Skeptoid: Critical Analysis of Pop Phenomena is a weekly pro-science, anti-pseudoscience podcast. It was born in October, 2006 to help fight the good fight against the overwhelming majority of noise in the media supporting useless alternative medicine systems, psychics preying upon the vulnerable, the erosion of science education in the classroom, xenophobia of advanced energy and food production methods, and generally anything that distracts attention and public funding from scientific advancement.
The following review represents the views of the author Reap Sow. The opinions are those of the author alone and do not represent the views of any other party or this web site. Unless the party is a surprise party with some cake and ice cream. In that case the author reserves the right to have some cake and alittle ice cream because he hasn't had dinner yet and doesn't want to spoil his appetite.
Skeptoid. Don't let the name fool you or turn you away.
Skeptic is a word which is given a bad definition by many in the paranormal community. I would like to see that change. With some help from a man named Brian Dunning along with some help from people who are truly 'open minded' I think that can happen.
Brian Dunning does a podcast called Skeptoid. easy now,we are keeping an open mind, remember that.....
We are all skeptical about some things, that is a fact we should all be able to agree on. If you disagree then I would suggest you look up the true definition of the word....
Brian Dunning is the host and producer of the podcast Skeptoid: Critical Analysis of Pop Phenomena (skeptoid.com), applying critical thinking to paranormal and pseudoscientific subjects promoted by the mass media. Skeptoid has a weekly audience of 107,300 listeners. Brian is also the author of two books based on the podcast, Skeptoid and Skeptoid II. A Silicon Valley computer scientist by trade, Brian now uses new media to promote critical thinking. He has appeared on numerous radio shows and television documentaries.
What Brian does is to offer some insight and information into some of the things everyone may be skeptical about.
Covering everything from urban myths, homeopathy, paranormal, general scams, and just plain scientific phenomena, the podcast really has something for everyone who isn't a gullible fool.
I like to think most people are not fools and Brian does too.
The podcasts are short, averaging about 15 minutes each .The host uses his wit and research to share with you what he has learned about the topic at hand.
Even if you do not agree with everything Brian says, I can assure you that you will come away with new things to think about and/or consider.
Skeptoid does not attack any point of view, it considers things, and gives you a chance to do the same for yourself.
Is Skeptiod always correct? No. The host himself has admitted to being wrong on occasion. This, to me, shows what a skeptical podcast should be about, realizing no one is correct all the time, admitting it, and working to find the correct information so we can move on.
If you really have an open mind then you will give Skeptoid a listen....trust me.
Believers and skeptics alike can get something from Brian Dunning and his Skeptoid podcasts. For that reason it earns my highest rating of 4 skulls. I can honestly assure you after you listen, skeptic will not seem like such a bad word after all.......
Reapsow first emerged into the paranormal in 2007, when he stepped in to defend a friend who was being attacked by the late Paranormal Police. This is where his gift to write, along with his ability to bring stupidity to the surface with a comedic flare, that he began to build a name for himself. He stood up for those being unjustly crucified, and spoke his mind, and people liked this new insight into the community. People quickly learned that Reap had a way of capturing your attention that no one had ever done before. People had begun to flock to his blogs, and his popularity grew in the community. This opened up the door to Reapsowradio which had begun to air in October of 2007.
As he learned more about the paranormal, and the community he found himself questioning some of the methods and theories that were being used, by what were considered big name investigators. Using common sense, as well as reading up thoroughly on some of the claims that were being made, he found himself speaking out against those that he felt were doing more harm then good in paranormal investigations.
