The True Belief In Real Ghosts!
According to a survey conducted in October 2009 -1010 by HAUNTED AMERICA TOURS, hauntedamericatours.com 73 percent of of those that visited their web site out of 199,849,930 visitors in one years time say they believe in the existence ghosts. Many very often refer to a original Gallup poll conducted in 2005 that showed that one-third (32%) of Americans believe that ghosts exist.
Having carefully surveyed their visitors the sites open poll also shows that more people believe in haunted locations such as real haunted houses, Cemeteries, and real haunted dolls than any of the other paranormal items tested, with people from around the world telling us thus that believing that this is the truth that real haunting's and paranormal haunting's and items do exist.
If there are such a thing as ghosts then many wonder what is the best proof or evidence that they do exist. EVPs, Video, ghost Photos, or Paranormal encounters of the Third kind?
A paranormal encounter of the first kind is usually denoted to ghost stories, urban legends of such. Haunted house tales of supposed haunting's and encounters with evil or vengeful ghosts or often the subject. Actual deceased individuals appearing in dreams or seeing shadows out of the corner of your eye can fall into this category also.
A paranormal encounter of the second kind is usually unverifiable proof such as ghost appearing as a mist or clearly in your family photos or recreational pictures. These are actual reported as real ghost photos that show anomalous images captured in photos, video or actual EVPs. These ghosts can show up as clear images of faces and or body parts. they also might appear as a vague mist or orb. the phenomena may also cause a distortion of a living persons face or surroundings.
Paranormal encounters of the third kind are denoted as actual physical encounters where an unseen ghost or entity actually physically effects you by touching you or causing a PK experience to occur around you. Sexual encounters with ghosts fall into this category

The Top Ten Best Ways Of Researching And collecting Real Paranormal Evidence
We all start our ghost search in a real Haunted Houses: By us venturing inside the most intriguing haunted houses in America. Or seek out the ghosts of the long dead on one of America's Most Haunted Battlefields or Cemeteries.
Or you could start just by taking a ghost tour or reading all about it here now!
The never ending search for the most haunted places on earth or the top ten scariest places on earth continues. What is the reason for such an internet web search? People looking for thrills and chills to conquer the boredom of everyday life. Or the search to test ones own limits and level of fears that they might bring. Or, are these places so haunted and scary because we deem them so?
The Best EVP evidence to prove you are haunted many believe is what you might personally capture in your own endeavors. Parapsychologist Konstantin Raudive, who popularized the idea, described EVP as typically brief, usually the length of a word or short phrase. Whether others believe it or not it is truly yours to understand and hold as your own personal proof that a haunting or a paranormal communication has been given to you directly. And also categorized as digital and analog audio recording: the purpose to capture any unexplained noises and electronic voice phenomena (EVPs), that may be interpreted as disembodied voices speaking to us.
Electronic voice phenomena (EVP) are electronically generated noises that resemble speech, but are not the result of intentional voice recordings or renderings. Paranormal investigator John Zaffis claims, "There's been a boom in ghost hunting ever since the Internet took off." Investigators, equipped with electronic gear—like EMF meters, video cameras, and audio recorders—scour reportedly haunted venues, trying to uncover visual and audio evidence of ghosts. Many use portable recording devices in an attempt to capture real ghost speech known as an EVP.
Common sources of EVP include static, stray radio transmissions, and background noise. Some have claimed these sounds are of paranormal origin, while there are natural explanations such as apophenia (finding significance in insignificant phenomena), auditory pareidolia (interpreting random sounds as voices in their own language), equipment artifacts, or simple hoaxes.
Recordings of EVP are often created from background sound by increasing the gain (i.e. sensitivity) of the recording equipment.
If you so choose to believe that the strange garbled voice on a digital or even video is that of a ghost then nothing can persuade you to think otherwise.
