The awang are the most feared of supernatural creatures on the Philippines. They can enter the body of a person and through this person they inflict harm on those the they dislike. Most common are the female variety who appear as an ugly old woman with long, unkempt hair, blood-shot eyes, long nails, and a long, black tongue. She has holes in her armpits which contain oil. This gives her power of flight.
A being of enormous power, she can transform herself into any shape, even inanimate objects.
She always preys on children, pregnant women, and ill people. Once she has overpowered a victim, she will take a bundle of sticks, talahib grass, and rice or banana stalks, and transform these into a replica of her victim.
This replica is sent home while she takes the real person back with her. Upon reaching its home, the replica will become sick and die. The victim will then be killed and eaten. She is said to be particularly fond of the human liver.
The aswang is mostly a very nasty being with a unstoppable appetite for human flesh. And this does not matter if it is living or actually dead. the creatures ghosts is thought to be more deadly the living beast.
This dark vampire-like ghost creature is the subject of a wide variety of myths and stories around the world, the details of which vary greatly, depending on who tells them and where in the world you are.
BY Andrea Chincuanco
It seems every person of Philippine decent has a very different vampire tale to tell. And especially about the feared creatures feeding and habits. Aswangs are said to live amongst us in the actual guise of normal humans by day. The creature could be the very sexy pretty girl you meet on the street or the young girl you are possibly dating or engaged to. Many of these creatures use the day time hours to seek out their victims and learn of them and their habits and of their heritage. Aswangs it is believed love to kill off family lines of those that have killed their kind in the past.
The aswangs dating habits make it easier to kill it's prey at it's leisure. And with a vengeance from beyond the grave. Many Aswangs date only during the daytime hours telling their suitors that their parents or their jobs keeps them from going out or away all night long.
But much more deadly and frightening then a living Aswang is that of it's real ghost! Many families in the islands, the United States and Europe will tell of how their family has been haunted and cursed by these spirits or ghosts of evil and dark powers over the living.
If someone in your families past has killed an aswang outright then as legend goes you are for ever cursed that all of your female descendents will die at child birth or become an aswang at puberty.
In the America's tales of children disappearing in the night only to be found the next day hanging from trees by their guts with all their their flesh removed date back to early Philippine settlements in the New World.
Many Filipino Americans reside mainly in the continental United States and form significant populations in Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, and Northern Mariana's.
The earliest recorded presence of Filipinos in what is today the United States occurred in October 1587, when mariners under Spanish command landed in Moro Bay, California. The earliest permanent Filipino Americans to arrive in the New World landed in 1763, later creating settlements such as Saint Ma lo, Louisiana and Manila Village in Barratries Bay. These early settlements were composed of formerly pressed sailors escaping from the arduous duties aboard Spanish galleons and were "discovered" in America in 1883 by a Harper's Weekly journalist.
Significant immigration to the United States began with the need for agricultural laborers in the 1900s, with Filipinos settling primarily in what was then the Territory of Hawaii and California, after the Philippine-American War, which turned the Philippines into a territory of the United States. This immigration would slow to a trickle during the 1930s due to multiple factors, including the United States' recognition of independence of the Philippines on July 4, 1946. Filipino immigration to the United States would not see a resurgence until the late 1960s. Of the immigrants who arrived after the late 1960s, most settled in California, while others found a new home around U.S. Navy bases, major metropolitan areas, the West, and to a lesser extent the South. Some came looking for political freedom, but most arrived looking for employment and a better life for their families.
Saint Ma lo was a small fishing village that existed in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana on the shore of Lake Borg ne from the mid 18th century into the early 20th century, when it was destroyed by the New Orleans Hurricane of 1915. It was the first settlement of Filipinos in the United States and quite possibly the first of any Asian people in the United States. And of course with them came the tales of the night beast. The actual last trace of the Manila Village was wiped out by Hurricane "Betsy" a Category 4 hurricane of the 1965 Atlantic hurricane season which caused enormous damage in the Bahamas, Florida, and Louisiana. Betsy made its most intense landfall near the mouth of the Mississippi River, causing significant flooding of the waters of Lake Pontchartrain into New Orleans. As it is mistakenly known as first hurricane to cause over a billion dollars in damage (1965 dollars, not adjusted for inflation), it earned the nickname "Billion-Dollar Betsy".". But this only as many believed in the area caused the aswang and their ghosts that haunted the settlement to move north to New Orleans.
The Saint Ma lo settlement was established in 1763 by Filipinos who deserted from Spanish ships during the Manila Galleon Trade. Reasons for their desertion from the ships varied; however their desire to escape the Spanish brutalities is generally regarded as the main reason.
