Pazuzu was an Assyrian and Babylonian demonic god of the first millennium BC. He normally has a dog-like face like here, and where his body is depicted he has a scaly torso, a snake-headed penis, the talons of a bird and usually wings. He is often regarded as an evil underworld demon, but he seems also to have played a beneficent role as a protector against disease-bearing winds (especially the west wind). He was closely associated with the demoness Lamashtu who stole babies from their mother's womb or when newly born. Pazuzu acted to counter her evil: he forced her back to the underworld. Amulets of Pazuzu like this were therefore placed in windows hung inside and out of dwellings, attached to bedroom furniture. Smaller versions were hung around the necks of pregnant women. MY ENCOUNTER WITH A REAL VOODOO HOODOO SOUL SIN EATER
BY LISA LEE HARP WAUGH
The term sin-eater refers to a person who, through ritual means, would take on by means of food and drink the sins of a deceased person, thus absolving his or her soul and allowing that person to rest in peace. In the study of folklore sin-eating is considered a form of religious magic.
This practice was said to have been practiced in parts of England and Scotland, and allegedly survived until modern times in Wales. Traditionally, it is performed by a beggar and certain villages maintained their own sin-eaters. They would be brought to the dying person's bedside, where a relative would place a crust of bread on the breast of the dying and pass a bowl of ale to him over the corpse. After praying or reciting the ritual, he would then drink and remove the bread from the breast and eat it, the act of which would remove the sin from the dying person and take it into himself.
A sin-eater is one who consumes the sins of someone who is about to die. So they may take their place in Heaven amongst the Saints.
A less known but even more remarkable functionary, whose professional services were once considered necessary to the dead, is the sin-eater. Savage tribes have been known to slaughter an animal on the grave, in the belief that it would take upon itself the sins of the dead. In the same manner, it was the province of the human scapegoat to take upon himself the moral trespasses of his client--and whatever the consequences might be in the after life--in return for a miserable fee and a scanty meal. That such a creature should be unearthed from a remote period of pagan history would be surprising enough, but to find reliable evidence of his existence in the British Isles a hundred years ago is surely very much more remarkable.
Professor Evans of the Presbyterian College, Carmarthen, actually saw a sin-eater about the year 1825, who was then living near Llanwenog, Cardiganshire. Abhorred by the superstitious villagers as a thing unclean, the sin-eater cut himself off from all social intercourse with his fellow creatures by reason of the life he had chosen; he lived as a rule in a remote place by himself, and those who chanced to meet him avoided him as they would a leper. This unfortunate was held to be the associate of evil spirits, and given to witchcraft, incantations and unholy practices; only when a death took place did they seek him out, and when his purpose was accomplished they burned the wooden bowl and platter from which he had eaten the food handed across, or placed on the corpse for his consumption.
Howlett mentions sin-eating as an old custom in Hereford, and thus describes the practice: "The corpse being taken out of the house, and laid on a bier, a loaf of bread was given to the sin-eater over the corpse, also a maga-bowl of maple, full of beer. These consumed, a fee of sixpence was given him for the consideration of his taking upon himself the sins of the deceased, who, thus freed, would not walk after death." He suggests the connection between the sin-eater and the Jewish scapegoat of the old Testament. Many believe the custom is dead but in many many parts of Louisiana and southern Texas it is still a common matter that occurs regularly. Marshall, Texas alone is home to no less then 22 adept Sin Eaters that travel the United States eating the awful and many sorted sins of those that cannot rightfully go to heaven unless their evil sins are gone.
Growing up in Marshall, Texas I went to school with a daughter of a well known local sin Eater and at the ripe age of 14 I witnessed her fathers practicing the sin Eaters trade on their grand mothers before the Mortuary hearse came to retrieve her body.
The body was laid naked on the kitchen table and all the food in the house had been prepared and set out along side and on top of this 69 year old woman's nude corpse. It was explained to me that in Texas Voodoo-Hoodoo they had a redemptive role in the religious practices of the American civilization. At the end of an individual's life, he was allowed to confess his misdeeds to this soul eater, and according to legend the soul eater would cleanse their dirty soul by "eating its filth".