Coast To Coast AM hosts George Noory and Art Bell have explored the topic of EVP with featured guests such as Brendan Cook and Barbara McBeath of the Ghost Investigators Society, and paranormal investigator and the late demonologist Lou Gentile. Gentile demonologist and radio host often called the King of EVP's passed away June 28, 2009.

Electronic Voice Phenomena
I am ghost hunter, a paranormal investigator I live in Dunkirk, New York, I have been a EVP investigator for four years, and what I plan to do with the info recorded voices of ghosts I have gathered is to share it with people. I work with two other wonderfully dedicated investigates on the team, Kenny Narducci, and Tim Carrow, both paranormal researchers dedicated to finding new technology to enhance and better understand EVP's.
The name of our group is Ghost Searchers Society. We are an organization dedicated to the research and development of electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) and Instrumental TransCommunication (ITC), and other paranormal research. Our goal is to help people contact loved ones that have passed on through the EVP process by continually experimenting and developing advanced techniques for the recording of EVP. We are interested in how the EVP recordings work and what can be done to improve the clarity of such recordings.
On our journey of all that goes bump in the dark of night and the light of day... We are prepared for anything to happen as we explore the world of ghosts, haunting's, and the spine tingling proof offered in EVP (electronic voice phenomena). Contacting the Dead in the Electronic Age. Forget about Ouija boards, séances and spiritual mediums. The way to communicate with the dead in the 21st century is through electronics. No one can deny that computers and electronics have revolutionized life on this planet. And so to it has to Ghost Hunting.
How I personally got started in researching EVP's is when my mom passed away. I wanted to know more about life after death... So one night I was listening to Coast to Coast with Art Bell and he had Barbara McBeath from The Ghost Investigators Society G I.S. with their recordings new selection of actual recorded voices of ghosts, EVP's, so I figured I would give it a try. And as they say, "The rest is Voices from the Other Side Paranormal History."

Many believe that certain locations around the world or more active with paranormal activity then others
Chicago Paranormal Nights, a popular way to experience real reported haunted locations
Haunted historic locations in the Chicago land area and at times out of state have become a popular way for individuals to explore and experience haunted locations. Edward Shanahan who is a Psychic Reader and Spirit Feeler and has been written about in four paranormal books with two as recent as 2009.
Shanahan has been providing such experiences in the Chicago land area since 2004 and the locations are Historic Locations. The paranormal locations include a mansion, a past IL Senator's home, a location said to be once owned by Al Capone and other historic locations are joining the line-up of haunted places in 2010.
Many of the paranormal nights include tours by Historians from locations, Shanahan leading individuals through the locations and providing what he feels with his abilities at the haunted locations.
The locations have been documented by Paranormal Investigators in the past and even one location that Shanahan was written about in a book about, TV's Paranormal Cops even confirmed many of the things Shanahan wrote about in the past on his web site or was included in one of the books.
Also joining Shanahan at the locations is a paranormal investigation team, either Prairie State Paranormal or the Latin American Paranormal Society.

3. Viewing What Many Believe To Be Real Ghost Photos And Judging For Yourself!
To date no one has brought forth a photo that the paranormal community inclusively has deemed as a real 100% photographic proof that ghosts exist.
What deems a photo of a ghost as being real? Is it because something that you photographed was not visible when the photo was taken?
Many dispute such proof as camera malfunctions or dirt or smudges on a lens. Camera straps, bugs, reflections and even cigerette smoke or the mist of a persons breath can cause such to happen.
Many discredit orbs as just dust and dander reflecting the light of a flash. At other times often clothing fiber or cell particles of pollen or moisture.

Collect and document actual Ambient temperature measurement of a supposed haunted location: using thermographic cameras, thermal imaging cameras, infrared thermometers, and other infrared temperature sensors. though ir shows anomalous happenings it is not a 100% toll in expalining away a real ghost or haunting.
More research into this area is very much needed.
6. Séance's And Necromancy
We all should investigate real Necromantic rituals such as a Séance or age old ancient spells and rituals designed to call up the dead to either appear or interact with the living. These dark practices as many call them or often employed by many in secret. and most paranormal investigations begin because someone has called up a dead person or demonic force that haunts them.