They settled in the marshlands of Louisiana where no Spaniards could reach them. The people who settled in the bayous were called Manila men and later on as Tag alas. They governed themselves and kept their existence a secret from mainstream society for over a hundred years. But with them also hid the tales of the deadly night creatures.
It wasn't until journalist Lafcadio Hearn published an article in Harper's Weekly in 1883 that their existence was finally exposed to the American people. Hearn's article is the first known written article about the Filipinos in the United States.
Rarely did women live in the village. In fact there were no women in the village during Hearn's visit. Those fishermen who did have families had them live in New Orleans or in other localities. The reason for this can be attributed to the isolated and harsh conditions of the settlement. Others believed it was because some of these men lived under the curse of the aswang and feared to pass it on to their descendents
Since there were no Filipino women, the Manila men often courted and married Cajun women, Indians, and others. This they believed would stop the curse from being passed on to their daughters. for many believe that an aswang will only attack those of full Philippine blood.
Louisiana was not the only place where Filipinos jumped ship. Others deserted and found homes in various parts of Mexico where many assimilated easily (e.g. marrying Mexicans) because of their fluency in Spanish. Many today actually will tell you that the chupacabra is really an aswang. The reason it attacks goats or chickens and not humans is often related to the fact that some aswangs are still part human and fear being destroyed. Others will tell you it is because they cannot find true 100% Philippine blood to devour. the cross between the blood is thought to be so diluted over the years that such Aswangs or chupacabra's have become dumb ed down to a large degree and are more animalistic in nature. Or so it was actually related to me by those I question.
Many tales that have been related to me by Philippine aswang victims in america tell of how the creatures have damned them for all times and that many of them are the last of their families lines.
In Houston, Texas on a visit to meet with Lisa Lee Harp Waugh she introduced me to a family who believe that the ghost of an aswang has haunted them for over 5 generations. The creature they believed had taken or killed at birth every female child born to them. They told me that they only had sons surviving, but most of them as I was told all lived tragic lives. The only survivors they told me were the woman who married into the families
The stories they told me ranged from babies being born with organs on the outsides of their bodies or being born with full sets of teeth. And what they believed was that these evil incarnate children had they survived would have grown into full bodied living creatures. No matter if you believe this or not that was what I was told.
In the old tales it was related to me that such ghosts of aswangs often hide in a woman's womb waiting for impregnation. But these poor woman or often of Philippine and Mexican decent. In questioning Lisa Lee Harp Waugh, she told me that many who she had spoken to in researching womb ghost often were of these lines. And that there are from what she was told many cures and reasons as to why such ghost attack these poor unfortunate souls.
It is believed by many who tell the tales of these creatures that the Aswang is more deadlier when it is dead. The revenge and horrid atrocities that the creatures ghost can cause after it's body is wholly destroyed is much much worse then when it was considered alive.
Womb ghosts are not always aswangs living or laying in wait in ones body, but those from the islands are aware of the difference. A real pregnancy with aswang brings these woman to have great strange cravings for the blood of fresh meat. Many will often find themselves killing their own chickens and pets to get it to feed the creature inside them. Marie (not her real name) a young Mexican Filipino from Dickinson, Texas told me how her mother related to her about the disappearance of several peoples pets in the neighborhood.
Maria's mother believed that some poor girl had a aswang inside her and that was the reason the dogs cats and birds in the area were being found skinned alive and or drained of blood. Her mother also told her she thought this was why pet and livestock mutilations were on the rise and occurred in Texas and around the world. This she believes is that an evil chupacabra aswang thing was at work. They are also said to like to eat small children. Their favorite body parts are always the liver and heart, but they often eat eyes first, and they are known to be viscera suckers.
True are not these old aswang superstitions seem to live on in tales and fears of those who believe it to be truth.
California aswangs have been spoken about in secret over the years. Many Philippine's in the area believe that once a aswang, Tik-tik or Manananggal or killed it's ghost usually looks for a new body to inhabit. and instead of looking for a woman's body to take they inhabit men. that is because they do not want to die in body again until they can gather back all their strength that was lost at their executions.
These ghost usually attack young men giving them a desire to drink the blood of of small animals and insects. The aswang always as it is believed and told possess those young boys that are only children. the creature will survive in them for many years until it must devour human flesh.
In California I once met the Perez family. The grandmother Olive Conchetta Gonzales told me that her beliefs were that those that go out and kill people for no reason and skin their victims and drink blood are often those possessed by such ghosts.
This might in their personal beliefs explain the Vampire killers of today. Being those that kill and gorge on the organs and blood of their victims.
