WHAT HAPPENS WHILE YOU SLEEP?

paranormal activity

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: REALLY CREEPY STUFF

by Alyne Pustanio

Ten years ago “The Blair Witch Project” hit movie screens and almost single-handedly set in motion the wild popularity of the current paranormal trend.  “Paranormal Activity” is a new film that follows a similar premise – found video, the isolation and psychological meltdown of the principal characters, and an evil presence that grows increasingly malevolent as the film unfolds.  But “Paranormal Activity” does one thing more:  it brings the phenomena of interest in the paranormal that produced creepfests such as MTV’s “Fear,” and highs and lows of “para-tainment” such as “Ghost Hunters and its many imitators, full circle.  “Paranormal Activity” is just the “re-set button” the trend has badly needed.

“Paranormal Activity” is the story of a young couple – Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat (the actors’ real names) – who are living together in San Diego when they begin to experience what they suspect is supernatural activity in their home.  As the movie opens, it is obvious that this activity has been going on for some time; we immediately learn this is the reason Micah has purchased a video camera and begins to film his and Katie’s every move.  At night, Micah places the camera on a tripod to film whatever might be happening while the couple sleeps.

Not unexpectedly, the night-time footage reveals some disturbing – and very creepy – activity.  This prompts the couple to seek the help of a psychic whose arrival on the scene does everything but put them – or us – at ease, especially when he admits that he is unable to help and suggests a referral to a demonologist..  About this time Katie reveals to Micah the fact that she has experienced similar hauntings from time to time since her childhood; she wonders whether the recent events may be another of these episodes.

As Katie’s fear grows, Micah’s interest in knowing more about the nature of the haunting entity overrides his better judgment.  He actively provokes the entity, at one point even bringing in an Ouija board against Katie’s angry pleas, filming all the while.  As the thumps, bumps, scratches, and shadowy manifestations escalate, Micah mistakes this as proof that his methods are producing positive results.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

paranormal activity the movie

Soon the couple finds tangible evidence that proves Katie to be the focus of the haunting - and the victim as well.  On more than one occasion the nocturnal filming shows her restlessly wandering the house and, more chilling, standing motionless for hours beside the couple’s bed.  On awakening, she has no memory of these activities.  Her strange behavior just adds to the overall tension building throughout the movie.  Also, the action takes place entirely inside the couple’s home which lends a claustrophobic feeling to the overall heavy atmosphere and makes the shocks, when they do come, more intensely frightening.

“Paranormal Activity” builds the psychological tension to a big payoff and like “Blair Witch” before it, it’s not always what you see captured on video that’s truly terrifying, but what is unseen and left to your imagination.  It’s a truly creepy exercise in atmospheric terror.

The effort to bring “Paranormal Activity” to wide release is a story in itself.  Writer-director Oren Peli shot the film for $11,000 three years ago over a week at his home.  It played a few fright festivals and came to the attention of DreamWorks where director Steven Spielberg considered buying the rights to do a remake with major name stars.  He took a copy of the movie home to watch; afterward, he found his bathroom door unexplainably locked shut.  Word is Spielberg passed on the film because he thought the DVD was haunted.

A few weeks ago, Paramount began midnight showings of “Paranormal Activity” in 16 college cities across the US.  The showings regularly sold out, which only drove word-of-mouth interest; “Paranormal Activity” became a sleeper hit.  The film grossed over $1.2 million in these limited engagements and Paramount capitalized on the buzz by urging fans to go online and “demand” a wider release.  As millions of demand requests rolled in, Paramount prepared the film for wide release and bragged that it was “the first-ever major film release decided by YOU!”  According to all reports, the film is headed for box-office gold.

Paranormal investigators and fans will recognize in Micah and Katie many of the characteristics, good and bad, of some typical paranormal enthusiasts.  Micah’s paranormal “research” consists mainly of Internet surfing and library books; as events take a troubling turn Micah does exactly the wrong thing and introduces an Ouija board.  Also familiar are his attempts at provoking the entity; this turns out to be a timely cautionary tale for anyone thinking of engaging in this dangerous activity.  Similarly, Katie’s growing apprehension and terror is familiar to anyone who has had a team member or clients break down under the sometimes tremendous psychological effects of a supernatural experience.  Together, they are a sad object lesson about why knowledge of the supernatural dangers of the paranormal is so important when working in that field.

ghost attack in paranomal activity the movie

Like “Blair Witch” before it, the faux storytelling used in the film is definitely meant to be a hook to lure people in.  Frankly, this reviewer feels that “Blair Witch” did it better and not only because it did it first.  Still, “Paranormal Activity” is a film that was needed at this time, not least because of the continued popularity of the paranormal as entertainment.