From the use of Ouija Boards, Franks Box knock offs, To actual speaking to a discarnate voice in the dark that answers you back. These time old practices still need to be investigated.
Many a teen has been frightened out of their wits by having a séance in a dark room. Many by the use of a Ouija board have complained about pesky ghosts attacking them after their Board told them it would happen.
7. MORE INDEPTH INVESTIGATIONS OF MEDIUMS, WITCHES, SPIRIT CHANNELERS NECROMANCERS AND PSYCHICS
Many of these individuals bring messages from the dead to the living. Documenting the contacts that a person of this type has and recording and researching their ghost contact skills can in many cases leave a praranormal investigator with more questions then answers. But to what the paranormal comunity's state is today the research into finding real people who possess ESP and communications with ghosts seems to be on the top of everyones list.
But the problem is more testing of individuals needs to be done in a more scientific atmostphere. thought the Goverment has done secret studies on everything from Telepethy to Remote viewing many today tennd to disbelieve the ramblings of those indtividuals that truly believe they have the power to communicate openly and directly with the spirits of the dead.
THERE IS A PUBLIC PARANORMAL COMMUNITY CALL FOR MORE AND BETTER OPEN POLICY TESTING AND RESULTS NEEDING TO BE GIVEN TO THE PUBLIC SO THAT THEY CAN DECIDE IF WHAT PROOF THEESE INDVIDUALS BRING FORTH IS REAL OR NOT!
8. Read Paranormal books and research ghosts to the maximum to understand and really know what your looking for.
Coast to Coast AM is a late-night syndicated radio talk show which deals with a variety of topics, but usually ones that relate to the paranormal. It was created by Art Bell, airs seven nights a week 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Pacific Time, and is distributed by Premiere Radio Networks. It is currently hosted by George Noory weekdays and Art Bell (broadcasting from Manila in the Philippines) on the weekends.
Coast to Coast mostly emphasizes very unusual topics, and is full of personal stories related by callers. While program content varies, most nights are focused towards the paranormal, and subjects such as the occult, remote viewing, hauntings, shadow people, psychic predictions, conspiracy theories, UFOs, crop circles, cryptozoology and science fiction literature, among other paranormal topics. Since the terrorist attacks carried out in the United States on September 11, 2001, the events of that day (as well as conspiracy theories surrounding them) and current U.S. counter-terrorism strategy have also become frequent themes. However, more conventional topics are sometimes discussed, with interviews with notable authors and political talk sometimes featured.
After the theme song is played (Giorgio Moroder's The Chase from Midnight Express), the broadcast is typically kicked off with a reading of current events or news stories by the host, with callers weighing in if time permits. This is usually followed by a lengthy interview with the evening's guest, or hours of open phone lines. Occasionally, roundtable discussions are held on one of the show's common topics. Since Art Bell has resumed weekend hosting from the Philippines, he has focused on scientific topics.
During hours of "open phone lines", calls are taken and put on air without any screening, at least according to original host Art Bell. More recently, under George Noory, open lines have added topics for callers to share their experiences or stories about a particular issue or situation. The show has multiple call-in numbers, of which there are always at least five (as of 2005): for "east of the Rockies", "west of the Rockies", first-time callers, "international callers" and finally a "wild card" line. They are all announced at the beginning of each broadcast by Ross Mitchell. The shows opening, which is now famous, had been spoofed on the now defunct nationally-syndicated Phil Hendrie Show, with Hendrie imitating Mitchell's trademark deep voice and repeating his one phone number for all four lines. On special occasions, Coast to Coast AM rolls out more numbers, including lines that are reserved for special "themed" callers, for example those who claim to be from other dimensions, time periods, and those possessed by spirits.
The Halloween edition of Coast to Coast becomes Ghost to Ghost, as listeners call in with their ghost stories. The New Year's Eve show usually entails listeners calling in their predictions for the coming year, and the host (commonly Art Bell) rating the predictions made a year earlier.
