Ghosts in general as we know come in all shapes sizes forms and encounters. Dominate ghosts tend to be those that we experience first hand more often. Weaker entities tend to be those that do not bother anyone. Alpha Ghosts are the stuff that legendary hauntings are truly made of.
The status of the alpha is sometimes achieved by means of superior paranormal awareness and a sense of supernatural prowess. The ghost or spirit in the alpha position usually changes when another challenges its selected place of haunting. For many see us as trespassing into their realm. Alpha ghosts are more aware of us as we are of them. When invading an Alpha ghosts home or haunted location they will often fight to show us they are in control . Consequently, alpha ghost s may have to fight other ghosts in their own group several times to maintain their position as head of a particular haunting.
Many movies over the years have played the good ghost over the bad ghosts. Even Casper had his problems. But it makes you wonder are ghosts just hanging around haunting us just to get a laugh or two of how much they scare us. Or is it just the rules of the afterlife that we do not fully understand or really comprehend.
In any given living species where the fight is to the death, alphas rarely reach old age. In some species, a nomadic individual may approach the alpha, successfully beat him, and thus become the new alpha. When this occurs in lions, the new alpha usually kills the previous alpha's cubs. In lions, several individuals may share alpha privileges in what is known as a coalition.
Might the same apply to the dead?
The social group usually follows the alpha to the hunt and to new breeding or resting grounds. The alpha is thus sometimes seen as deciding the fate of the group. If two groups of the same species find themselves competing for the same ground, they may let the alphas fight letting the outcome decide which group stays. The same as many are starting to document seems to apply to the dead also.
We all know that ghosts roam the earth but not necessarily alone. Groups, gangs and even family units of ghosts have been haunting locations, and individuals for many centuries. And until recent documentation by several leading authorities the act of them forming actual groups or gangs was never explored before.
The term "alpha male" is sometimes applied to human beings to refer to a man who is powerful or in a high social position, similar to hegemonic masculinity. Alpha ghost seems to apply to the role or leader of a haunted location. It is also used to explain the conduct of several adolescent spooks and specters that compete openly to call more attention, often being hostile and irreverent amongst themselves and towards the living. This is especially true if the paranormal investigator or ghost hunter represent authority. It is sometimes supposed that this conduct originates from the son wanting to be the alpha of his family, group or clan.
In some actual paranormal investigation cases, the hierarchy is extended to include two other roles: beta and omega. The beta (usually beta ghosts) is the contender to the alpha position, and usually subordinate to the individual in it after passing a test. Betas act as the second in command and can overthrow the alpha or future alpha through reiterated challenges.
Poltergeist are considered Alpha Ghosts as is those unseen forces that boarder on demonic encounters and possessions.
Territorial ghosts defend areas in the same form or fashion that actual animals might that contain a nest, den or mating site and sufficient food resources for themselves and their young.
Paranormal Defense rarely takes the form of overt fights: more usually there is a highly noticeable display, which may be visual, such as seeing a real apparition or photographing a strange form. Paranormal, auditory (as in much coveted EVP's and strange sounds or olfactory, through the deposit of strange odors and intense scent marks.
Many territorial mammals and even ghosts use scent-marking to signal the boundaries of their territories; the marks may be deposited by urination, by defecation, or by rubbing parts of the bodies that bear specialized scent glands against the substrate. For example, dogs and other canids scent-mark by urination and defecation, while cats scent-mark by rubbing their faces and flanks against objects. Many prosimians use territorial marking; for example, the Red-bellied Lemur creates territories for groups of two to ten individuals in the rainforests of eastern Madagascar by scent marking: the male Diademed Sifaka also scent marks defended territories in some of these same rainforests. The male Western fence lizard defends a territory by posturing and combat, but less intensely after the mating season.
Ghosts may haunt a location using it's favorite odor. A cologne the spell of a pipe or flowers. They also have been known to smell like urine, feces or even decaying flesh.
Real Haunted Territories and paranormal haunted locations may be held by an individual, a mated pair, or a group. Territoriality is not a fixed property of all ghosts. We must realize that not all ghosts are just locked to a single location. Many are free to travel the world at their leisure. It might be choice or some personal reason that specific ghosts will haunt a location for a hundred years or longer.
Territoriality is only shown by a minority of ghosts. More commonly, an individual or a group of ghosts will have an area that it habitually uses but does not necessarily defend; this is called its haunted home range. The home ranges of different groups often overlap, and in the overlap areas the groups will tend to avoid each other rather than seeking to expel each other. Within the home range there may be a core area that no other individual group uses, but again this is as a result of avoidance rather than defense.
Behavioral ecologists have argued that paranormal energy distribution determines whether a species will be territorial or not. Territoriality will emerge where there is a focused resource that provides enough for the individual or group, within a boundary that is small enough to be defended without the expenditure of too much effort.
