Watertown,
NY- A Real Ghost Story

I never gave much thought to the paranormal
or other worldly beings until one winter evening
in upstate New York. I lived in a modest home
in Watertown, NY with my then husband and our
five month old baby boy. It was a cozy home,
about 24 years old, and located in a nice neighborhood
on a fairly busy residential street. I had recently
left the Army to be a full time mom while my
husband remained in the service. We had many
dreams of living the traditional military family
life and looked forward to many years ahead.
One evening, my husband was attending a military
function. I was at home with our baby. It was
late and I decided to cozy up on the couch,
watch T.V., listen for the baby and wait for
my husband. I loved being in the warm family
room with a burning fire to heat the room.
I became very drowsy and turned the television
off then drifted off to sleep on the couch,
knowing my husband would be home soon. At some
point a noise awakened me; I'm not sure what
it was - something like a swoosh or loud whisper.
I opened my eyes thinking it was my husband
trying to wake me and get me to go to bed.
When I opened my eyes I could see the reflection
of the dancing flames on the walls and ceiling,
but it was freezing
in the room. It was so cold I wanted to get
up and poke the fire to get it going some more.
As I tried to get up I felt
something like a cold breeze or a cold something
surround me. But I couldn't get up. I felt my
shoulders pressed
down into the couch and when I tried to get
up again I was being held down so firmly that
even swinging my feet down as a counterweight
didn't help to move me upright.
Scared and confused I stopped and closed my
eyes, then opened them to try again. The fire
was still going, but it
was freezing still and once more I couldn't
get up as it felt like I was being shoulder-pinned
to the couch.
I closed my eyes and said - "Go Away!!!"
I felt a tug on my shoulder and the cold breeze
again. Then it was
gone and the fire began to warm the room. I
sat up and wrapped myself with the blanket,
wide-eyed and shaking. Not
too long after this, my husband returned.
I hesitated to tell him about this, thinking
he'd think I was nuts. But months later as we
were preparing to move I
related the story to him. He didn't have much
reaction at the time.
After we relocated from that area, he brought
it up one day. He told me that after hearing
that story he didn't
want to scare me anymore so he held off telling
me what happened in that house until we were
gone. He had learned
some of the house's history from our neighbor,
a wonderful older gentleman who had deep roots
in the
neighborhood and community.
Apparently a young couple lived in the house
before we did and they had been there for some
time. For some reason the wife committed suicide
in the home and it was not a scene anyone would
have relished seeing. He did not want to tell
me about any details as they were too gruesome
to hear about.
That's all I know about the place....I would
love to learn more about it, about her, about
the circumstances. It
would give me a sense of closure. Having experienced
this, what I believe to be a haunting, I want
to know more about it so I can better come to
terms with this experience. I've often thought
that perhaps it was her spirit. Was
she angry that there was another woman (me)
in her home? Was she angry about a new baby
in her home? I've also
been told by a priest that usually a cold feeling
in the room combined with restraining types
of feelings are caused
by demonic entities.
I don't know which it is....and maybe I shouldn't
know. But it is curious and has me wondering
if a spirit in
that house actually did visit me - and why.....