She told me that she thought that the aswang drove their victims crazy very slowly, and made them do things that were truly 100% inhuman. From having unnatural sex with the corpse to skinning their victims and wearing it as clothes.
These aswang halflings as she called them are only possessed by the aswangs ghosts and do not become a full fledged aswang until after death. And that is only if they so chose to do so. But that is only if they are a woman and they then are real aswangs. Male aswangs are thought to be easier to kill because they are only possessed by such ghosts. Once the aswang killer is dead the aswang ghost looks for another man to possess or a womb to live in until it can be reborn.
The old tales tell of great aswangs that all come from a grand mother that still roams the world today. And the she only possess men.
Mrs. Gonzales believes that the ghosts of an aswang might explain Richard Trenton Chase the vampire killer of Sacramento, or Jeffrey Dahmer and the likes. She even believes that Charlie Manson is possessed by such a demon.
If you look real close at his eyes she told me you can see how they sparkle with the life and evil insanity of an aswang. " She said this to me in all seriousness and I wondered did this old lady really know what she was talking about."
Aswangs Ghosts ~ The Legends and the Myths:
Aswangs ghosts only haunt people's family lines and descendents Thus they decide to taunt and cause evil to descend on the line of a man who kills one.
Aswang ghosts are thought to only possess men and often hide or live in the wombs of woman waiting to be reborn.
Aswang ghosts can never be destroyed or banished. If an aswang decides it is time to leave a living person they will seek out a new host to taunt or live inside of.
Aswangs ghosts drive people to do deeds and murders of great proportions and often those that make the daily news.
Aswangs ghosts are always invisible except to the person they stalk.
Aswang ghosts many believe cannot be researched or investigated unless you want it to stalk you to your own death.
Aswangs ghosts cannot be detected by using ghost hunting equipment. Or so I was actually told by a group of friends in Manila "The real Ghost Chaser Of Manila). These ghosts of the Aswang creatures are thought to be so powerful with the supernatural and paranormal they defy all known methods.
Aswang ghosts need only human or animal blood to survive while living in it's hosts mouth belly, stomach or intestines or womb. Pregnant woman and possessed people will seek to only eat raw blood filled meat and small animals.
Aswangs ghosts can possess Dogs, Cats and other wild animals.
Aswangs ghosts especially always like to kill or eat young men. They all have cannibal like qualities they also love to devour human sperm mixed with the victims blood. Many are thought to bite off the penis's and testicles and eat it whole of their lovers during sex. Only then after do they suck out their bowls and organs through the opening. Aswang ghosts will bite out a woman's vagina doing the same devouring all organs through it.
Aswangs ghosts are said to like eating human eyes of some of their victims. they also like to gorge on tongues and noses. Many believe this is what is being found at cattle sheep and pet mutilations.
Aswang Behaviour
An aswang is a regular towns person by day and prefer an occupation related to meat, such as butchery.
Aswangs have an ageless appearance and a quiet, shy and elusive manner.
They can be distinguished from humans by bloodshot eyes from staying up all night looking for opportunities to sneak into houses where funeral wakes are being held, and stealing the dead bodies.
According to the elderly, the aswang can also transform from human to animal and animal to human.
Supposedly if a person looks at them in the eyes, the reflection would appear inverted. During their nocturnal activities, they walk with their feet facing backwards.
One type of aswang is named tik-tik which transforms into a huge bird at night and prowls. The tik-tik looks for a sleeping person,or,in some cases, pregnant woman. Then extends a very long proboscis into the unsuspecting victim and proceeds to suck the blood. While performing, a 'tik-tik' sound is heard.
Some stories tell about the tik-tik as an aswang's familiar, said to confuse people by it's 'tik-tik' sound. If the aswang is near, the sound would be faint so that people hearing it would think that the aswang is still far away.
In the town of Capiz, Panitan, another type of aswang is believed to exist, which they refer to as the Dangga or Agitot. This type of aswang is typically funny because some say it is a handsome gay man that hunts women during the night and eats fresh blood like a vampire. But its existence cannot be properly supported by evidence.
Another familiar is thesigbin or Zegben. Some say that this is another form that the aswang transforms into and yet some say it is the companion of the tik-tik. It appears to be similar to the chupacabra and Tasmanian devil in appearance with the exception of spotty fur. It supposedly has a wide mouth with large fangs.
It is said that an Aswang can be revealed, with the use of a bottle of a special oil made from coconut and mixed with certain plant stems upon which special prayers were said. When an Aswang comes near or walks outside the house at night, the oil is supposed to boil and continue boiling until the aswang leaves the area. They are also said to abhor garlic.

