Alhambra Cemetery

Alhambra Cemetery Also known as: Pioneer Cemetery.

California Cemetery Ghost Photos by Sean Mallett

Are the walls around a Haunted Cemetery to keep the living out or to keep the dead in?

A friend of mine told me about a old local cemetery in Martinez, Ca. Alhambra Cemetery Martinez, Contra Costa County, California. The Alhambra Cemetery, or Pioneer Cemetery has suffered a great deal of vandalism and deterioration.

The original survey here was made in the mid-1960s and later scanned and transcribed. This transcription is known to contain errors in both transcription and scanning, but is nevertheless valuable to the researcher.

Apparently, some of the persons originally buried in the old cemetery have been relocated to newer burial grounds. This cemetery contains many of the original area settlers and is an ideal example of the rich mixture of nationalities that made up early California.

Although there are several large families, the burials indicate a certain transience in the inhabitants of the area.

I had mentioned that I was interested in the paranormal, photographing and experiences, to her so we went for a hunt a couple nights after. It was a clear night in October this year past. Immediately entering, you could feel these presence's and we just started shooting pics in cold places and where we felt activity was happening.

Being my first visit I wanted to check these pics on my digital camera after the first few to see if what we were felling was founded. The first shot was for the hillside with more orbs than I've ever seen in one place. So I thought this is going to be a good night. We went after 11pm so it was a prime time to be there. We continued our walk on the paths and along a road going through this place, and just shot and shot pictures. This cemetery was the resting place of many pioneers and founders of the local cities surrounding. We continue walking around this road through this huge place until we come upon this huge tree right on the top of this hill, so we again shot pictures, and got lots of orbs.

We took the road all the way down the hill to the main gates and I took a picture of this mausoleum and got a silhouette! We concluded our night there about a hour later and felt something following us on the way out down this dirt road, and I got this really bright orb in a picture also. Great ending to a fascinating night.

Martinez is the county seat of Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 35,866 at the 2000 census. The downtown is notable for its large number of preserved old buildings. Martinez is located on the south side of the Carquinez Strait in the San Francisco Bay Area, directly facing the city of Benicia. Martinez is noted for its good schools, including Morello Park and St. Catherine of Siena.

Originally established in 1849 as a way station for the California Gold Rush, it became the county seat in 1850, but could not incorporate at the time because it lacked the 200 registered voters required, and only became a city in 1876. Martinez is also purportedly the birthplace of the Martini.

Don Ignacio Nicanor Martinez was born in Mexico City in 1774. He served in Spain's colonial army in Alta California, where he was stationed at the San Diego presidio. In 1807 he married Martina Ramirez de Arellano at the Santa Barbara presidio. They spent the following years between Santa Barbara and San Diego. They had eleven children. In 1821 Martinez was transferred to the presidio at Yerba Buena (renamed San Francisco in 1848) as second in command to Luis Arguello. He followed Arguello as commander in 1822, serving in this position until his retirement in 1832. He then moved to the pueblo of San Jose. When he returned to Yerba Buena it was as alcalde, chief officer of the civic government. In 1836 he moved his family to Rancho el Pinole, a grant of land in Contra Costa County which had been awarded to him for service to the Mexican government. He died there in 1848 but was buried at the San Jose mission, where many prominent Californio families attended his funeral services. The town of Martinez, part of which included Rancho el Pinole, was named for him.

Martinez was the home of John Muir from 1880 until his death in 1914. He was buried about one mile south of the building that is now the John Muir National Historic Site. Joe DiMaggio was born in 1914 in the town. In 1915 Shell Oil Company built an oil refinery near Martinez, which sparked a building boom in the area. Martinez's oil refineries can still be seen today from Interstate 680, and it continues to be a significant port and petroleum processing center.

Spirit orbs, ghost? They are attracted to one particular tree on top of the hill, and our cameras caught hundreds of orbs in the air all over this place.

Alhambra Cemetery, Cemeteries of Contra Costa County
This site contains records for 4291 people. Take the Alhambra Valley exit off of Hwy 4. And turn towards John Muir's house. Continue down and turn left onto Marina Vista. Turn right onto Talbart St. and then left onto Foster and veer right onto Carquinez Scenic Route. The Cemetery spans on both sides of the road, and is very large.
