REAL AFRICAN LION AND OTHER STRANGE BIG CAT SIGHTINGS IN MARSHALL, TEXAS
Story by LISA LEE HARP WAUGH
Recently an article has appeared concerning the real sightings many had in Marshall, Texas of a large african lion.
Video and photographic evidence of the lion has not yet surfaced
but many apt cryptid and Marshall, Texas lion hunters are still out looking. Though the public search has been long called off.
Phantom cats, also known as Alien Big Cats (ABCs), are large felines, such as jaguars or cougars, which have been purported to appear in regions outside their indigenous range. Sightings, tracks and predation have been reported in a number of countries and states including Britain, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Finland, Denmark, Hawaii, and Luxembourg.
As with other aspects of cryptozoology, the study of Phantom Cats is considered by mainstream science to constitute pseudoscience or fringe science.
In general, scientists reject the possibility that such mega-fauna cryptids exist, because of the improbably large numbers necessary to maintain a breeding population and because climate and food supply issues make their survival in reported habitats unlikely.
Several passengers waiting for the early morning 8 a.m. Amtrak in Marshall believed they caught a glimpse of a full grown male African lion just strolling through the tall brown grass near the old haunted depot museum.
The Marshall Amtrak station is housed in the former T&P Depot in Marshall, Texas. Amtrak, the national railroad passenger system, operates the Texas Eagle through Marshall each day, with service north to Chicago and west-southwest to Dallas, San Antonio and Los Angeles. "We came to work and there was some police activity and people moving around," said Shawn Hagerty. "One of the train passengers had a lion sighting."
"He told our gentleman that worked here at the depot that there was a lion out in the yard out there," said Hal Emmons, manager at the depot museum.
One witness was adamant, saying he was sure it was a lion.
"He said he knew a mountain lion from and African lion and he said this was a full growed African lion," said Emmons.
Police and animal control were said to promptly set out and saturated the area for documentation. In the report it was stated that some people were seen carrying large high powered rifles in case the animal had to be taken down. But there was no reports of any physical evidence that an actual lion was even in the area much less any other large cat of any type.
Locals at Oh-Connors were warned to stay inside. this many believe is the first document sighting though tales of strange big cats have circulated in the area for over 200 years.
"They were telling us to stay close to the building or just stay indoors because that possible threat really is there," said Hagerty. "As long as there is a remote possibility of something like that it does need to be checked out."
"Quite a buzz was created by that," said Emmons. "A lot of people came in wanting to see the lion or asking straight had we seen it."
The real reason I personally believe this happened is because many in Marhall have heard the old tales of the creature, or seen or heard the great wild man eating beasts roaming the area for years and wanted see the proof at last.
The article goes on to say that the eye witness account in this case said that this animal had a yellow or ocher tan color to it, and African lions do have a dusty tan color which makes them practically disappear in tall brown grass. Many who saw it believed it to be a female.
Marshall Police did confirm there were several sightings of the big cat. But, so far, there have been no reports of anyone who has lost or misplaced an African lion.
UPDATE 05/28/2010 - Thursday, the Marshall Police Department received several reports that there was a lion loose near the train depot.
Authorities searched the area, some even carrying high powered rifles in case the animal had to be taken down. Friday, authorities said they had received no new reports and they are no longer searching for the lion.
THE BIG CATS OF MARSHALL, TEXAS
Over the many year since Marshall was founded strange tales of large Cats that mysteriously appear and disappear. These local stories and texas urban legends usually refer to more exotic cats from lions, tigers and black panthers and jaguars.
Many who live in Marshall often told tales about these big cats escaping from George Forman's home because it is rumored that he owned several white tigers and other large cats over the years.
Stage Coach Road is often the actual factual location that many report sightings of these mysterious large cats. Many report that they often hear them growling in the tall brush. And have often heard strange roars in the morning. Or they report that they see them for a few seconds running in an open field.
In the 1970's a close friend of mine and partner in paranormal and cryptid research at the time, Kerry Adkisson, was the first to tell me of his personal encounter with a large real menacing full mane lion when I was a teen.
Kerry Gene Adkisson (February 3, 1960 – February 18, 1993) He waas a close personal friend and was an American professional wrestler under the ring names Kerry Von Erich, The Modern Day Warrior, and The Texas Tornado and was part of the Von Erich family of professional wrestlers.
He is best known for his time with his father's promotion World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW), where he spent eleven years of his career, and his time in World Wrestling Federation (WWF).
