Pazuzu was an Assyrian and Babylonian demonic god of the first millennium BC. He normally has a dog-like face like here, and where his body is depicted he has a scaly torso, a snake-headed penis, the talons of a bird and usually wings. He is often regarded as an evil underworld demon, but he seems also to have played a beneficent role as a protector against disease-bearing winds (especially the west wind). He was closely associated with the demoness Lamashtu who stole babies from their mother's womb or when newly born. Pazuzu acted to counter her evil: he forced her back to the underworld. Amulets of Pazuzu like this were therefore placed in windows hung inside and out of dwellings, attached to bedroom furniture. Smaller versions were hung around the necks of pregnant women. TALES OF REPORTED REAL WEREWOLVES AND SHAPE SHIFTER SIGHTINGS IN MARSHALL, TEXAS
Story by LISA LEE HARP WAUGH
Many local people who live in East Texas in or around Marshall will tell you the stories of encounters with real werewolves or strange shape shifters as being nothing new.
Several supposedly real stories have been past down through the many generations as well as new sightings and encounters or often spoken of even in this modern day.
As a young child, my sweet old great, great granny Lee, from Homer, Louisiana, use to tell me about the wolf man of Marshall, Texas. She said she had seen the beast herself as it attacked a neighbors pig. She swore on a old family Bible that what she saw was not man nor known beast. She said it was a man wolf and could be nothing more then that.
The Strange Twisting Tale Of The Man Wolf Of Marshall, Texas
Great Great Granny Lee's Tale and Description Of The Man Wolf Of Marshall, Texas. This Is Her personal True Life Encounter As Told To Me.
This beast man-wolf, my dear old Granny Lee often described as people actually seeing what was a half human, half wolf. It has been noted and told that they are over 6 foot tall when they stand. They have large yellow/orange eyes and long white sharp teeth, and a blunt long snout.
His face is always not quite a mans and not quite a wolf. Though some report they are covered with a full coat of hair and others tell of the coat being sparse and patchy.
Though reports sometimes differ the common factors are that the werewolves face was always seemingly flat, blunt and yet pointed and very grotesquely long.
The Man Wolf of not so long ago was often encountered along Stagecoach Road. This of course is one of the most haunted hotspots in all of Marshall. Other say it was Dead Woman's Road or Sedberry Street as it is now known.
This Were-beast, animal or as some call it a Dogman, was known for slaying a sheep, or a cow where it stood in the blink of an eye. They say the thousands of chickens they kill could feed the whole state of Texas for a year. And don't forget the many stories of them killing possibly a man, woman, or child or two for good measure.
The old stories around here you will hear most often is of poor old Ms. Ethel Briggs.
She was a lonely widow woman who's husband and young son was reportedly out right killed by the man wolf.
Ethel's husband use to raise all the normal things it took to survive the daily life of the time. Then one day he found where something broke into his many chicken pens and killed his live stock or carried them away. He then found chewed up pieces showing real signs that they were being killed and eaten. He set out to trap and kill what he thought was a large coyote or Mountain lion. Ethel's husband knew what he had to do. So he went out that night and as the story goes never returned.
They found his foot with the toes chewed off that next morning laying by the front door.
They found his left arm missing three fingers and half a thumb near the old barn. His head was by the creek missing it's nose, ears and tongue. And of course his lips were chewed off and the area of his cheeks showed deep large punctures and tooth gouge marks.
And the very next night her youngest boy, was taken before her eyes. He was the red headed one, who set off looking with his mother for the rest of his dads chewed up remains to bury on that cold February day.
That very next morn he was found, at least a large part of his upper torso just a near five miles away. And the sheriff was called into to come and investigate the death.
Poor Ms Ethel said she had seen the beast when the Town Sheriff came to call. And that she had buried only the three large pieces of her husbands carcass behind the great field he use to till. And she went on to say that she and her 4 other kids had found them scattered around the property.
She said what she saw was not that of a man, or just a mangy rabies infected dog. It was more then just very large and it walked like a man with a strange apparent slight limp or jake leg.
She also stated and noted it ran off on all fours with her husbands left leg in it's mouth.
That's what she said she saw as she watched it tear him apart from her own front porch on that cold February full moon night.
The next day she went on to say, that she saw it plainly again in the bright winter full moon light. And she watched and froze in terror again as her youngest boy of 6 was taken before her eyes.
She said she screamed as he was dragged off by his privates into the dark woods, when a huge half naked man sparsely covered with long dark hair or half human fur covered beast grabbed him as he stopped to pee along side the road.
