THE TELLING OF THE HORRIBLE HAUNTED STORY OF THE LIVING DEAD GIRL OF JEFFERSON, TEXAS
BY TAMILIA EASTER JACKSON
In Jefferson, Texas there was always a gruesome if not horrid story I heard as a child growing up about what many would relate to what you would call the "REAL" "Living Dead Girl".
To this day those that live in Jefferson will not talk of the the living dead girl. They will tell you that they do not know the story or it is a real Texas haunted myth. The reasons to why might just be that they don't want to be haunted by her wandering ghosts itself. They really believe or tell in these parts that her haunting is so terrifying no one has lived after seeing her. But many locals know of the real person who witnessed her apparition. That's because they were found with their bodies torn apart and chewed on.
And you know what we say in these parts of Texas?
"If someone refuses to tell you a story or tells you it's a outright lie, then you know it must be true!"
Many people from surrounding Counties often over the many years like to go to Jefferson, Texas. And that is just to ask the locals About Sadie Mae, and of course watch to see the reactions and how they might squirm their way out of telling the old Texas Tale. If someone dares to break the imposed silence bad tings just might happen to them. Or that's what many know that the local superstitions state.
The Story Of The Real Living Dead Girl
This young girl of 9 yrs at the time, that many call by the name of Sadie Mae was in a horrible accident sometimes in the early 1900's or late 1800's.
In telling the Texas tale, many will state to you she suffered a great head injury from a heavy wagon over turning on her fragile young body and crushing her head. It supposedly took over 4 hours to free her from the spot where she lay pinned. Some tell in these parts that she came out of the terrible accident without a single scratch but never really awoke from the coma she was put in. Though she was able to walk she did not show any signs of acknowledgment to those that tried to converse with her.
Accounts from those in these parts who will freely tell the story often state that Sadie Mae would just stand there with pale dead glaring eyes looking right thru you. And that is with her one green eye and the other brown or pitch black and filled with blood. Many accounts tell that if you looked her in the dead eye as they called it you would not be alive come Sunday. Or worse you would disappear one day and never return.
A close friend of mine Judy, told me that the old tales she heard growing up. They tell of how her parents were bring her out and parade her up and down Jefferson Street begging for people to look upon her and offer what help they could offer. Almost everyone in town and as far as neighboring counties knew of her awful plight.
Often you might here of her stories and of how her grieving parents would chain her to their porch just to get some sun for she was very pale they chained her only because so that she would not wonder off. No matter if any of this is true are not it really paints a strange picture of Texas life at that time. One story I found relates how her mother walked her on a long leash. Poor Sadie Mae would trail her stumbling along as they went.
Stories begin to circulate that a small new born puppy that was given to her to hold by her father. This was in his way hoping that some recognition would come to her and his dear child would regain her wits. But the story I heard from my grand mother was it was torn to shreds and she bit off it's new born head and ate it in front of him in under a minute flat.
Many tales of her have surfaced stating that she attacked passerby's especially young children and the elderly that past their front yard and that's why they chained her up tight. Of course this is the late 1800's and no one thought twice about such a thing especially if the person was mentally incompetent and the family was poor. People just took care of their own back then and if this was the cure to control a special case like Sadie Mae then no one questioned it outright.
One strange tale tells how she got loose one day and wandered away. The family searched alerting the whole town going door to door asking for help to find her. But this was to no avail.
The very next day at noon people in town were horrified to find her walking into town and nude. She stoped in the middle of the street standing on Jefferson Street covered with a large amount of what appeared to be blood. But no one ever found out who's blood it was.
In time tales of missing animals and new born children being stolen in the night began to surface but no one could prove that Sadie Mae was the cause. But suspicions rose and talk of her midnight escapes were often talked about in hushed tones.
Many times Sadie Mae would find away of freeing herself from the heavy chains that held her. Each time the local blacksmith would come and re-do them enforcing them stronger and stronger with ever visit.
But as the story goes, to no avail.
Then one day she was gone!
The ever fearing family searched the town, then each near by city and wood, but she did not turn up.
