Local Key West legend tells that bad
things happen to cameras when people take
photos of Robert without first introducing
themselves.
October 24th, 2004 was
officially proclaimed by the Mayor of Key
West to be "Robert the Enchanted Doll
Day."
Robert The Haunted doll
was said to have been given to Gene
by a Bahamian girl whose exact relation
to the family remains
one of Robert's many mysteries.
Many believe the girl
was the daughter of ill-treated servants
of the Otto family. Speculation as to his
creation include that the doll contains
a real haunted magical crystal or was made
much like a real haunted New Orleans voodoo
doll, thereby creating his dark evil everlasting
entity.
Whatever his secret voodoo
hoodoo origins of creation, Robert is is
said to be very much more then just possessed
and his ongoing paranormal or supernatural
activities continue to be reported to us
more often then not.
Robert the very haunted
doll was the play pal stuffed toy doll of
Robert Gene Otto, an artist who lived in the
same house all his life. When Gene, as he
was called, was given the doll he was five
years old. It was the custom around 1900's
to give a small lone child a doll that looked
like them as a fill in playmate.
Also very much a
fact Robert the doll is the size of a 5 yr
old child. He has real human hair, and buttons
for eyes. Gene used to dress the doll in his
own clothes. He also gave it his first name
Robert.
Today
all alone quietly he sits, Robert, still dressed
in his white sailor's suit and clutching his
little stuffed lion.
A
museum employee once cleaned Robert and left
for the evening, locking the doors behind
him and shutting off the lights. When he arrived
the next day, several lights, including the
one near Robert's case, were on. Also, Robert
was placed differently than when the employee
last saw him. Stranger still, the bottoms
of Robert's shoes were coated in fresh dust
as though he'd been walking around the museum.
Several
employees have reported hearing a sound like
someone tapping on glass as they pass Robert's
case. When they turn, they have seen Robert's
hand pressed against the glass.

High School Students Record
Robert's Spooky History
As Robert the enchanted doll celebrates his
100th anniversary as the island's most popular
symbol of the supernatural, a Key West High
School television student is attempting to
put some of the Robert lore on videotape.
On Wednesday evening Phillip Baucom, along
with videographer Kaylee Bird and assistant
Sarah Frederick ventured into the darkened
Fort East Martello Museum to meet Robert where
he makes a home in a display case in one of
the old bastion's casemates. The students
are enrolled in Key West High School's Television
Production Course.
Fascinated by the tales of Robert and his
spectral influence on Key West, Baucom, a
junior is shooting a short video history of
Robert, which he hopes to enter in a national
student television competition in Los Angeles.
I went to the Blame It on Robert Party last
month and I thought, 'Wow! It would be great
if I could do something on Robert.' So I got
David Sloan's book (on the history of Key
West's ghost) and started a story board.
Unlike some other photographers who have tried
to make pictures and videos of Robert at the
museum have experienced mysterious camera
and film malfunctions, Baucom and his crew
were careful to show the enchanted doll proper
respect.
Before turning on the tripod-mounted video
camera, they approached Robert sitting on
a chair in his case bathed in an eerie yellow
light and politely sought his permission to
include him in their shot.
When finished, they didn't forget to offer
him their thanks. Others who failed to acknowledge
the doll's powers - including a professional
film crew-have experienced Robert's perturbation
when their film was found ruined or their
cameras failed to function properly. Although
Baucom's student video team was a little spooked
as it worked in the dark shadows of the old
fort, filming went smoothly.
Besides the footage at the East Martello,
Baucom has scheduled shots at the Key West
Cemetery and the house at 534 Eaton St., where
Robert lived for many years in the possession
of the late Robert Gene Otto, a Key West artist.
Phillip Baucom seeks Robert the Doll's permission
for a high school video project as Kaylee
Bird adjusts camera in the background.