This she says happened as they searched for his poor daddy's carcass.
Whether this Lycan urban legend strange tale is true or not. I am at odds to say.
Still many say Ethel's ghosts still haunts the spot where the old Briggs' farm once stood. And Ms Ethel's ghost is still searching for the man wolf that that stole away her husband and youngest son.
But this the sorted told as true real accounts of the story, doesn't end there.
The second eldest daughter was said to have been brutally fell upon and savagely raped that very night as her little brother died by the fangs and claws of the beast of Marshall, Texas, or by the Man-Wolf, that is which ever you want to call it.
All this occurred as the young child ran into the dark... as she heard her mother scream as her brother was being dragged into the darkness.
This they say Ms. Ethel never told the towns sheriff because of the shame. And as we all know that of her not wanting people to find out her innocent, sweet child being raped by the creature that was of the devil and a man wolf or dog man.
People who say that there are werewolves living and stalking the night in Marshall Texas might be a little crazy, but maybe not. We all know it carries the stigma through out ones life, to the prestige of a virgin unmarried child of 9 being marked for life by such a horrific awful tragedy. My old Granny Lee would say.
Nine months latter and still a mere child herself she gave birth to a infant so foul they had to kill this thing by smashing it's head with a hammer and a old shoe, that is, as it slid from her womb to the floor. And they drove a large rusty railroad spike through it's new born soft head.
And my old old Granny Lee would say she even knew where they buried this werewolf child under the dark of the Texas moon.
She would say to me she personally knew this because she seen it with her own eyes. And that is for she was the sole midwife that was there at the birth.
Old Ms Ethel had told my Great Granny the whole tale before the baby was born by her now 10 year old daughter. Because we all know that 10 year olds having a baby is wrong. And people would talk so my great granny was sworn to silence and until my granny told me, she swore and said she had kept quiet.
Some people in these parts say it was not a strange werewolf prowling that awful full moon night, but that of Ms Ethel and her daughter that were the wolf or dog women that ate her poor husband and son.
You have to understand directly how ghost and werewolf attack stories in Marshall, Texas do change over the years and how tales get twisted. But my old sweet white haired Granny Lee told me what she knew was the truth.
She said the crimes were so gruesome at that time that no one told what they really knew or thought at her trial.
They hung Ms Ethel by her long red hair in the middle of town and killed her by having 5 or 6 big men shoving pitchforks and and sharp ax's through her body for an hour or more.
Her daughter they beat with heavy large clubs until the only thing that was left was a stain in the street.
You see after my old frightened Granny Lee delivered the baby she went and told the sheriff straight on what she had witnessed. And how the daughter and mother had killed the new born babe. And what she had found so strange during the time she spent delivering the baby.
And how she was descended on by the wolf and almost did not escape with her very life. This as she traveled back to town after the birth.
But as my Great Granny stated... no one believed her. Several people came forward and said that Ethel and her young daughter were the true fiends.
I have to say, here now that many people who knew my my old Granny Lee they say she never ever lied.
But in hearing this tale I did not know what to believe. Cos' you know my old old great Granny Lee said it was true!
She said the towns folks believed that the true shape shifter in these parts were Ethel and her daughter and many people came forward to testify to the strange things they saw the two do firsthand.
Ethel so cold never shed a tear, as the Sheriff testified to the Judge, when she told her tale of how her husband and child had died.
And a neighbor or two all came forward and said how they had seen Ethel running naked down Dead Woman's Road howling at the moon and covered in blood on more then one occasion with her young also naked daughter in tow on several early morns as the sun rose in recent months before the murders occurred.
By using a so-called wolf belt, any person could transform themselves into a werewolf. Or so the old tales from around the world do tell.
Great Granny said they found several strange hair covered belts that they believed were made from the pelts of a wolf in the house.
The old story's often tell that anyone who purposely fastens such a belt around himself would turn into a wolf.
To break the spell someone only needs to call out the name of a person who had turned themselves into a wolf, that person would regain his human form.
One witness a close neighbor came forward stating they had seen a huge she wolf and her pup. Then upon calling out Ethel's name the wolf transformed itself immediately on the spot into the old widow herself. And the pup ran into the thick brush and disappeared.
A werewolf belt was made of a hide from a large wolf killed in the month of February. It was used in conjunction with salves, ointments and potions to transform a person into the beast.
The belief that such a belt is real and often used to transform one self is often done by witches.