They posted a crude drawing of her in each town and would go to the local authorities and Sunday Church meetings and call special town hall meetings with the Mayors and notables of each. Always begging for someone to tell them something of the lost living dead child.
Feared lost forever her family finally gave up 10 years and six months later, ending the search and fearing she was finally really dead. But that's how one tale ends.
Another tells that 12 long years went by and no one knew what ever really happened to her.
Her family either died or kept searching the great Lone Star State.
Some tell in the stories they heard that they just packed up and moved away. Others tell that they went as far as New Orleans and even to Mexico searching for her day and night.
But still some locals might dare and tell you she came back and murdered them in their sleep. But as the research on this story goes no one really knows for sure or they just won't tell.
By the mention of Sadie Mae's name in Jefferson and nearby counties I have seen people's faces turn pale and their mouths go dry. They will often deny knowing of such a sorted ghost story or out right refuse to talk of it.
On one hot August day a traveling show came through town toting what they called the real zombie child. And alas poor Sadie Mae had finally found her way back home to Jefferson.
The towns folks say they recognized her straight off. She was much older then from when they last seen her, but still the same old Sadie Mae that they knew with one blood filled eye. But no one would come forward to identify her. Not the Sheriff or the Mayor would utter a word even thought they knew it was her. All fearing they would have to take charge of her knowing her family was gone.
Though Sadie Mae never showed expression or moods of any type, the many locals who were said to have witnessed her untimely return believed she knew that they had shunned her openly. And as all tall Texas ghost and haunted tales and the story goes, she escaped her tiny filthy cage one night soon after leaving Jefferson somewhere near Dallas.

Days after the sideshow left town the bad news came bring a dark cloud over the city. A man came asking if anyone had seen the escaped living dead girl.
And that when people of Jefferson became really frightened and began to lock their doors pen the livestock and keep their children close.
In the days that followed news of horses, goats and cows being attacked in the night. Or too often locals in the early morning light would awaken to their dead livestock ripped to sheds chewed upon and strung like Christmas decorations upon their front doors and steps.
The talk in the town was soon that Sadie Mae had returned to exact her vengeance on them that shunned her! the Mayor is said to have found his prized dogs strung up like Thanksgiving turkeys, Dead! And they were hanging from his roof top by their intestines.
The sheriffs wife reported to others in town that her chickens were all dead with the heads chewed off and void of blood. But the strange thing was that they were all still sitting on their perches and some were still nesting on eggs.
And still to this day many say her ghost are her actual body still walks down the center of town haunting the places where those brave souls still fear to go.
Many sightings and strange stories of Sadie Mae haunt Jefferson, Texas. And many will tell you no one will comment on her even those that know of her sad tale. Though the things she did were not those of an actual dead thing haunting the city it still was frightening enough to scare all that knew her.
Most often some locals and historians will tell you it is completely totally untrue. A hoax to scare even the bravest of men. But this is believed to be because they fear she will haunt them day and night because she will have no rest until judgment day.
Of course those that will tell you it is something that a deranged Texan woman made up just to scare her children and husband and make them stay home at night.
But many believe people keep hushed about her for they fear that she seeks revenge on the descendents of the people that might have stolen her from her Jefferson, Texas family home. One old story that many believe to be true is that she was kidnapped and sold as a human oddity by the local folks. Another related story tells that a doctor stole her away one night to experiment on her and try to reverse her condition. But as we know of any good haunted story the real truth always lays buried in myth and legend.
A often told tale is that the locals felt really creeped out by this living dead girl and it was they that spirited the poor child away from her family to lock her up in a girls home or one for the insane. Many who live in Jefferson know too well that this vengeful walking dead girl is said to haunt those that mock her until they go insane.
A tale often told in Jefferson is that if you stand at any truly real haunted location and call out very loudly her name she will come to you. People have reported hearing her rattling chains in the distance. And others claim that she has actually been seen still walking dressed in tattered rags. No one will tell you if it is her ghosts or a zombie for to many run before she can get close.
Then if nothing happens it is believed the actual location your standing at is not haunted by any type of ghost or ghouls, and it is suggested you move on to the next and try again.