Ang Darling Kong Aswang is a 2009 Philippine film. It's almost like a Filipino version of Twilight already, but with a touch of comedy. In this movie, the Aswangs can fly, have fangs, and have tremendous strength just like Vampires. Leading lady Cristine Reyes resembles the mysterious character of Robert Pattinson. And then there's Aswang clan wars.

Eliza is the kind of aswang who is reluctant in eating human flesh. When Joaquin, a wicked aswang pressures her into marrying him or she and her mother Ida will face tragic consequences, Eliza escapes to the city where a widower named Victor lives. Victor keeps his distance from women, focusing only his two daughters, but this changes when he meets Eliza. They eventually become sweethearts. Eliza also tells Victor about her true identity, but this does not stop Victor from marrying her. Their bliss, however, is short-lived as Joaquin has captured Ida, forcing Eliza to leave Victor to save her mother. But Victor discovers something about himself, which could help bring Eliza back to him.
The team-up of Vic Sotto and Cristine Reyes is a great come-on. They have a strong chemistry on screen which sends the audience tickled pink every time they have a scene together. There is also the tried and tested direction of Tony V. Reyes who handled all Vic’s MMFF entries. What is impressive about their team is that they try to come up with a better project each year. They take it as a challenge to surpass the success of their last offering. “Ang Darling Kong Aswang” is considered a great visual and technical marvel. Aside from Vic Sotto and Cristine Reyes, the cast is composed of: Jean Garcia, Agot Isidro, Dante Rivero, Allan K, Rochie D’ Horsie, Rafael Rosell, Denise Laurel, Jackie Rice, Empress Mosang, Shalala, Joey de Leon, Jackie Woo, Oyo Sotto and Pia Guanio in a special appearance.

Far more than a book that contains a number of frightening true accounts and a collection of truly magnificent original art, Real Vampires, Night Stalkers and Creatures from the Darksideexpands the definition of the vampire to include parasitic entities that enter our reality from the far reaches of the multidimensional universe to possess their victims and to feed upon their life essence and their very soul.
Real Vampires are not the undead, returning from crypt or cemetery plot to steal blood, the vital fluid of existence from the living. Although they may look like us—and when it serves their purpose they may skillfully impersonate us in order to deceive and to prey upon us—they have never been human.
Real vampires are parasitic, shapeshifting entities that feed upon the energy, the life force, and the souls of humans.
From whatever dimension of time and space they may have originated, real vampires may be compared to an ancient, insidious virus that first infects, then controls its host body, causing it, in turn, to possess other victims, to form secret societies, blood cults, and hideous rituals of human sacrifice.
Regardless of the seductive aura of the vampire depicted in contemporary novels, films, and television series, none of these romantic transformations of an ancient menace to humankind portray real vampires. While the vampiric virus may infest handsome men and beautiful women, none of those infected have superhuman powers. Real vampires and those whom they possess are loathsome slashers, rippers, and murderers who do not promise immortality with their sensual “bite,” only a painful death.
Real vampires and their human hosts can walk freely in the light of day. The rays of the rising sun do not send them scurrying back to their coffins. Crucifixes do not cause real vampires to shrink back in fear.
Real vampires are the spawn of ancient entities such as Lilith, the seductive fallen angel, or of other paraphysical beings—such as the Jinn, the Cacodaemons, the Raskshasas, and the Nephilim—who have traversed the boundaries of time and space to prey upon humankind.
While this book focuses on the supernatural, the multidimensional, and the paraphysical beings who have interacted with our species since prehistoric times, we also visit the contemporary vampire community living among us today. Leading members of the vampire community share with us the basic findings and the extensive demographics of the Vampire and Energy Workers Research Survey for 2009. These "vampires" are not murderers, sociopaths, or supernatural beings. They are a subgroup within our society who are perhaps unique, but who are not after our blood.
Real vampires are immortal, and when the spirit parasite that has invaded a human body has tired of that fleshly residence, it dispassionately discards its temporarydwelling and possesses another, abandoning its former host to death and decay, rather than to an existence of attractive eternal youth and everlasting sexual prowess.
Although these entities cannot be killed, they can be driven away from their potential victims. We can resist them. We can become immune to their power. We can fight them and defeat them.

How can you say ghost exist unless you try to experience it yourself? If you are not willing to try, then you have no factual basis for your conclusion. To put this another way, don't decide it before you try it. All beliefs come from a experience. Many believe people for their word, others not so trusting simply need to be shown. And still more do not believe what they see even if it shoved in their face.