Coast to Coast was created by veteran broadcaster Art Bell in the mid 1980s. Originally called West Coast AM, it aired on Las Vegas, Nevada radio station KDWN 720. Bell hosted the program each weeknight from 1:00 AM to 5:00 AM Pacific Time, live from the KDWN studios in the Plaza Hotel in downtown Las Vegas. In addition to his show, Bell did radio commercials and other voiceover work for the station.
Bell's program was syndicated in 1990 as Coast to Coast AM and began airing on more stations. For a while it still kept the 1:00 AM starting time, but then moved to 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM and then to the present 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM schedule to better serve other time zones. Soon, Bell hosted the program every weeknight and Sundays from his residence in the town of Pahrump, located in Nye County, Nevada (often referred to on the program as The Kingdom of Nye). Bell is a skilled interviewer, drawing out his callers' improbable stories with a poker-faced but confidence-inspiring, "Oh, really?" He has retired and returned to the show many times since 1998; the first "retirement" lasted two weeks, and was brought on by alleged threats against his family. Art Bell's first successor as host of Coast to Coast was Mike Siegel.
In 2001, Siegel stepped down as host due to pressure from Premiere Radio Networks and Bell, as ratings and affiliates fell sharply during his tenure. Bell then returned to weekday hosting duties, only to depart again the following year due to chronic back pain. He was replaced by frequent guest-host George Noory, and the weekday program officially became Coast to Coast AM with George Noory by the end of 2002.
Bell made another comeback in 2003, this time replacing Barbara Simpson and Ian Punnett on the weekend broadcasts. Then in June 2005, he announced that he would be reducing his role to just two Sundays a month to leave more time for traveling with his wife. He also disclosed that Ian Punnett and Hilly Rose would take over the new vacancies. Previously, Rose had been a frequent guest-host of the program, and Punnett had regularly hosted Sunday evening broadcasts years ago. However, following the passing of his wife, Ramona Bell, on January 5, 2006, Art decided to return to the air on Saturdays and Sundays, stating in an emotion-filled broadcast on Sunday, January 22, 2006], that he needed to keep busy. On April 8, 2006, concluding several weeks of mourning, Art Bell, 60, married 21 year old Airyn Ruiz, a resident of the Philippines whom he came to know through internet "dating." Art relocated to the Philippines and resumed hosting the show as of June 15, 2006, but has had difficulties with an ISDN line and hosts weekends as technology permits. Otherwise, George Noory substitute hosts the Sunday versions or a tape is played of a previous show. Saturdays are guest hosted when Bell is unavailable. On Saturday from 9 pm to 1 am Eastern Time, Punnett hosts Coast to Coast Live, a spin-off of the original Coast to Coast AM, covering similar topics. He occasionally hosts the regular Saturday edition of Coast to Coast as well, making an eight hour shift.
George Noory remains host of the weeknight editions. He broadcasts from, alternately, Los Angeles, California and St. Louis, Missouri, and has had a continually positive effect on the program's ratings. He is consistently nonjudgmental in his reponses to callers' comments, seemingly accepting at face value the credibility of their reported experience. He has promised listeners that he will "stick around" to host the show through 2012; his wish is to report on whatever might occur in relation to the many predictions of the world ending (or at least changing significantly) that year, as purportedly anticipated by the Mayan calendar, alleged bible code, and a number of spiritualist and other fantasy writers, prognosticators, predictors, shamen, the witch doctorate, and assorted prophets. Recently, Noory retracted that statement and now says that he will stay until he is "dragged out."
Dreamland was another Art Bell creation, nearly identical to Coast-to-Coast AM but less caller driven. Bell hosted Dreamland on early Sunday evenings, until he relinquished control of the show to Whitley Strieber. It continued to precede Coast-to-Coast AM on most affiliate stations on Sunday nights but moved to Saturday night (after Premiere Radio began to syndicate Matt Drudge) and then dropped the program entirely. It is now heard over the Internet exclusively.
