WELCOME TO MY WORLD: SUE QUIROZ TALKS ANGELS, DEVILS, THE UNDEAD, AND ANNE RICE, TOO

By Alyne A. Pustanio
With her Halloween events, The Memnoch Resurrection Ball and UnDead Con, fast approaching, Sue Quiroz, former personal assistant to vampire author Anne Rice, took time to sit down for a few words with me.
When it comes to vampires one might not say that Sue Quiroz (Suzy Q to her friends) “wrote the book,” but she was definitely there when some of the most famous books on the subject were being written. As the former personal assistant to Anne Rice, the New Orleans author whose Vampire Chronicles re-invented the vampires of folklore into heroic and romantic icons, Sue knows a thing or two about those predatory creatures.
“It’s easy to get lost in the romance of it,” she said, as she sipped her mocha Velvet Cream, “and then there is the attraction of eternal life, living forever as an immortal. But I know that in reality vampires are killers, predators who will suck the life out of you and kill you in the blink of an eye.”
Sue’s journey into the realm of these darkly enchanting beings began over two decades ago when she read the immensely popular Interview with the Vampire, Rice’s first novel in the Chronicles and the book that introduced the seminal vampire characters so well-known to Rice fans today: Lestat, Louis, and the forever-child Claudia.

Admittedly, Sue came to the book a little late – the novel was published in 1976 and Sue first read it around 1980 – but she was “bitten,” one might say, and like the blood-drinking heroes whose triumphs and torments Rice chronicled so well, Sue knew she had to have more.
“It was my sister Melanie who gave me the second book, ‘The Vampire Lestat’,” Sue said. “After that, I never looked back. I was just in love with it.”
Sue shared her passion with a tight-knit group of friends, and together with them she said she would “constantly bother” her local book dealers whenever another book in the series was about to be released. Around the time of the release of Queen of the Damned, Sue’s devotion was ramped up a notch by a personal meeting with Anne Rice.

“We all - Sue and all her friends - went to a book signing for ‘Queen of the Damned’ being held at One Shell Square [a large building in the heart of the New Orleans business district] and we all stood in line patiently, waiting our turn,” she recalls. “Up to this point we had just talked about forming a fan club, but even then we realized we were on to something because we had literally hundreds of people interested in joining.”
As the little group approached the front of the line where Rice was busily signing books and greeting fans, Sue found herself suddenly elected the official spokesperson for everything that was being planned and when it came time for her to stand in front of the author, Sue swallowed hard and calmly asked if she would mind if the group formed a fan club. To Sue’s astonishment Anne Rice readily gave her blessing to the effort and the original Anne Rice Fan Club was born.

As time passed and the club’s membership grew (in its heyday the group had thousands of fans worldwide) Sue realized there was a growing passion among fans to gather together and celebrate the world which Rice had created – the vampires, the romance, the passion, the danger were the fuel that many say spawned the modern vampire subculture we see around us today.
Sue knew that anything she planned that centered around Rice’s vampire world would need the approval of the author and so she found herself in frequent contact with Rice. So frequent, in fact, that eventually Sue offered her services as personal assistant to Rice (whom she describes as the “original multi-tasker”) and, again to her surprise, the author accepted wholeheartedly.
Being Rice’s personal assistant opened a world of new activities to Sue. She worked in Rice’s home offices and in the offices of the infamous St. Elizabeth’s Children’s Home, where Rice assembled her vast and haunting collection of dolls; when Rice traveled, Sue was at her side, coast to coast and even overseas. “I spent 27 days in Italy with Anne,” she said.
Rice’s generosity demonstrated her real love of Quiroz and her other staff members. Once when the group was planning a trip to Paris and came up just a little short for one member, Rice stepped in and paid the way for the employee and gave them all spending money to enjoy in Paris.
During this period, when Rice’s popularity was at its height, Sue and her friends came upon the concept of a formal event, a romantic ball in the tradition of the entertainments of the vampires’ time, something that fans could feel a part of and enjoy. This was the birth of the very first Memnoch Ball.
“Everyone thinks Anne gave the parties,” Sue said, and I laugh to hear her describe an event that attracts hundreds as a “party.” “But it was the fan club that put on the very first Memnoch the Devil ball, and all the parties since then have been because of the fan club.”
Rice’s celebrity did help to distinguish the first ball somewhat. “Because of her we were able to get Kirsten Dunst to appear, wearing her ‘Claudia’ dress,” Sue explains, “and over the years the contacts I made through working with Anne have been extremely helpful in making the other parties so successful.”