A cached page of a LoveToKnow Project, a reference project based on the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica, states:
"A symbolic survival of it (sin eating) was witnessed as recently as 1893 at Market Drayton, Shropshire. After a preliminary service had been held over the coffin in the house, a woman poured out a glass of wine for each bearer and handed it to him across the coffin with a 'funeral biscuit.' In Upper Bavaria sin-eating still survives: a corpse cake is placed on the breast of the dead and then eaten by the nearest relative, while in the Balkan peninsula a small bread image of the deceased is made and eaten by the survivors of the family. The Dutch doed-koecks or 'dead-cakes', marked with the initials of the deceased, introduced into America in the 17th century, were long given to the attendants at funerals in old New York. The 'burial-cakes' which are still made in parts of rural England, for example Lincolnshire and Cumberland, are almost certainly a relic of sin-eating"
I have met many individuals in my life but actual Sin Eaters are very much more interesting then the average paranormal ghost enthusiast. And many times during the process of the actual eating of the sins it is said that the ghost of the deceased is seen and witnessed moving and crying around the room. and I will tell you this has been witnessed by many besides myself.
Voodoo-Hoodoo Sin Eaters seem to be the out cast of the group making up for 5% of the more devout individuals in the USA. Their sin eating ritual differs in many ways from those of the 19th century. It has been related to me over the years that Marie Laveau Was visited by a sin eater several years before she died. and was one of the only few individuals that had their sins eaten while still alive. This is why many say she turned pious and renounced Voodoo.
Displaced by Hurricane Katrina and Ike several of these individuals who eat their meals off of the bodies of the dead now live through out Texas. As a result many have been noticeably in the spotlight in recent months. I happened to meet the King of all the Voodoo Hoodoo sin Eaters just recently.
Known as Papa Jaxmano, a former New Orleans resident, is revered by many as the lord of all Hoodoo voodoo Sin eaters. This man has been eating sins since the age of 7 when he had to eat the sins of his father at his untimely death. Now 68 years of age he lives in Dallas, Texas, where he applies the ancient art for individuals all races, faiths and social status. He does charge a fee for his services but it depends on the amount of sins carried by the individual who has passed on.
Papa Jaxmano with his mouth full of the sins of others!
At one time he was a close friend of the Voodoo King Chickenman, and he is said to have eaten the sins of the witch Queen of New Orleans Mary Oneida Toups.
Papa Jaxmano also tells of eating sins publicly and privately. For many well known celebrities and politicians around the world.
Public ceremonies he relates often consist of laying cakes or candies in the coffin with the deceased prior to viewing of the corpse. They are then removed and given out or placed in a bowl at the door of the funeral home or the coffee room.
Relatives and friends are then told to take a candy and eat it before the corpse is buried. This custom is still widely practiced today. But many use donuts and even packets of sugar instead of candy. Many of the funeral goers are not aware that they are eating the sins of the deceased and Papa Jaxmano says this is more of sin then one might imagine. In Eexas Cupcakes, Brownies. pastries, Taco's, burrito's and even store bought can goods placed along side the body inside the coffin during the wake or funeral or often later taken home and offered to guest to eat.
"I charge no fee for what I do says Papa Jaxmano for the poor. " " I do it because... I do it." He says , " Others charge a fee all the time." " If someone is poor I might ask for a ride or just a friendly handshake." "Still there or others that you could not pay me to eat their sins."
"But sumptin very important ...." says Papa Jaxmano. "If you are the one who contacts a Sin Eater to eats someone's sins, then you need your sins ate too, or you is going to hell also!"
In the past week I have watched Papa Jax as I call him eat the sins of over 40 dead individuals. He often brings food home with him to offer to others.
In his brand of Voodoo-Hoodoo there is a group of individuals that gather each week to eat the sins of others. Papa Jax's group has over 50 member who assemble in a Dallas suburb and eat the food, or sins of the dead. These Sin Banquets or very trendy and only rarely are individuals like myself invited. When I tell you I never saw such eating going on I can only describe what I saw as frightening and paranormal.
Sin eating parties go back to first beginning in the late 1700's in New Orleans. A Voodoo Congregation would gather each Saturday night and eat the sins of others then go first thing Sunday morning Mass and go to Confession. Thus their savory sins were forgiven.