Dreamland continues to focus on many of the same topics as its sister program, although often with a more spiritual point-of-view, as well as an increased emphasis on extra-terrestrials.
The name Dreamland was, in fact, at one time a radio call sign for the control tower at the The Air Force's Operating Location Near Groom Lake, Nevada, as described by the government in legal documents, but more commonly known as Area 51.
Other Coast To Coast AM greats To Listen for:
Ian Punnett has been exploring the night regularly on Coast to Coast AM since 1998. Punnett is what many call the shinning the star of the program. Witty and fun to listen to. In fact, if Coast to Coast were a branch of the military, Ian would be a veteran reservist having served alongside every Coast to Coast host in the show's history. For years, even while performing his own daily talk show and attending seminary, Ian hosted Sunday night's "Coast to Coast AM with Ian Punnett" until leaving for a new talk radio project in the Twin Cities and making way for George Noory.
George Knapp is a 14-time Emmy Award-winning journalist whose reporting on Nevada’s infamous Area 51 military base was selected by UPI as Best Individual Achievement by a Reporter (1989). Other awards include the Associated Press’s Mark Twain Award for news writing and the Edward R. Murrow Award for Investigative Reporting. George is an anchor and reporter for the CBS affiliate KLAS-TV in Las Vegas and he also writes a weekly column for a Las Vegas newspaper.
Additionally, George hosts Coast to Coast AM on the third and fourth Sundays of the month.
The radio show publishes a newsletter for subscribers called After Dark. It discusses matters covered on the show in greater detail.
Ghost Hunters is an American paranormal reality television series that premiered on October 6, 2004 on Syfy (previously the Sci Fi Channel). The program features paranormal investigators Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson who investigate places that are reported to be haunted. The two originally worked as plumbers for Roto-Rooter as a day job while investigating locations at night. Since the show's success, the series now takes precedence in their lives, but they are still honorary employees with the company and continue to do jobs for them if time permits.
The show should not be confused with the original 1996 Inca Productions show Ghosthunters produced for the Discovery Channel. The format was sold to Pilgrim Films & Television in the United States to become Ghost Hunters. The only link between the two shows is presenter Ian Cashmore who anchored the UK/Europe show. Cashmore piloted the U.S. show, but chose not to remain part of the U.S. venture after he filmed the promos.
Ghost Hunters has attracted various critics and skeptics, such as Joe Nickell of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, Skeptical Inquirer author Lynne Kelly,James Randi, and Benjamin Radford. The Skeptical Analysis of the Paranormal Society (SAPS) was founded with the intent to recreate and debunk segments of the show.
Critics point to a lack of scientific methodology and critical examination in their investigations as well as questionable production aspects involving editing, action that is rarely captured on tape, and findings that are unsupported by evidence. Tools are used in ways that are not proven effective, or in ways in which they have been proven ineffective, such as infrared thermometers that are claimed to detect cold spots in the middle of rooms when such tools are able only to measure the surface temperature of objects unless equipped with a probe accessory. The show has been seen using a probe attached to the infrared thermometer that would then give the temperature of both the surface it is pointed at and the area around the probe. Techniques with thermal imaging cameras, Geiger counters, electronic voice phenomenon, and EMF detectors are used with little or no explanation as to how the techniques have proven to provide evidence of ghosts or other entities. Concerns that the devices are misused are common, with Benjamin Radford noting an article for CSI, "you may own the world's most sophisticated thermometer, but if you are using it as a barometer, your measurements are worthless. Just as using a calculator doesn't make you a mathematician, using a scientific instrument doesn't make you a scientist.
Ghost Hunters International A spin-off series which premiered Wednesday, January 9, 2008 and has featured investigators Robb Demarest, and Barry Fitzgerald (who appeared in the summer 2007 Ireland episodes of Ghost Hunters) since the onset along with other rotating members from the TAPS family.