My Great Granny said after the trial and the execution of the mother and daughter in the center of town, she went back home to Homer, Louisiana and never told a soul to what strange things she had seen and witnessed.
My Great Granny also told me that she was a relative of the Great General Lee and that in his youth he too had come across a werewolf and lived to tell the tale.
The Wild Wolf Or Dog Girl Of Marshall, Texas
A feral child (feral, wild, or undomesticated) is a human child who has lived isolated from human contact from a very young age, and has no (or little) experience of human care, loving or social behavior, and, crucially, of human language.
Many tell the strange weird story in these here parts of poor Carolyn Thomas while others often question these claims and its authenticity.
She had been stolen in the night as the story goes sometimes around 1949 or as recent as 1962 by either a coyote, a large dog, or as many believe a large red wolf. And that she had been by all signs and accounts living with a pack of 12 wild dogs for over 50 years since she was stolen from her crib.
Carolyn Thomas as many tell of her and their personal sightings and strange otherworldly encounters, that she had a wolf or doglike behavior. Those that say they have cornered her tell that Carolyn was unable to speak any human language and often ran away on all fours if someone tried to catch her.
She is also believed to still be crouching in the shadows and deep woods around Marshall. And late at night many say they have seen her dirty and naked as she prowls the city streets of Marshall, Nesbit, Scotsville, and Jefferson, Texas looking for scraps to eat.
From Wikipedia~ Some feral children have been confined by people (usually their own parents); in some cases this child abandonment was due to the parents' rejection of a child's severe intellectual or physical impairment. Feral children may have experienced severe child abuse or trauma before being abandoned or running away. Others are alleged to have been brought up by animals; some are said to have lived in the wild on their own. Just over one hundred incidents have been reported in English.
Myths, legends, and fictional stories have depicted feral children reared by wild animals such as wolves and bears.
Famous examples include Ibn Tufail's Hayy, Ibn al-Nafis' Kamil, Rudyard Kipling's Mowgli, Edgar Rice Burroughs's Tarzan, and the legends of Atalanta, Enkidu and Romulus and Remus.
Legendary and fictional feral children are often depicted as growing up with relatively normal human intelligence and skills and an innate sense of culture or civilization, coupled with a healthy dose of survival instincts; their integration into human society is made to seem relatively easy. One notable exception is Mowgli, for whom living with humans proved to be extremely difficult.
These mythical children are often depicted as having superior strength, intelligence and morals compared to "normal" humans, the implication being that because of their upbringing they represent humanity in a pure and uncorrupted state: similar to the noble savage.
The subject is treated with a certain amount of realism in François Truffaut's 1970 film L'Enfant Sauvage (UK: The Wild Boy, US: The Wild Child), where a scientist's efforts in trying to rehabilitate a feral boy meet with great difficulty.
An account that many say was not fully documented often circulated during the late 1990's. It was that someone driving home late at night had a strange sighting of old Carolyn. She was dirty and nude, her hair a matted mess and now described as being in her late 50's or early 60's on one hot July night.
The witnesses also a retired Jefferson police officer who said he saw her first hand as she was copulating with a large pack of several he-dogs on South Polk Street in Jefferson, Texas and very near the City Park.
Truth or a grand great Texan lie. Yet to this day many still keep their children locked up safe at home on full moon nights just in case this story is 100% true.
The Shape Shifters Of Marshall, Texas
The wolf men or often considered as being just plain shape shifters in Marshall and are often known as the Marsh Man Wolf or just as Caddo Lake Swamp Wolfman.
Supposedly in Marshall near Tick Pond as many stories do tell. It is where many a real werewolf was killed in the late 1800's. There is a place many say is located deep in the bayou country just outside of town where a magical lamp made of the fat and gristle of a wolf man always burns. Local legend has it that if the magic lamp ever goes out the werewolves will return and take revenge on the established well meaning Texan families that sent them to their untimely rest.
The most common Wolf Man tales are accounts of him impersonating someone familiar to his victim it leads into the deep woods near Tick Pond.
Folks around here claim that these large were-creatures have magic powers and the strange ability to replicate sounds, voices and even a living or dead persons appearance. Though often many in these parts tell that those that have encountered the beasts say that the clue that this forest or woods person is not who they appear to be is that they are always stating they are mortally hurt and need help finding their way out of the dense woods.
A sure sign the old tales tell is the the creature is always limping on his leg which he can not change totally from its original state... that of a wolves paw.
