5. Headless Horseman... Ulster
Park, New York
THE BLACK SPIDER
SIDESHOW
The legend of The Black Spider Sideshow varies slightly
from town to town. For over a century, the traveling
show of freaks has greatly been known for its mysterious,
yet enticing demeanor, its denial and desire.
The Sideshow caravan travels at night and only
by train. Its unknown autumn destinations are
always around the time of Samhain, the Pagan celebration,
traditionally known as the time to remember those
who have gone before us. Only on the night of
the arrival would the townspeople realize the
abnormal feeling of The Black Spider Sideshow.
This unusual feeling remained in each town until
the night the train pulled out with all the freaks
aboard.
Little has been
written by past generations of a Concierge, who
was the first of the Sideshow to greet the bewildered
citizens in each town. The hypnotic enthusiasm of
the Concierge drew crowds of skeptics, turning them
into desiring customers, some who would remain forever.
Not all is known of the inner workings of The
Sideshow. Much, however, is yet to be unknown.
Old flyers found, as well as old reports written
in newspapers, show no normalcy present during
the operation of The Black Spider Sideshow.
Hypnotists, Weight Guessers, Rides and Games for
the Brave at Heart. The main emphasis always directed
towards the stars, such as The Freaks, Maggot
Babies, Man Eating Chicken, Dog Face Boy and many
more unpleasant spectacles of life.
All tales mention a time of gloom when entire
townships stopped what they were doing. During
visits of The Black Widow and her show, businesses
would close, schools would not open, households
would empty into the streets and seem to be devoured
by and called to The Sideshow by the Barkers,
the Banners and Human Oddities inside.
The Black Spider's
sudden departure is remembered by the few who avoided
its tempting atmosphere. Everyone else is said to
have vanished. As for The Sideshow itself, legends
agree on one thing, at the bottom of each posting
a haunting scripture read: Hope You Join Us Again!
