Shadow people (also known as shadow men or shadow beings) are a supernatural phenomenon in which observers report seeing a dark form at the edge of their field of vision, that disintegrates or move a wall when noticed, usually within a split second.

Reports of Shadow People are similar to purported ghost sightings, but differ in that Shadow People are not reported as having human features, wearing modern/period clothing, or attempting to communicate. Witnesses also do not report the same feelings of being in the presence of something that 'was once human'.

Some individuals have described being menaced, chased, or (more rarely) attacked by shadow people, there have also been reports of Shadow People appearing in front of witnesses, or lingering for several seconds before disappearing.

Alleged images of Shadow People have been posted on the internet, including one of a Shadow Person in a cemetery, and one in a bedroom.

Most accounts of Shadow People describe them as black humanoid silhouettes with no discernible mouths, noses, or eyes. They are generally described as lacking mass, although their specific nature varies from a two-dimensional shadow) to vaporous or distorted 3 dimensional form.

Their movement is often described as being very quick and disjointed, or they may first move slowly as if they were passing through a heavy liquid, and then rapidly "hop" to another part of a witness' surroundings. Some witnesses describe this movement as though the shadow entities they have seen "danced" from one wall to the next.

Some reports describe Shadow People as changing form. Beginning as inhuman mass (sometimes with tendrils) that becomes a child-sized humanoid, and finally a tall thin figure with an oversized head. These reports sometimes describe the mid sized form as being hooded, and the final form as wearing a hat. Some reports also include glowing red eyes.

Typically, encounters are accompanied by a feeling of dread.

Yes,
I have seen this phonenomon before in many locations,especially old homes and in areas of past trauma or extreme emotion. They were past off earlier as a glitch or twinge in my eye but became more prevalent as I became aware of them thru the years. I had been in a dead sleep one night about 2 yrs ago and was awoken by a irritating feeling. I rose up and there was a shadow person at the door of the bedroom, looking in at me, dancing back and forth as if at a ball. Startled at the appearance and thinking it a burgler;I grabbed my gun and jumped up! before I could mutter a word ; it leapt out of the doorway and into the next room, almost as if it were weightless.
After searching the whole house and staying up all that night pondering I have since come to accept these entities as real and I have since moved from the house but still see shadow people from time to time. Always alone and never in pairs or a group, they seem like lost spirits, dumb and blind, bumping their way thru this universe of ours and scaring the daylights out of people.

In the recent article on shadow people - dark, ghost-like shadowy entities- it was mentioned that this phenomenon seems to be on the rise around the world. There appear to be more sightings with greater frequency. Many readers seem to concur and have responded with their frightening, sometimes bizarre personal encounters with these strange beings. Here are their stories:

House of Shadows
I became aware of the shadows shortly after moving into my house in New Jersey. My daughters' playroom was in the basement and they were constantly complaining that they were always seeing something move out of the corners of their eyes. My youngest also said they hovered near the ceiling. In later years, I had my floral workshop in the basement and saw them constantly. It got to the point where I would talk to them with my mind, not that they ever answered back.

They were black. We saw them all over the basement, but mostly along one wall, and occasionally saw them along the same wall on the first floor and in the kitchen near the back door. We did not see them anywhere else in the house or elsewhere on the property. But even when we did not get a glimpse of them, we were aware when they were present. Some of them seemed to have an evil presence. A few years after we moved in, I told them they were not welcome in the house and the evil presence seemed to go away. Still, we had an uneasy feeling about them. Not fear. We just accepted they were there, as several steps taken over the years to make them go away didn't work anyway. Only once after the evil ones were told they were not welcome was I aware they came back. And I am not sure if they were evil or just upset. I will explain later.

Only once did it see one clearly. But it happened in a split second and I did not see it from top to bottom. I was walking through the breakfast room into the kitchen. The kitchen light was on in the corner. It was by the back door in front of the stove. I was startled. I thought someone had come into the house. It all happened very fast. But the light from behind it did not pass through as it would a shadow. It was short and stocky and appeared as a silhouette of a person. It had a head (there were no discernable features, including no eyes) shoulders, arms and a torso. It disappeared too fast to take note if it had legs or feet. I sensed it was as surprised as I was and did not intend to be seen.