It is believed that they look for deer hunters and tricks them deeper into the woods where even well seasoned experienced hunters can not find a way back. And at they point they lunge upon their victims ripping out their hair from them heads.
This is believed to be the part of some magic spell, or part of their power they have which keeps the hunter lost in the deep woods forever or turns them into one of their own kind.
They are said to live deep in the Caddo slews or bayou. And on full moon nights in the long winter months they gather their harem of she wolves and mate with human captives.
Others say that the Marshall Texas Dog Men takes the physical form of a man a living person, woman, child or a recently dead family member or a loved one, and then persuades his lost victims to follow him to unknown places in the woods where they are led into traps or left forever lost with no way out.
Others concerning the old tales of encounters with wolf men in Marshall say that he appears in the shape of a very large red he wolf with yellow eyes but missing it's tail.
These lycans are different then many others in the world for it is said to have the ability to turn into any shape form or animal to that of an old rotting tree stump or log.
These strange weird Texan wolf men or actually shape shifters or thought to be more often encountered as being ghost or spirit like in nature.
Sometimes Texas Shape Shifter have been known to also steal several human children in the course of a month, usually infants under a year old, and raise them as its own.
The Night Beasts In The Dark Woods Of Tick Pond Road
Foot prints if you follow them along the bayou they always start out as human and and before your very eyes you can see them clearly and you can see where the person fell to the ground and the foot impressions become the paw prints of a great large wolf.
Tick Pond Road as we locals call it, is actually named Tallaferro Road and it is located near Dead woman's Road. This lonely stretch a densely wooded area, is said to be the home or where the secret den, of a large pack of werewolves who congregate and wildly mate in the light of the first full moon in October through late February.
They are also known to lure humans, cattle, sheep and dogs into its trap for mating purposes. A human thus stolen by the Texas Swamp Wolf Man becomes one of them if he is bitten or he is snatched bald by the beast who is said to eat that persons hair as part of some strange hex or spell to control them.
Most locals including myself will avoid this area during the winter months knowing of the many horrid tales of these night beasts roaming the area looking for their prey.
Those who frequent the area will say that the ghosts of the victims of werewolf attacks haunt the area and try to scare away those that might be in danger.
Wolf Woman, sometimes also known as the Wolf Lady, is a shape-shifting woman and her often told tales circulate around Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas. The strange terrifying old stories tell that often you might see her as she appears at various times in many forms.
Some descriptions describe her as a human female upper body and the lower body of a wolf.
The Wolf Woman is said to sometimes be seen as a beautiful naked woman just off the trail or behind a bush, calling to those who come across her for help. Wolf Woman is often said to have all the appearance of a normal young human woman at first glance, except her feet which are those of a real wolves.
These Texas she-wolves as the urban legends goes, act as woodland sirens, leading men who dare to trek into the deep woods of Marshall, Texas to their deaths.
Shape Shifting Texans
Today Marshall is not the only city believed to be under the curse of the full moon.
No, they're not playing basketball like they used to in the '80s. Today's teen wolves, with names like Wolf Blackheart, are hanging out in front of shopping malls and wearing weird contact lenses. One intrepid news team got the footage.
My Personal Encounter with a She-Werewolf In Marshall, Texas
I once owned and operated a very successful a restaurant in Marshall called Jitterbugs. It was located on the square and was once an old funeral home dating back to the 1800's. The oven which was located on the east wall of the building is where the location of the actual crematorium.
My business went very well. One day my little cousin by marriage, Wes Jeans actually played there one night and I was afraid to tell him or his daddy how haunted the place really was. Fearing that they was afraid of ghosts!
During his performance until 1:am or 2:am in the morning I noticed all night a strange woman who kept lurking around the restaurant. A waitress and close friend of mine Sheila Starr pointed that this woman was a wolf woman and had her eye on Wes. He was just a boy of 14 or 15 at the time.
Sheila went on to tell me she knew this woman was a wolf woman and had heard all about her since high school.
I was at a point that I did not know what to do.
I was afraid to say anything for I thought at the time how weird for someone to say a werewolf was actually in my restaurant and stalking my talented little cousin.
I watched the woman for over an hour and noted her weird look and gestures and noticed how she would walk funny in her high boots. She had very pointed teeth and strange amber eyes and kept licking her lips as Wes performed.
Closer and closer to him she gravitated as the night went on and the expressions on her face begin to alarm and frighten me to the point where I had to approach her.
I walked up to this strange woman with a little trepidation and asked her point blank.
Are you a werewolf?
And she said yes!