The format is similar to Ghost Hunters but features investigations in various locations around the world. The team has included former Ghost Hunters investigators Andy Andrews, Brian Harnois, Shannon Sylvia, Donna LaCroix, Dustin Pari, and Joe Chin.
Ghost Hunters Academy
Ghost Hunters Academy On October 23, 2008, TV Guide reported that Syfy will launch a spin-off of the show called Ghost Hunters: College Edition, which will feature co-eds in the ghost hunter roles. The name was later revealed to be Ghost Hunters Academy and began airing November 11, 2009. The series features Steve Gonsalves and Dave Tango leading a group of college students through various ghost-hunting investigations.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium, located in Louisville, Kentucky, opened in 1910 as a two-story hospital to accommodate 40 to 50 tuberculosis patients. It has since come to be considered one of the most haunted buildings in the Eastern United States.
In the early 20th century, Jefferson County was severely stricken with an outbreak of tuberculosis. The original Waverly Hills building was soon home to over 140 patients. A larger hospital was needed for the overwhelming number of patients coming in, so construction of a five-story building that could hold more than 400 patients began in March 1924. The new building opened on October 17, 1926, and was eventually closed in June 1961. The building was reopened in 1962 as Woodhaven Geriatrics Hospital; Woodhaven was closed in 1981 due to patient abuse.
Story by Jackie Pitt
In March of 1996, Robert Alberhasky bought Waverly Hills and the surrounding area. Alberhasky's Christ the Redeemer Foundation Inc. had plans to construct the world's tallest statue of Jesus on the Waverly site, along with an arts and worship center. The statue, which was inspired by the famed Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, would have been designed by local sculptor Ed Hamilton and architect Jasper Ward. The statue would have rested on the roof of the sanatorium.
The first phase, coming in at a cost of $4,000,000, would be a statue of Jesus 150-foot tall and 150-foot wide. The second phase would convert the old sanatorium into a chapel, theater, and a gift shop at a cost of $8,000,000 or more.
The plan to construct this religious icon fell through because donations to the project fell well short of expectations. In a period of a year, only $3,000 was raised towards the effort despite efforts to pool money from across the nation. As a result, the project was cancelled in December of 1997.
As a result, Alberhasky abandoned the Waverly Hills property. In order to recoup some of the costs of purchasing the property and then some, Alberhasky attempted to have the property condemned so that it could be torn down and redeveloped. That notion was denied by the county, and Alberhasky then attempted to undermine the structural foundations of the building by bulldozing around the southern perimeter in order to receive insurance money.
After Alberhasky's efforts failed, Waverly Hills was sold to current owners Tina and Charlie Mattingly in 2001. Charlie's father, who died in 2005, worked as an orderly at Waverly Hills for approximately four years. The Mattinglys currently hold tours of Waverly Hills and convert the building into a haunted house attraction each Halloween. Proceeds go toward the renovation of the property.
Room 502
Haunting
Room 502 is perhaps the most notable location in Waverly Hills and the number has sometimes been adopted symbolically. One story claims that a nurse hanged herself after finding she was pregnant out of wedlock and attempting surgery upon herself to abort the illegitimate child. Another tells a different nurse who jumped from a balcony. However, the SciFi Channel series Ghost Hunters turned up no records or death certificates to confirm the legends, although there is confirmation of the nurse's suicide by hanging and her discovery in official records. Some sources claim there is also confirmation of the second death, but it is currently disputed. Other common sightings in Waverly Hills include the vista of young children running through the halls, as the hospital had a large number of children and families housed there.
Apparitions & Other Strange Events
The most common experience of visitors seems to be "moving shadows" or "shadow people". These are shadows that appear to have some substance - able to "walk" across doorways and, demonstrated in the Sci-Fi Channel special Spooked, able to block some light when a laser is pointed at them. There are many reports of these shadows both inside and outside the building.
Glowing Orbs (nicknamed "Soul Orbs" by some) have also been photographed there. These small balls of light appear almost like lightbulbs or specks of dust when captured on film, but there has been no electric power to the building in years. They are often reported to fly around corridors and spawn other orbs.