But will it scare you?  Quite definitely.  You’ll be thinking about this film for a long time whenever you turn out the lights.

Paranormal Activity is a 2007 mockumentary horror film written and directed by Oren Peli. The movie premiered at the Screamfest Film Festival in US on October 14, 2007, and was shown at the Slamdance Film Festival on January 18, 2008. The movie received a limited release in several U.S. cities on October 9, 2009 and had a nationwide release on October 16, 2009. The movie centers on a young couple, Katie and Micah, who are haunted by a supernatural presence in their home. The movie is presented in a documentary style, using footage from the camera set up by the couple to capture what is haunting them, in a similar manner to The Blair Witch Project, and The Last Broadcast.

From wikipedia

Micah, a day trader, and Katie, a student who claims that since her youth, a ghostly entity has haunted her, are a young couple "engaged to be engaged". When Katie suggests the ghost has followed her to their two-story tract house in suburban San Diego, California, Micah buys a video camera in the hopes of capturing paranormal activity on film, a project that will ultimately last three weeks. Each night, he leaves the video camera on a tripod in their bedroom to record whatever might be occurring while he and Katie sleep. He manages to document several phenomena, such as objects moving on their own, lights and televisions switching on and off, and sounds ranging from voices and growls to footsteps and loud thuds. The strange occurrences in the middle of the night soon involve Katie awakening to spend several hours standing by the bed and staring at a sleeping Micah, and going outside to sit on the backyard swing, behavior she ultimately does not remember the following morning. Katie, already irritated by Micah's making light of the situation, becomes further infuriated when Micah brings home an Ouija board. Attempting to communicate with the entity was strongly discouraged during a previous visit to their house by Dr. Fredrichs, a psychic who assessed that they are being plagued by a demon which feeds off "negative energy" and is intent on haunting Katie no matter where she goes. Dr. Fredrichs also recommended the two contact Dr. Abrams, a demonologist, and Micah's reluctance to do so leads to frequent arguments between the couple.

The activities begin to intensify. While the two are out of the house, a wind blows through the living room and the Ouija board's planchette moves on its own before a small fire erupts and extinguishes on the board. Later, inhuman footprints are left in baby powder placed on the hallway floor by Micah. In the attic, Micah finds a charred photograph - previously thought to have been destroyed completely in a house fire - of a young Katie. The next night, the bedroom door slams itself shut and is accompanied by violent knocking and banging. Dr. Abrams is abroad when Micah finally agrees to invite him, so Dr. Fredrichs agrees to make a second house call. However, Dr. Fredrichs immediately has a sense of foreboding upon entering their home, and apologetically leaves despite Katie and Micah's desperate pleas for him to stay and help.

That night, Katie is forcibly dragged out of bed and down the hallway by an invisible force. Hearing her screams, Micah gives chase and wrestles her away, and Katie emerges from the struggle with a gruesome bite mark on her back. Stressed and exhausted, the couple decide to go to a hotel room. After daytime events see a glass picture frame break and the portrait inside become scratched, and Katie gripping a crucifix so tightly that it bloodies her palm, a suddenly calm Katie insists to Micah that they instead remain at the house. That night, Katie, after once again awakening to stare at a sleeping Micah for several hours, goes down the stairs into the darkness, and begins screaming. Micah wakes up and runs to her, and the camera can only see the bedroom and dark hallway as it records the sounds of a struggle upon his arrival downstairs. Micah and Katie's screams are cut short, and brief silence is followed by the sound of heavy footsteps coming up the stairs. Unexpectedly, Micah is hurled at the camera, knocking it over. Still filming, Katie slowly crawls into view, her face demonically contorted and her clothing covered in blood. She sniffs at Micah's lifeless body, then smiles at the camera before lunging toward it as the screen cuts to black. An ending title card states that Micah's body was discovered days later by the police, and Katie's whereabouts remain unknown.

