent and the Rainbow (1985) and Passage of Darkness: The Ethnobiology of the Haitian Zombie (1988). Davis traveled to Haiti in 1982 and, as a result of his investigations, claimed that a living person can be turned into a zombie by two special powders being entered into the blood stream (usually via a wound). The first, coup de poudre (French: 'powder strike'), includes tetrodotoxin (TTX), the poison found in the pufferfish. The second powder is composed of dissociatives such as datura. Together, these powders were said to induce a death-like state in which the victim's will would be entirely subject to that of the bokor. Davis also popularized the story of Clairvius Narcisse, who was claimed to have succumbed to this practice.

Symptoms of TTX poisoning range from numbness and nausea to paralysis, unconsciousness, and death, but do not include a stiffened gait or a deathlike trance. According to neurologist Terence Hines, the scientific community dismisses tetrodotoxin as the cause of this state, and Davis' assessment of the nature of the reports of Haitian zombies is overly credulous. Scottish psychiatrist R. D. Laing further highlighted the link between social and cultural expectations and compulsion, in the context of schizophrenia and other mental illness, suggesting that schizogenesis may account for some of the psychological aspects of zombification.