Over the years Sue met and grew close with the people around Rice, in particular her husband Stan and son Christopher. She feels certain that she gained a deeper understanding of the author than might have been afforded just any employee. “Anne and I worked well together,” Sue elaborates. “I knew – everyone knew – when she was in her writing mode, you just didn’t disturb her. It really was as if she was channeling,” she adds, “and no one interrupted her while that was going on.”
Talking about how “real” Rice’s characters have become to so many fans, in particular Lestat, the master predator who became an unexpected hero as the Chronicles unfolded, Sue explains that this may be because Rice drew so much from her own personal experiences, as well as her tragedies.
“She lost her daughter,” Sue says, “and her mother was an alcoholic – all of this has been explored before, especially in Katherine Ramsland’s biography of Anne – and in her writing she was able to save them. She saved her daughter in creating Claudia, and then her mother in creating Gabrielle,” a character who appears as a mother figure to Claudia late in Interview with the Vampire.
According to Sue, she and Rice also shared a mutual vision of the nature and reality of heaven and hell. “We are both very spiritual,” Sue muses, “and both come from similar religious backgrounds [both are Roman Catholic] from which we had drifted over time.” When asked what she thought spurred Rice’s initial return to her Catholic faith in recent years Sue replies, “I think she was always going back to it. I mean, she lost it when she experienced the death of her daughter. But I think her life was just leading her back to it.”
Wondering what could explain Rice’s recent and much-talked-about break with her faith, Sue offers the explanation that “she, like a lot of us, grew tired of the inconsistency, that religion or faith says to act one way, and then the Church demonstrates something totally different. I think she was disillusioned, like we all get, with the way that certain groups are treated – like gays, for instance, and the Church’s views on abortion and the treatment of women – and it’s not how Christ would act.”
Sue believes that, at this point in her life, Rice is seeking a more “spiritually based” life, free of the fixed precepts of organized religion.
Another thing that Rice appears to have distanced herself from is something that has arguably been one of her greatest inspirations – the city of New Orleans. Sue is one of a plethora of Rice devotees who has been trying to lure the author back to the city many feel she helped define in her numerous novels. Why, I ask, is Rice avoiding returning here?
“She was so disheartened after Katrina,” Sue replies. “I mean, we all were, obviously. But she seems to feel the city will never be the same, and even though it’s making a comeback – I think, anyway – she just doesn’t want to see it the way it is now. And I don’t know if she’ll ever come back.” (Rice now lives in Rancho Mirage, California.)
Sue’s job as personal assistant to Anne Rice ended around March of 2005, before the impact of Katrina; the two remain close friends to this day. Over the years in Rice’s employ, Sue had amassed an enviable collection of autographed books, first drafts of several Rice manuscripts, signed original artwork from Rice’s late husband, the artist and poet Stan Rice, and many other keepsakes – all of which were lost to the flood waters of Katrina. Instead of disconnecting Sue from a past she loved passionately, the loss only made her more determined to go on. In fact, she received a little help from her friend: among other items, Rice replaced every signed book that Sue and her other employees had lost and a painting by Stan Rice which held tremendous sentimental value for Sue was eventually also replaced.
In addition to extreme personal challenges, the years immediately following Hurricane Katrina were tough on the Anne Rice fan base that once had thrived in New Orleans. The loss of homes and jobs forced the relocation of many people, among them many of Sue’s close friends. Knowing only that she wanted to hold on to her connection to Rice’s beloved stories and characters, Sue faced the long, uphill battle of regrouping and reclaiming that connection with vigor and determination.
“In a way, this is like the second phase of working for Anne,” Sue muses. “She’s not present, but she’s still involved, and it’s her legacy that we are preserving.”
The “we” mentioned is the – pardon the pun – “resurrected” Anne Rice Vampire Lestat Fan Club. Now as popular as ever, the fan club was invigorated with the addition of new fan bases - thanks in large part to the success of the Stephanie Myers’ “Twilight” book series and the films they spawned, and the wildly-popular HBO vampire series “True Blood” – and continues to evolve today.
“It’s significant that this year’s party is called ‘The Memnoch Resurrection Ball’,” Sue says, “because that’s really what it is – resurrecting what we had with everything new added in, making it better. It’s as if it’s all come full circle – and here we are back at the beginning of something again!”
Sue is referring to the addition this year of UnDead Con, an author- and vampire heritage-focused conference taking place concurrent with the Memnoch Ball fan club activities. Though not a paranormal convention in the strictest sense, UnDead Con does highlight supernatural and ghost-related content.