Then our house caught fire. It was a major fire that started from a shorted TV along the wall of shadows in the den. We were out of the house six months while it was repaired. About a week after the fire, I stopped by right before dark to pick up a few things. As I came onto the back porch and looked through the six-foot hole where the picture window once was, I looked across the breakfast room at the basement doorway. I sensed three shadows near the doorway. It was almost dark outside, so I did not actually see them. I also got a very bad feeling about them and told them by thought that the evil ones were still not welcome in the house whether I was there or not. Then I turned and left without entering the house. I was quite rattled. Whether I had this feeling because I was also emotionally upset about the fire... I cannot say.

The next day, I went back and it seemed the house was full of shadows, although I only caught a glimpse of them, as usual, fleeing in the basement. And I am not sure I really saw them as there were no lights on down there and the only light was from the window-well windows. It was the only time I ever sensed that they tried to communicate. It seemed they were upset that we were not there because the house was all black, there was no light for them in the kitchen, and there were strangers in the house (the workers) every day. A few weeks later, burglars tried to steal the new appliances for the house. Everything was left in the kitchen by the back door. My daughters and I joked that they met up with the shadows and were scared off. Who knows? - MSF

Shadow Man on the Road
I've always been very observant and I notice everything around me in detail. When I was 13, I was riding home from the supermarket with my older brother. All of a sudden, a dark figure dove under the car. It happened very quickly, but I saw it straight on. It was definitely in the shape of a man and it seemed to appear out of nowhere. I said to my brother, "I just saw a... a... a shadow man." Of course, my brother made a joke of it. I went along with it, but it was more than a joke to me. I saw another shadow man that very night when I got out of bed to go to the bathroom. I know it was not my mind playing tricks. - Jason

Pareidolia
In most instances, witnesses report seeing Shadow People in the peripheral areas of their vision. This areas of vision is linked to the areas of the brain that recognizes patterns, however it provide less detail to the brain than Macula (Center-forward) vision. This can lead to a condition know as Pareidolia, in which the brain incorrectly interprets random patterns of light/shadow or texture as being familiar patterns[1] such as faces and human forms.

The same condition can also be observed in Macula vision in low light conditions, or when viewing a complex but random image. A common example would be perceiving a shadow, thrown by an item of furniture in a darkened room, as being a person.

Recently I've been asked a lot of questions about 'shadow people'. Imagine yourself sitting quietly and comfortably in your home. Perhaps resting in your favorite chair, with only the light of the television shining into the room, and all of a sudden something catches your eye. In the dim light you see what appears to be a person moving quickly through the room and then disappears. You ask yourself, "What was that?" Many people seeing this image write to me and ask what is it they are seeing. I wish I could tell you what you were seeing! There has been much debate over what it is these people are seeing. Some are of the opinion that shadow people are dimensional travelers. While others say they are ghosts, or aliens, or just the imagination playing tricks on someone.
No one is certain what they are. However the sightings of these shadow people do seem to correspond to one another. Most report seeing a dark figure that has no clear cut facial features. A handful have reported seeing red eyes. But on the most part they have been described as a dark figure without features clearly defined.

There are a number of people investigating shadow people. But thus far none have come up with an answer as to what or who they are. Truth is, your guess is as good as anyone's.

It doesn't seem likely they are ghosts. Ghosts generally have a misty white or vaporish appearance. Shadow people always seem to be dark or shadow-like. Many are of the opinion, because these shadow people are dark, that they may be negative energies or demons. If they are demons, which I don't happen to believe in, why would they show themselves in this manner. Is it just to frighten people or what? Others believe they are astral bodies or time travelers or interdimensional beings. An interdimensional being is a being that lives in another dimension beyond our three dimensions and their dimension runs parallel to ours. Every once and a while their dimension crosses over into ours and as a result we see the shadowy figure of a person living in a different dimension. These shadow people live and exist as vibrations only in our world - similar to the concept science is beginning to realize is probably true about the smallest particles exist as vibrations only in a quantum level and theory.

I can't tell you what shadow people are! I don't really know. I've experienced seeing something move and caught that movement out of the corner of my eye and wondered what it was. I thought I had seen a figure of a person. But couldn't be sure. But what this was, who could say. Perhaps some day investigations will tell us more - until then, if you see something - perhaps it is a shadow person or perhaps it is just a shadow.