Alternate versions

The ending attached to the theatrical version of the film was suggested by Steven Spielberg.[5] The ending currently being seen in theaters for the limited screenings does not match endings previously seen in earlier screenings at Screamfest and the Burbank screening.[6][7]

The original ending, as attached to the video sent to potential distributors, has Katie returning to the bedroom, after the struggle heard downstairs, wielding a knife and having blood on her tank top. She sits next to the bed and rocks back and forth throughout the remainder of the following day. Her friend Amber arrives the next night and flees the house upon discovering Micah's body downstairs. When two police officers arrive, Katie comes out of her catatonic state and approaches them. The officers instruct her to drop the knife and shoot her after a confused Katie fails to do so. The film ends with the officers discovering the running camera. A frame from this ending has emerged online.[8] The scenes involving the broken picture frame in the theatrical version replaced a scene in the original version in which Micah determines through the video footage that the entity spelled "Diane" on the Ouija board. Searching the internet, he finds a story about a girl named Diane who, decades earlier, had experienced a haunting similar to Katie's, and then died after chewing off her own arm during a botched exorcism.[9]

Another alternate ending shows Katie returning to the bedroom with the knife and slitting her own throat in front of the camera. The version of the film with this ending was shown at only one public viewing.[5][8][9]

Production

First-time director Oren Peli had been afraid of ghosts his entire life, even fearing the movie Ghostbusters, but intended to channel that fear into something positive and productive.[10] Peli took a year to prep his own house for shooting, going so far as to repaint the walls, add furniture, put in a carpet, and build an actual stairwell. A very pleasant side effect, he joked, was ending up with a "dream home with a big TV". In this time, he also did extensive research into paranormal phenomena and demonology, stating, "We wanted to be as truthful as we could be." The reason for making the ghost in the story a demon was a result of the research pointing to the most malevolent and violent entities being "demons".[11]. The phenomena in the film takes place largely at night - the vulnerability of being asleep, Peli reasoned, tapped into a human being's most primal fear, stating, "If something is lurking in your home there's not much you can do about it."[11]

Focusing on believability and authenticity and believing that "atmosphere and a slow plot build" were more important than "over-the-top" action and gore, Peli chose to shoot the picture with a hand-held home video camera. In deciding on a more raw and stationary format (the camera was almost always sitting on a tripod or something else) and erasing the need for a camera crew, a "higher degree of plausibility" was created for the audience as they were "more invested in the story and the characters".[11] Peli says that the dialogue was "natural" because there was no real script. Instead, the actors were given outlines of the story and situations to improvise, a technique used in the making of The Blair Witch Project.[11] In casting the movie, Peli auditioned "a few hundred people" before finally meeting actress Katie Featherston and actor Micah Sloat. He originally auditioned them individually and then called them back so that they could audition together. Peli was impressed with the chemistry the actors showed saying, "If you saw the [audition] footage, you would've thought they had known each other for years."[11] Armed with a budget of $15,000 and a hand-held video camera and having no formal film training, Peli began shooting.[10]. The film was shot at the director's old house in Rancho Peñasquitos, an upscale suburb of San Diego. Peli went as far as changing the floor boards and interior design elements to fit the film's setting.[12] . The film was shot out of sequence due to the time constraints (a self-imposed 7-day shooting schedule) even though the director wanted the story to unfold for the actors as he had envisioned it. Luckily, Micah Sloat, who took most of the shots in the film between him and Katie, was a former camera man at his university's TV station. "It was a very intense week," Peli recalled, stating that the film would be shot day and night, edited at the same time, and would have the visual effects applied to it as the footage was being finalized by the actors who Peli called, "unbelievably professional and smart" throughout, adding that they surpassed being actors and became true "storytellers".[11] One week later, filming was completed.[10]

Post-production and delays

After the film was finished, Peli signed with the Creative Artists Agency. They screened the movie in 2007 at the Screamfest Horror Film Festival and, as a result, began to give away DVDs to anybody who would be willing to distribute it. It did not see a spotlight until 2007 when Miramax Films Senior Executive Jason Blum and his producing partner, Steven Schneider, viewed the movie for themselves. Working with Blum, Peli edited the film down so that it ran tighter and smoother but more problems arose: Sundance Film Festival would not accept the film and even though the Slamdance Film Festival did, no distributor picked up the movie for major distribution.[10] In 2008, the DVD ended up at DreamWorks and was viewed by Production Executive Ashley Brooks. Brooks was so impressed by the movie that she "pestered" her boss, Production Chief Adam Goodman, every day to see the film until he eventually saw it. Goodman, in turn, brought it to his boss, Studio Chief Stacey Snider. They were impressed by the film as well and handed the DVD to Steven Spielberg, who took it home to watch.[10]

Spielberg allegedly returned to DreamWorks the next day with the DVD in a "garbage bag" because he thought the DVD was "haunted". According to Spielberg, minutes after he viewed the film, his bedroom doors "locked by themselves" and he could not get out without calling in a locksmith.[10][13] Despite this, Spielberg loved the movie and helped to greenlight a remake to be produced by Jason Blum and directed by Oren Peli again. "They didn't know what to do with [the movie]," Blum stated about the remake, adding that they just wanted to be "in business" with Peli.[10] The original deal for the movie stipulated that Oren Peli would direct and that the DVD would have the original film included with it so the public would get an idea of what the original film was about. However, during contract negotiations, Blum and Peli negotiated a one-time screening into the contract to see how a real audience would react to the original film. As part of the deal, Adam Goodman invited several screenwriters to the screening so that they could get an idea about what to write and see what should be added and subtracted to the remake's script.[10]