Some photos show indistinct "brown imps" outside the grounds too, but these humanoid shapes are a less common sighting. The existing photographic evidence of the imps is dubious to say the least.
There have been many Electronic_voice_phenomenon recordings made in the building and grounds. Varying from the more common "Get out" or "Go away" to more specific statments like "What kind of hospital is this?" and "The winch" (referring to the winch that powered the Death Tunnel's body card, and recorded in that area). The makers of the movie Death Tunnel (and the documentary Spooked) recorded many such voices and sounds while filming.
Ghosts
Often a boy bouncing a ball is seen and at least one small, old, leather ball has been found in the building. Investigators once found a ball rolling towards them, and it being moved by an unseen force. Electronic_voice_phenomenon recordings feature a child saying "I am three". There have been numerous sightings and recordings of small children.
Another notable vision is the sight of a woman - reports vary as to the age and appearance - bearing chains around bloodied wrists chanting or screaming "Help me!" at the entrance of the building.
The most common apparition though is of a young girl with no eyes which has appeared on photos and been encountered by witnesses. This girl is called "Mary" by staff and researchers, based on a recovered photo of a young woman that was recovered and was signed "Love, Mary Lee". However, the girl in the photo is older than most reports of the ghosts percieved age. Mary is the most conversational of the ghosts and has spoken to many people, usually wanting to play games with them.
Also of note is the "death tunnel" or "body chute" which was first constructed to move supplies to the building during the cold winters. Because of the increasing number of daily deaths from the horrible disease, the staff also transported dead bodies in the tunnel to the bottom of the hill on which the sanatorium was built. They believed this would help keep up the morale of the patients by not allowing them to see the hearses picking up the deceased. At the height of epidemic, there were as many as seven to ten deaths each day. At one point in time, it was reported that as many as three per hour died there, but there is no independant confirmation of that figure.
The Death Tunnel! This tunnel has to be the most famous tunnel up at Waverly Hills. It has been a major subject of discussion among people who have been to visit Waverly on tours during October. For some reason...this tunnel has come to be called " the body chute." Actually however, this is an incorrect term...because a chute is a slide. Bodies of deceased patients were never slid down this tunnel and piled up at the bottom in heaps - a popular misconception that alot of people have come to have about this tunnel.
In reality, this tunnel was originally a steam tunnel that supplied the sanatorium with hot steam for the radiators. Yes, the boiler room was at one time at the very bottom of the hill because of the black smoke produced by the coal fed boilers. The tunnel was also a good way for employees to get up and down the hill during the winter time and keep warm at the same time. Transporting the bodies of deceased tuberculosis patients was only ONE of the uses of the tunnel. During the peak years of tuberculosis there were a lot of deaths at the sanatorium, and the staff realized that it would be very discouraging for patients to look out the windows and see hearses pulling up and taking away people who had died. Try to imagine yourself being administered to the sanatorium with a diagnosis of having TB. It is the late 1920's, and antibiotics have not been invented yet. So, you realize that you have a chance to get cured and live, but...you could die too if the treatments they gave you didn't work well enough. Now, imagine how discouraged you would feel if you looked out from your assigned room, and when you pull the curtains back...you see people who have died being picked up with a hearse. And to make matters worse...you see that perhaps many times throughout a day. It would be so emotionally depressing to you that you might give up the fight to live. Then ....your bodies defenses dwindle. It is a known fact that if a person gets very depressed emotionally....it can affect their bodies defense system to the point that it may not fight off a disease as well as if the person is in good spirits. So, that is the reason why the staff at Waverly would sneak the bodies down through this tunnel!
Estimates vary wildly of how many died at Waverly, though the owners of the building say that it was around 63,000. This estimate would be consistent with other TB hosptitals, considering Waverly's size.
Do not enter the property if you are not scheduled for a tour or during other times without consent of the owners.