“My focus is the authors,” Sue explains. “There are so many great authors out there, and so many great stories that they are creating – I want to bring them to the attention of the fans as well as, hopefully, with the film business growing here, to the attention of producers who will see the value in their work.”
A featured UnDead Con guest is Dacre Stoker, a descendant of Bram Stoker whose classic novel Dracula single-handedly fixed the image in the world zeitgeist of vampires as dead, coffin-dwelling, European aristocrats. Sue is particularly delighted to host Dacre Stoker: “It’s sort of like keeping the line going,” she says, with obvious delight. “Bram Stoker was first, then there was Anne, and now it continues with Dacre Stoker,” a cyclic nature not unlike the rebirth of her fan club and vampire parties – the significance not lost on Sue.
“It’s very spiritual for me,” she continues. “I feel guided by spirit in everything I do. Most times I just say to myself, ‘I want to do this,’ and then I’ll figure out how I’m going to accomplish it, how I’m going to get it done. But I’m always certain that what I need will be there when I need it.”
Discussing her connection to spirit, the conversation naturally turns to things supernatural, ghostly, and unexplained.
“Well, working with Anne brought me plenty of contact with the supernatural,” Sue laughs. “There were things that happened, and places where I worked that I just really couldn’t stand being in.”
One place that Sue “just hated” was the old St. Elizabeth’s Orphan’s Home which Rice purchased with her husband Stan in the 1980’s. Rice eventually turned the home into a museum for her collection of vintage dolls; as Rice’s assistant, Sue was given office space in the building.
“There was just a creepy feeling sometimes,” Sue explains, “especially in my area and on the third floor. I know that there were sightings of children there, and also of nuns. The third floor,” she stops and rubs her arms, “I get chills just thinking about it!”
Apparently, when the building housed the orphanage, the nuns who cared for the children lived in the home with them, with some living on the third floor. Sue believes an incident involving a dying nun and a reluctant caretaker who had to take the steps to the third story day after day, growing more reluctant as time passed, has left its imprint on the third story stairs.
“Sometimes I would have to go up there, and I just couldn’t bring myself to go up those stairs,” Sue explains. “There’s such a negative feeling there. I have to wonder if the caretaker just didn’t come to hate having to take care of that nun. Going up those stairs every day and just hating it. You can just feel it as you go upstairs.”
The area around her office was also the center of apparent supernatural activity. Sue would feel unexplained drafts of air in her work area, walk through cold spots in the hallways, and have the unnerving feeling of being watched every time she prepared to leave the building for the night. I comment that Rice herself had stated that she hated to be in the building after dark, especially after her doll collection had been installed.
Sue nodded. “It even rattled her a bit,” she said.
The building has since been sold. Rice moved her doll collection to California when she left New Orleans for good in 2005; Sue has been to the West Coast to help Rice maintain the collection through a couple of other moves.
Sue seems genuinely wistful about her days in Rice’s inner circle but this only feeds her drive to keep Rice’s legacy, and indeed the whole vampire legacy, alive. Branching out with the UnDead Con, Sue hopes to reach a whole new audience; through her giant “parties,” the balls, Sue is giving back to the city that Anne Rice loved so much. Proceeds from this year’s Memnoch Resurrection Ball raffles will go to Save Our Cemeteries, an organization dear to Rice’s heart. Sue says her ultimate goal is to bring more people to New Orleans, and to keep them coming back.
“This is one of the most unique cities in America,” she says. “It still has such a European connection and feel; even now [post-Katrina] it is so much more authentic and real than other cities.”
The dualities of New Orleans, old and new living alongside each other, both helping to restore city, are reflected in the theme of the Memnoch Resurrection Ball – Angels and Devils. As Sue says, “Heaven and hell, good and evil, are constantly interacting. I have one area for Angels,” she says, “and one area for Devils and whoever wants to go in there with them,” and, in keeping with Rice’s complex view of spiritual reality, Sue will also have a “Purgatory” area.
As she has done in past years, Anne Rice will send a videotaped message to ball patrons; she will speak to them from a distance, like a detached, almost god-like observer on a world she wholly created.
If that description fits, then Sue Quiroz continues to be Rice’s messenger, as well as her personal evangelist, preserving a literary legacy that morphed into a social phenomenon that continues its own evolution, and making sure it endures to face the future.
Sue’s eyes sparkle. “I’ve got my angels guiding me.”