At the screening, people began walking out - Goodman was afraid that he made the wrong decision and that the screening was a bomb until he learned (in a twist reminiscent of the famous screening of 1979's Alien) that the viewers were actually truly frightened by the film and were leaving for that reason. It was at this point that Goodman canned all thoughts of a Hollywood remake and decided to release Peli's version of the film.[10] The film was supposed to be released in 2008 but was delayed further because of the rift between DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures. While the movie was stuck in limbo, Oren Peli and Jason Blum screened the film for international buyers at a theater in Santa Monica along with a sold-out crowd mostly of teenagers. This further cemented the film's reputation and Peli and Blum sold the international rights to 52 different countries.[10] The buzz generated by this and the positive word-of-mouth finally pushed Adam Goodman (who took over as Paramount's main exec) to release the film on the fall schedule.[10]

Release

On September 25, 2009, Paramount Pictures decided to release the movie in 13 different "college towns" across the United States. On his website, director Oren Peli invited internet users to "demand" where the film went next by voting on eventful.com.[14] The release of this movie marked the first time a major motion picture studio had used the service to virally market a film.[15] The movie managed to sell out 12 of the 13 showings.[16] On September 27, 2009, The L.A. Times Blog reported that Paramount was planning on releasing the film in several other markets based on the success of the initial limited release of the film.[16] On September 28, 2009, Paramount confirmed this report by issuing a press release on Oren Peli's official website. The press release announced that the release of the film would expand to 20 other markets as of Friday, October 2, 2009. This list included large-market cities that were excluded from the initial limited release such as New York and Chicago.[17]

On October 3, 2009, it was reported that a total of 33 screenings in all 20 markets sold out and that the movie had made $500,000 domestically. A day later, Paramount Pictures announced that the film would have a full limited release in 40 markets, playing at all hours (including after-midnight showings). The full limited release of the film started on Friday, October 9, 2009.[18][19][20] On Tuesday, October 6, Paramount and Eventful.com announced that the movie would be released nationwide if the movie got 1,000,000 "demands". On Saturday, October 10 at around 1:35 a.m. Eastern Time, the counter hit over 1,000,000 requests.[21][22] Paramount Pictures then announced later in the day that the film would get a wide domestic release on Friday, October 16 and then expand to more theaters on the 23rd.[23] The film will get its UK release on 27 November 2009.[24]

Critical reception

Based on 81 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an overall approval 'certified fresh' rating from critics of 86%, with an average score of 7.2/10.[25] It also has a 68 "Generally favorable reviews" rating, with a 6.0 out of 10 user rating at Metacritic. AOL reports that viewers left the screening mid-film not because they were dissatisfied, but because the film was so frightening. The same article mentioned that the film may be rising to the same acclaim as The Blair Witch Project, filmed using the same video camera technique and because there was no real script per se.[26] Movie critics James Berardinelli and Roger Ebert each awarded it 3.5 stars out of a maximum of 4 stars.[27][28] Entertainment Weekly critic Owen Gleiberman gave Paranormal Activity an A- rating and called it "frightening...freaky and terrifying" and noted that "Paranormal Activity scrapes away 30 years of encrusted nightmare clichés."[29]

Box office performance

The film opened on September 25, 2009 to 12 theaters taking $36,146 on its opening day and $77,873 on its first weekend for an average of $6,489 per venue. It took more success when it opened to 33 theaters on October 1, 2009 doubling the box office reception, grossing $532,242 for an average of $16,129 per venue, bringing the 10-day total to $776,763.[30]

As it expanded to 160 theaters on the October 9-11 weekend, it grossed $2,659,296 on Friday having a per-theater average of $16,621. It went on to gross $7,900,695, which was $800,000 more than originally estimated. Over the weekend, the film reached (by far) the week's highest per-theater average of $49,379, coming in at #4 for the weekend, behind Couples Retreat, Zombieland, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Over the weekend of October 16, 2009, Paranormal Activity expanded to 600 more theaters, grossing $19,617,650 with $25,813 per theater average gross. On the weekend of October 23rd, Paranormal Activity rose to the number 1 spot, beating out the expected number one box office victor Saw VI, earning $22 million.