Adkisson held forty championships in various promotions during his career. Among other accolades, he was a five-time world champion: a four-time WCWA World Heavyweight Champion and one-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion, and a one-time WWF Intercontinental Champion.
Kerry told me that they were out one night looking for ghosts on Stage Coach Road. This hot summer night was one late night in late June. And he thought what he saw running out in front of the car was a large full grown african lion. No one else saw it but he did.
Kerry told me that in confidence because he said he did not want people thinking he was crazy because he thought he saw a real lion.
During the 1960 and early 70's many stories circulated around Marshall, Longview and Halsville, Texas. These stories were always about escaped lions from a circus train that supposedly derailed. Though no historical evidence is to be found. Stories amongst locals were told as truths being the source of why and how these out of place big cats turned up in Marshall. A few details might change in the telling of from one escaping from a train to a private party owning a full pride of lions that devoured him and escaped their backwoods compound. But always the Lions are spotted along the tracks or Hwy 20.
Local Paranormal expert Tamilia Easter Jackson remembers when Wiley college had stories going around of someone spotting a full grown Cheetah on the campus, and also the talk of a spotted leopard that roamed the grown. None of which Tamilia says she believed were true at the time. She thought it was just something the guys made up to scare the girls.
But over the years many still bring up new tales of strange displaced large cats being spotted then the general public is aware of. Most don't call the police or believe that what they saw was actually real.
British big cats, also referred to as ABCs (Alien, or Anomalous, Big Cats), phantom cats and mystery cats, are Felidae which are not native to Britain which are reported to inhabit the British countryside. These sightings are often reported as "panthers", "pumas", or "black cats". Their existence is unproven, but many suggestions exist to explain how these animals might have come to inhabit Britain, including animals released after the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 came into force, or that they are surviving Ice Age fauna.
Mountain lion attacks on people are rare, only four attacks on humans in Texas have been reported since 1980, and all were in remote areas of West Texas between 1890 and 2001.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife continues to maintain records and solicit information on mountain lion sightings and mortalities, according to a TPW pamphlet, "Mountain Lions in Texas."
If you live in an area of Marshall, Texas or a nearby city reportedly inhabited by a pride of Big Cats and strange african lions and mountain lions appearing out of nowhere, these preventative actions will really help you avoid a possible personal attack:
Install outdoor lighting in areas where you walk after dark.
Remove any vegetation a lion could hide in near children's play areas and your house.
Do not feed wildlife, including deer. Remember predators follow prey.
Keep pets under control. If pets are left outside overnight, confine them to kennels with tops.
Store all garbage securely.
Hike with others, carry pepper spray and a walking stick, and avoid early-morning, dusk and nighttime excursions.
Do not approach a lion to get a better view or picture.
If you encounter a lion:
Pick up small children to prevent them from running and triggering a rush or attack.
Stay calm, talk calmly and slowly back away while keeping eye contact with the mountain lion. Do not run or turn your back.
Do what you can to appear larger by raising your arms or waving a stick.
If the lion is aggressive, throw rocks or sticks and speak firmly and loudly.
Fight back if a lion attacks you. Lions can be driven off by fighting back. Do not play dead. Even children have successfully driven off a mountain lion by fighting back.
Report all aggressive mountain lion behavior.

Cryptozoology is the search for animals
that are rumored to exist, but for
which conclusive proof is missing.
This includes the search for living
examples of animals that are known
to have existed at one time, but are
widely considered to be extinct today.
Those who study or search for such
animals are called crypto zoologists,
while the hypothetical creatures involved
are referred to by some as "cryptids",
a term coined by John Wall in 1983.
Cryptids are legendary creatures
that are rumored or suspected to exist,
but for which conclusive proof is
still missing. Cryptids also include
Unidentified Mysterious Animals (UMA)
and species that are hard to classify.
Some are extinct animals that might
just still be alive. The most notable
Cryotids still make international
news now and then, from the el Chupacabra
to the Loch Ness monster. Their stories
and sightings still have a dramatic
effect on the public.
Sightings of exotic big cats and other strange beasts and cryptids in Texas began more than 200 years ago. "More likely than not" that there is a small to large colony of exotic big cats living in the bush near Marshall, Texas.
As close friend of mine I believed Kerry Von Erich about his lion sighting when he told it to me long ago and after reading the recent newspaer article. I now believe his story was true even more today.