Notes and Trivia

  • In the movie, a demon would typically haunt and disturb the couple between midnight to 3am. 3am is usually considered as Devil's Hour or Witching hour.

Sequel

On 25 October 2009 was announced Paramount Pictures planned a sequel.[31]

A descendant of Portuguese and Sicilian immigrant families who trace their ancestry to European Gypsies, Alyne was exposed to the mysteries of the occult at an early age.  Two great-grandmothers were gifted and sought out mediums and another relative is a verified psychic, however, Alyne credits her mother – an avid spiritualist – with inspiring her lifelong interest in the supernatural and unexplained.  When still a schoolgirl, Alyne accompanied her mother to spiritualist meetings and panels where she met some of the early paranormal greats such as Hans Holzer, Ed and Lorraine Warren, and Jeanne Dixon.

First-hand experiences with the world of the unseen (she has lived in haunted houses and around haunted people all her life) and her own intuitive nature caused her fascination with the paranormal to grow, and for more than half her life she has been a student of the occult.  These interests, combined with her avocations in folklore and history, result in a validity and passion that is immediately obvious in all her writings.  Some of her most colorful pieces, “The Zombie Child of New Orleans” among them, owe much to the rich supernatural heritage that steeps New Orleans; others, such as her essay on “Psychic Vampires” published in Doorways Magazine, are the product of harrowing real-life experiences.  Essays such as her “Defense of Demons” are breaking new ground in the realm of paranormal investigation, changing pre-set notions and concepts about the real dangers of the supernatural realm.

Alyne has used her extensive knowledge of the occult, in particular the traditions of Western Ritual Magic, in her work as an Occult Analyst and Case Manager for groups such as Louisiana State Paranormal Research (LSPR) Society, Seekers of Unexplained Louisiana (SOUL), and New Orleans Paranormal and Occult Research Society (NOPORS).  She is also frequently called upon by individuals across the United States, victims of attacks from the realm of the unseen, for information and guidance in cases of extreme hauntings or suspected demonic activity.  In addition, Alyne coordinates the Paranormal and Unexplained track for Babel Con, a popular multi-genre convention held annually in Baton Rouge, LA; she also lectures on the paranormal and occult at Babel Con and other conventions in the South.

When she is not writing, developing material, or investigating, Alyne enjoys participating in Renaissance festivals and medieval faires throughout the South; she is the founder of her own tribe of Gypsies, “The Vitsa Hokano Baro,” which she describes as her own “living experiential discovery” of her Gyspy heritage.  A November child, she loves dark, brooding, grey days, cold weather and thunderstorms; anything to do with the British Isles, the American Civil War and New York City; reads the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Edgar Allan Poe, Christina Rosetti, and Tolkien, admires Milton, Blake and Machiavelli, and is a student of modern occult writers John Michael Greer, Michael Ford, and Dr. Joseph Liewsienski.  Her favorite holiday is Halloween, her favorite color is black and she lives in New Orleans with her teenage daughter, two dogs and several cats.

The San Francisco Ghost Society

The San Francisco Ghost Society was founded by Tommy Netzband as a small all volunteer organization, devoted to the research and investigation of the city and county of San Francisco's ghosts and paranormal occurrences. We conduct FREE, professional and discreet investigations of locations where there have been reports of paranormal activity or unexplained occurrences. Our approach is one of flexible skepticism; we seek to remain unconvinced by the end of the investigation, as opposed to embracing every speck of dust caught on camera as proof positive of a haunting. To this end we conduct extensive research about a prospective site, to understand its history, architecture, infrastructure and location. We utilize a broad spectrum of equipment and technology to record and analyze the course of the investigation. Our team members are all responsible, knowledgeable and professional individuals from the San Francisco area, who contribute their diverse interests, talents and time to each investigation.

GHOST HUNTING EQUIPMENT & GUIDE

Ghost hunting can be an expensive or inexpensive endeavor (yep, inexpensive). It all depends how much you want to spend. Investigators have shown significant results with equipment which is very affordable, so don't let pricing discourage you. Truth be told, you can document and detect ghosts and spirits with a variety of items. Of course the more you have the better, but everyone needs to start somewhere.

WHAT GREAT BOOKS ARE ON THE TOP OF EVERYONES READING LIST THIS MONTH? WELL LOOK NO FURTHER

.

How can you say ghost exist unless you try to experience it yourself? If you are not willing to try, then you have no factual basis for your conclusion. To put this another way, don't decide it before you try it. All beliefs come from a experience. Many believe people for their word, others not so trusting simply need to be shown. And still more do not believe what they see even if it shoved in their face.
